Huskers Dominant in 4-0 Victory Over Redhawks

huskersoccerLincoln – The Nebraska soccer team controlled play for the much of the contest and outshot Southeast Missouri State by a 30-3 margin en route to a 4-0 regular season-opening victory on Friday evening at the Nebraska Soccer Field.

The Huskers wasted no time getting some offensive production, taking the lead less than three minutes into the contest. Freshman Jaycie Johnson’s shot from the right side was deflected and landed in the path of a hustling Mayme Conroy who put it into the left side of the goal from close range for the early 1-0 advantage.

NU held possession for much of the first half as the strong Husker defense did not allow the Redhawks to record a shot in the period, while Nebraska notched 14 shots with seven coming on goal.

The Huskers continued to dominate early in the second half with a perfectly executed corner kick off the foot of Sam Areman that was headed in by Conroy for her second goal of the game and 17th of her career at the 48:21 mark for the 2-0 lead.

Nebraska quickly extended the lead to 3-0 when Johnson earned her first career goal as a Husker in the 52nd minute, beating the Southeast Missouri keeper to the far post after a give-and-go pass from Caroline Flynn.

Johnson made it a multi-goal debut with just minutes remaining as she was taken down in the penalty area after she eluded the Redhawks defender. Johnson converted on the ensuing penalty kick as she fooled the keeper to the right side, giving NU the 4-0 victory to open the season.

The 30 shots on offense for the Huskers equaled its season-high from last year. NU also recorded 14 shots on goal, a total that was bested twice in 2012.

Freshman Kelly Schatz made a pair of saves in 17 minutes of action after she came on in relief for starting goalkeeper Emma Stevens, who moved into second place alone on the all-time list of Husker keepers for games played in goal with 49.

Stevens did not have to make a save on the evening as the NU defensive pressure kept the Redhawks at bay until the 74:19 mark of the contest when Southeast Missouri recorded its first shot of the night.

The Huskers will be back in action looking to start a winning streak this Sunday when they host the Cincinnati Bearcats for a Noon contest.

Beck’s One Goal: To Win

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb.-  The Nebraska football team continued its 2013 football fall camp Thursday afternoon, going through a two-hour practice in full pads inside the Hawks Center and outside at the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice facility.

Nebraska Offensive Coordinator Tim Beck met with the media after practice, noting that he doesn’t put a lot of goals up for the offense, but he does have one major goal during the 2013 Husker football season, to win.

“There is one goal—to win. We don’t talk a lot about other things, we just have to find a way to win.” Beck said, “Whether we have to win 70-69 or two to nothing, we just have to find ways to win.”

With a high powered offense expected in 2013, Beck really likes how the offensive line is shaping up so far during fall camp.

“We’ve got good two deep, I like the way our guys are competing right now.” Beck said, “I like those guys, I think there are some veterans, good leadership up there and some good young guys.”

Tight end is a position where the Huskers need to replace two departing starters from 2012 in Ben Cotton and Kyler Reed. Freshman Cethan Carter of Metairie, La., has impressed Beck so far.

“Cethan is doing good, I’m really pleased with him.” Beck said.

Much has been said about senior starting quarterback Taylor Martinez and his quest to bring back a conference championship back to Lincoln, the first since 1999, but not much has been said about his backup. Not to worry, Beck noted that the backup role has not yet been determined, and could change throughout the season depending on the situation.

“I think a lot depends on the game situation and the score and where we are at and all that. There is so much that goes into that.” Beck said.

True freshman quarterback Johnny Stanton continues to impress the coaching staff in fall camp. The Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., native has been impressing Beck with how fast he has picked up the playbook since his arrival in Lincoln.

“I think he (Stanton) is a really smart guy that has picked up the offense really fast for a young guy. But, the game is still fast for him too.”

Nebraska will be back on the practice field on Friday as they continue their third week of fall camp practices.

Nebraska Stadium Addition Pushes Capacity Past 90,000

Memorial-Stadium-Huskers-NeLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The ribbon has been cut on the $63.5 million addition to Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium that will increase capacity to more than 90,000 and serve as a hub for research on concussions and other areas of brain science and athletic performance.

Gov. Dave Heineman, retired football coach and athletic director Tom Osborne and Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany were among the dignitaries who participated in a ceremony in front of the East Stadium entrance Thursday.

The addition of 38 skybox suites brings the stadium’s total to more than 100.

