Pelini Impressed with Husker Secondary

Bo-Pelini-Nebraska-HuskersLincoln, Neb.-  The Nebraska football team continued its 2013 football fall camp Tuesday night, going through a two-hour practice in full pads inside the Hawks Center and outside at the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice facility.

Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini addressed the media after practice, noting that he has been extremely impressed with the secondary, especially cornerbacks Josh Mitchell and seniors Stanley Jean-Baptiste and Ciante Evans.

“The top two corners right now when we get into nickel are Stanley and Josh Mitchell, and obviously Ciante is playing nickel.” Pelini said, “We have really good depth in the secondary, our safeties are playing at a high level.”

Pelini had this to add talking about the secondary, “Stanley up to this point, this is the best week he has ever had in our program. Josh is playing at a high level with a lot of confidence and we all know what Ciante can do. It is going to be a fun group to watch.”

A freshman newcomer that you should get accustomed to playing on the Blackshirts is Nathan Gerry. Gerry a Sioux Falls, S.D., native has really impressed Coach Pelini up to this point in fall camp.

“Nate can play a lot of different spots for us, he has played some safety, and he has played some will, some buck (linebacker), some dime. He is going to be a good football player.”

Senior Brodrick Nickens has also impressed Pelini so far in camp, after making the transition from offensive lineman to defensive tackle in his last season as a Husker.

“Brodrick does a good job on what we are asking him to do. He has to work on getting a little lower at times but he is a big load in there that can hold the point. He works hard, he’s a leader and he is doing a good job for us.”

Another defensive tackle that has shown some promise is sophomore Aaron Curry. It will be vital for the Husker defense to find good production out of the defensive line during the 2013 season, and according to Pelini, once Curry finds some consistency he could be a key player.

“Curry is doing a good job, like I said he is one of those guys who has shown flashes. He needs to continue to work on his consistency but that can be said about a lot of the guys up front.”

Nebraska will be back on the practice field on Wednesday for its 11th and 12th practices of fall camp.

Nebraska Aide Beck Goes Easy on Yelling After Surgery

Tim Beck Nebraska HuskersLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska offensive coordinator Tim Beck is going easy on the yelling in practice. That’s because he’s in the second month of his recovery from surgery to alleviate sleep apnea. His jaw was broken in four places and reset to improve his breathing.

The operation and the soft diet he’s been on in the seven weeks since have caused him to lose 15 pounds. Getting through long days of meetings and practices has been a challenge.

Beck said he can raise his voice a little. He jokes that when he really needs to let players know he’s not happy, he throws his practice script on the ground to get the point across.

Huskers Wrapping Up First Week of Camp

Saturday marked the first of six days during Nebraska football preseason practice with two on-field sessions. The Huskers went through a 1 ½-hour light workout early Saturday afternoon in Lincoln, and will be back on the practice fields later in the day for a full-scale practice.

Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini met with the media following the first session of the day and talked about the progress the team has made through the first week of camp, indicating he’s seen a “lot of good things” from both the offense and defense.

“We’ve had a good week and gotten a lot done,” the sixth-year Husker head coach said. “I like where we are, but we’ve still got a lot of teaching to be done. We know where we are right now and I like the progress we’ve made to this point.”

Pelini was asked about the progress of two talented freshmen I-backs Adam Taylor and Terrell Newby. Pelini said it is too early to give a full evaluation on the duo, but he has been impressed with their development to this point. Pelini said any freshmen I-back has to show the ability to be a complete back, including learning pass protection duties.

“Probably the biggest difference for guys being able to execute at running back is  being able to handle the protection aspect of it,” Pelini said. “A lot of guys haven’t been asked to do near what you have to have your backs do at this level. That’s a big part of it.”

Nebraska is “doing pretty good” on the injury front, according to Pelini. Redshirt freshman quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. was slowed for the first few days of camp, but Pelini said Armstrong has been feeling better each day as the week has progressed.

