Huskers Return Home for Delaware State

The Nebraska basketball team looks to have a short memory, as the Huskers return to action Thursday night to take on Delaware State. Tipoff at Pinnacle Bank Arena is set for 7 p.m. and a limited number of tickets are available by visiting Huskers.com, calling 800-8-BIGRED during business hours or at the Pinnacle Bank Arena box office beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The Huskers are 1-1 on the season and look to bounce back from an 87-63 loss at the hands of No. 11 Villanova Tuesday night at the Gavitt Tipoff Games. In that game, Nebraska led 23-16 midway thru the first half before going into an extended scoring drought for more than seven minutes, allowing the Wildcats to take control. At times, the Huskers were their own worst enemy, as 22 turnovers led directly to 33 Villanova points, and the Huskers shot just 38 percent from the field. Huskers Fall to No. 11 Villanova

Philadelphia, Pa. – Villanova with a 22-0 first-half run to erase a seven-point deficit, as Nebraska suffered its first loss of the season, falling to the No. 11 Wildcats, 87-63, at the Pavilion Tuesday night in the inaugural Gavitt Tipoff Games.

Huskers Begin BYE Week Preparations

Lincoln, Neb. – The Huskers returned to practice Tuesday after the Rutgers win and practiced for just under two hours. The offense practiced in the Cook Pavilion while the defense practiced in the Hawks Championship Center.

Head Coach Mike Riley spoke to the media following practice. He spoke about the team’s need for a bye week.

Huskers Dominate Ospreys

Lincoln – Jessica Shepard scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to become the first Husker freshman in history to score 20 points and produce double-doubles in each of the first two games of a career, powering the Nebraska women’s basketball team to a 91-46 win over North Florida Monday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Shepard, who earned the first Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Week award of the season earlier Monday after scoring 24 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in her debut on Saturday, hit 13-of-16 shots from the field while adding an assist, two steals and the first block of her career against North Florida. Huskers Travel to Villanova Tuesday Night

The Nebraska basketball team hits the road for the first time this season, traveling to Philadelphia to take on the Villanova Wildcats in the inaugural Gavitt Tipoff Games Tuesday night. Tipoff between the Huskers and No. 11 Wildcats is set for 7:45 p.m. central at The Pavilion and will be televised by FS1 and carried on the Husker Sports Radio Network.

The Gavitt Tipoff Games, named after Big East founder and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Dave Gavitt, is a four-day event pitting Big Ten and Big East teams against each other early in the basketball season. Continue reading “Huskers Travel to Villanova Tuesday Night”

Shepard Captures Big Ten Freshman Honor

Nebraska’s Jessica Shepard captured the first Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Week honor of the season, while sophomore Natalie Romeo earned a spot on the weekly honor roll for her outstanding season-opening performance, the conference office announced on Monday.

Shepard, a 6-4 forward from Fremont, Neb., notched the first double-double by a freshman in a career debut in school history with 24 points and 13 rebounds in Saturday’s 96-46 win over Arkansas Pine Bluff at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Continue reading “Shepard Captures Big Ten Freshman Honor”

Huskers Roll to 31-14 Win at Rutgers

Piscataway, N.J. – Nebraska jumped to a 21-0 lead in the first half and never looked back in a 31-14 victory over Rutgers at High Point Solutions Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

With their second straight win, the Huskers improved to 5-6 overall and 3-4 in the Big Ten, while Rutgers slipped to 3-7 and 1-6 in the conference.

Huskers Cruise in Season Opener

Lincoln – Andrew White III and Jack McVeigh combined for 34 points, as Nebraska opened the 2015-16 season with a 97-51 win over Mississippi Valley State at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Lincoln – Natalie Romeo and Jessica Shepard both produced record performances for a season opener, as the Nebraska women’s basketball team rolled to a 96-46 win over Arkansas Pine Bluff on Saturday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Romeo, a 5-7 sophomore from Martinez, Calif., produced a Nebraska season-opening record 30 points, while adding four assists in just 26 minutes to lead the Big Red. Troy, N.Y. – The No. 10 Nebraska wrestling team (3-0) opened its dual season in dominating fashion with wins over Lock Haven, No. 20 Oregon State and No. 7 Lehigh in the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals at Hudson Valley Community College on Sunday.