Private donations and revenue from the new seating are funding the project, which will be paid off in seven years.

Osborne said the brain and athletic performance research areas will be major selling points in recruiting for all of the university’s teams.

Nebraska Opens Regular Season with Husker Classic

huskersoccerThe Nebraska soccer team opens the 2013 regular season at home on Friday, Aug. 23 against Southeast Missouri State at 6 p.m., before finishing its homestand on Sunday, Aug. 25 with a match against Cincinnati at Noon.

NU put on a dominating performance last season with a 4-0 shutout win over Southeast Missouri in the first meeting between the two programs on Sept. 8 at the Nebraska Soccer Field. The Huskers recorded a season-high 30 shots, while allowing just one shot all day from the Redhawks.

Nebraska and Cincinnati also met last season for the first time on the pitch, where NU pulled out a 2-1 victory in Ohio on Sept. 2. Both squads were evenly matched in last year’s contest as they each posted 19 shots, with the Huskers posting eight shots on net to the Bearcats’ seven.

Experienced Group of Huskers
Nebraska returns an experienced squad in 2013 that includes six seniors. 11 starters are back from last year’s squad, including senior Jordan Jackson who is back for her final season after an injury setback in 2012. Senior goalkeeper Emma Stevens will provide leadership in net for the Huskers as she has started all but one match in net for the Huskers the past two seasons.

Junior Mayme Conroy had a breakout season for the Huskers in 2012 on her way to earning second-team All-Big Ten honors, leading the Huskers with 14 goals. Ari Romero also earned second-team All-Big Ten accolades as she helped the Huskers pitch a pair of shutouts last season and hold six teams to one goal or less.

Ninth Season at Nebraska Soccer Field
Nebraska’s home turf has given the Huskers a definitive advantage. Since moving to campus in 2005, the Huskers are 54-22-12 at home over the past eight seasons, including an impressive combined record of 33-13-5 over the past five seasons.

Stevens Climbing the Husker Ranks
Stevens enters her fourth season as the Husker goalkeeper and is near the top of a number of statistical categories. In Stevens’ next match, she will pass Erin Miller and move into second place all-time in games played for Husker goalkeepers with 49. With her next victory, Emma will move into a tie with Katie Wright for fifth with 19 wins in net.

Stevens also ranks third in both career saves (184) and minutes in goal (4,048), while sitting fourth all-time with 44 starts in net.

Green and Cooper Impressing Pelini at Safety

UNLLincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska football team was back on the practice fields Tuesday evening, as the Huskers continue into the third week of the 2013 fall camp. The Huskers went through a two-hour practice in full pads inside the Hawks Center and outside at the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice facility.

Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini met with the media after practice, noting that the team is making some good progress as they start their preparations for the 2013 opening game versus Wyoming on Aug. 31.

“We are making some good progress, we are getting a lot of things accomplished out there,” Pelini said, “I am seeing a lot of areas where we need to get better, but the energy has been good and the temp has been good. I see us improving as a football team right now.”

A player that has had to deal with changing positions is senior Andrew Green. Green, who previously played corner for the past three seasons for NU changed to safety going into this season. Pelini believes that the switch is starting to work out great, as Green is starting to show some of his cover skills at safety.

“He has come along well, we gave him a ton of reps out there today and he is getting better.” Pelini said, “I think he is comfortable and he has picked it up well. He has shown really good range back there and cover skills from his corner days, he’s getting better.”

With his added depth in the secondary, not only do the Huskers boast a solid cornerback trio with junior Josh Mitchell and seniors Stanley Jean Baptiste and Ciante Evans, the Blackshirt secondary has a proven senior leader in Green to play safety.

A player that much like Green changed positions from safety to cornerback and now back to safety is junior Corey Cooper.  Cooper, who recorded 17 tackles last season with 1.5 tackles for loss has been impressing Pelini and the rest of the coaching staff during fall camp with his play at safety.

“His experience with playing up (cornerback) has helped him going back. Just getting game experience—getting confidence and having success.” Pelini said, “He understands how things work up front, so I think it made him a better safety having been up.”

Much has been said about the Nebraska football team announcing there will be four season long captains, with Taylor Martinez, Quincy Enunwa, Spencer Long and Ciante Evans being the captains chosen. Pelini so far has really liked how the captains have stood up to their leadership rolls, while also mentioning the four captains are not the only ones stepping up in the leadership department.