Following the Saturday afternoon workout, Nebraska will have Sunday off before entering a full week of practices on Monday. The Huskers are scheduled to conduct nine practices in six days, including two-a-day sessions on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

NU Football: Beck Likes Offense’s Attentiveness

husker footballLincoln, Neb.- Nebraska hit the practice field for the fourth time in the 2013 football fall camp Thursday night, going through a two-hour workout in shoulder pads, shorts and helmets inside the Hawks Center and on the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice facility.

Nebraska Offensive Coordinator Tim Beck addressed the media after practice, noting that he is still recovering from sleep apnea surgery, but thanks all of Husker nation for the support given in his recovery.

“I appreciate everybody’s support and prayers for me,” Beck said, “At the end of the day I am sore and worn out a little bit, but you get out there and get going and once you get out there you don’t feel it as much.”

Beck seemed excited when asked about the high octane Husker offense, noting the group has performed well early in camp.

“I like what I see, I think our guys’ attention has been good, I think the first group has been pretty solid.” Beck said, “The second group—there is some younger guys on there that still have to develop, but they are very talented and I like their talent.”

Recently some of the NU’s offensive players have mentioned some very lofty goals to the media members, which seems to impress Beck, but as he noted, confidence comes from being prepared.

“Our guys are going to have to work to earn everything they get like they did last year, they worked hard, believed in the system and in themselves and we were fortunate to have some success.” Beck said, “We’ve got to do the same this year, and they are doing that, and I wouldn’t say they are out here just hanging out.”

With the departure of senior running back Rex Burkhead, Nebraska reloaded with two very talented backs in Adam Taylor and Terrell Newby. Both backs have impressed Beck so far in camp.

“I like both of those guys, both of them have a chance to help us.” Beck said, “Two different style of runners, but they both are good at what they do, and they aren’t bad at the other things.”

Beck also noted that quarterbacks Tommy Armstrong Jr. and Johnny Stanton have been, “moving around pretty well.”

Nebraska will be back on the practice field on Friday evening for their fifth workout of camp.

The speaker series in Little Rock begins Aug. 21 with an address from Bielema. Osborne will speak to the club Sept. 9, followed by Long’s address on Sept. 16.

Pelini Impressed with Huskers Enthusiasm

Bo-Pelini-Nebraska-HuskersLincoln, Neb.- Nebraska hit the practice field for the second time in the 2013 football fall camp Tuesday night, going through a two-hour workout in shorts and helmets inside the Hawks Center and on the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice facility.

Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini addressed the media after practice, noting that he thinks the team has had two great first days of practice.

“I thought we have had two good days obviously no pads with the way the NCAA lays it out but the energy has been good and we have gotten a lot of things accomplished over the first couple of days.” Pelini said, “I like where we are right now, I like the enthusiasm, the execution has been pretty good and we have been getting a lot of guys’ reps.”

A newcomer fans might want to get accustomed to being on the field is juco-transfer defensive end Randy Gregory. Gregory a product of Arizona Western Community college in Yuma, Ariz., was a top recruit for the Huskers 2013 recruiting class, and so far has impressed Pelini at practice.

“Randy has looked good the first two days, obviously we are practicing in shorts but he is obviously is swimming a little mentally out there, but he can play.” Pelini said, “I think he (Gregory) showed up in-shape and he hasn’t struggled at all as far as his conditioning is concerned.”

Pelini also mentioned that freshman quarterback Johnny Stanton’s knee is fine, and has done some good things but, “obviously has a long-long way to go.”

Nebraska lost seven starters from last year’s defense and is breaking in a number of new faces, but don’t count Pelini among those that are concerned about the Blackshirts.

“They are going to play good football when we kick off, I have every confidence—I like what I have seen with the defense so far.” Pelini said, “You guys are the ones concerned about the defense, not me. We’ll be fine.”

*Pelini noted freshman defensive tackle Maliek Collins did not practice Tuesday, due to an undisclosed personal issue.

Nebraska will be back on the practice field on Wednesday evening for their third workout of camp. Check back at Huskers.com for all of your preseason football practice coverage including the latest news, photos and video features.