“I think we are getting really good leadership, not just the captains but some of the older guys as well.” Pelini said, “This team has some intangibles—leadership that I really like. It is a true theme, I like the way they have come together and hopefully that will continue.”

A player that has been making some noise on the offensive line has been senior Aurora native Andrew Rodriguez. Rodriguez, who has started eight games in his Husker career has shown some really good things at camp so far according to Pelini.

“He has played well, this has been his best camp and he is probably playing the best football he has ever played while he has been here.” Pelini said.

Nebraska will be back on the practice field on Wednesday as they continue their third week of fall camp practices. Check back at Huskers.com for all of your preseason football practice coverage including the latest news, photos and video features.

Martinez Poised for Big Finish to Nebraska Career

Taylor-Martinez-Nebraska-Huskers-footballLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — All Taylor Martinez wants in his last season at Nebraska is to have fun and win lots of games.

He already owns school records for career total offense and passing, and he needs fewer than 600 yards to overtake 2001 Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch as the top rushing quarterback.

About the only thing missing is a championship. He says he’s not worried about that. He plans to keep doing what he’s been doing with his breakaway speed and improved passing and see where it takes him and the No. 18 Cornhuskers.

The Huskers open Aug. 31 at home against Wyoming.

Neb DT Williams is Out for Season with Knee Injury

Kevin-Williams-Nebraska-Huskers FootballLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska defensive tackle Kevin Williams will miss the season because of a knee injury.

Coach Bo Pelini didn’t disclose the nature of the injury Saturday but said the sophomore from Holland, Ohio, would be ready to play in 2014. Williams missed the 2011 season because of a knee injury.

Williams played in five games last season and made four tackles. He was competing for a starting tackle job alongside Thad Randle for the 18th-ranked Cornhuskers.

Huskers Complete Second Week of Fall Camp

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska football team completed week two of its 2013 football fall camp Saturday afternoon, going through a two-hour practice in full pads inside the Hawks Center and outside at the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice facility.

Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini met with the media after practice, noting that the team has been through a long week of practice, but likes the team’s direction with two weeks to go before the season opener.

“We just finished up a long week—a good week, got a lot accomplished, still got a ways to go as a football team, but we got a lot accomplished this week.” Pelini said, “I’m liking the direction this football team is heading in right now, but we got a lot of work ahead of us. We are not game ready yet, but I am seeing a lot of progress in a lot of areas.”

A key position the Huskers need to find depth in during the 2013 season is tight end, with the losses of graduating seniors Ben Cotton and Kyler Reed. Senior Jake Long will be one of the guys in the mix this upcoming season, and according to Pelini, even though Long suffered a minor injury at the start of camp, the senior Elkhorn native will be ready for the start of the season.

“Jake Long is way ahead of schedule right now. He will be coming back any day right now.” Pelini said, “He will be ready for game week, and he will probably be ready sometime this week.”

According to Pelini, even though it is only two weeks into the 2013 football season, the offense is already a well-primed machine, with an experienced core group coming back.

“I think we are a deeper group right now which really excites me.” Pelini said, “We have more depth and some of our younger guys are really competing for some playing time. We have a lot of guys that can play, and can play well, and hopefully that will continue.”

On the defensive side, one newcomer who has stood out in the early portion of camp has been freshman linebacker Josh Banderas, and Coach Pelini talked about his development during fall camp.

“Josh Banderas has done well, he still has a long way to go, we are putting a lot on him and throwing a lot at him.” Pelini said, “The thing I am most excited about Josh is, we knew he could run, he is physical and is showing tremendous instincts for the position. But it hasn’t been too big for him, for somebody who plays Mike linebacker and has to make a lot of calls and do a lot of things that we put on him. He has handled it extremely well. He is going to be a tremendous football player.”

Pelini announced that sophomore defensive tackle Kevin Williams will miss the season due to a knee injury. Williams, a third-year sophomore, played in five games in 2012 after returning to the lineup following a knee injury, and had four tackles, including a tackle for loss, and a quarterback hurry.

“This is the second time he has had a knee injury. I just feel for the kid.” Pelini said, “He’ll come back, it was a pretty clean injury. We think he will be able to rehab, and he will be just fine going forward.”

Nebraska will be back on the practice field on Monday for the start of week three practices in fall camp. Check back at Huskers.com for all of your preseason football practice coverage including the latest news, photos and video features.
