Williams Hired as Nebraska Assistant Coach

Keith Williams at Tulane
Keith Williams at Tulane

Keith Williams has been hired as an assistant coach at the University of Nebraska, completing Coach Mike Riley’s first full-time coaching staff with the Cornhuskers.

Williams will coach the Nebraska wide receivers and joins the Husker program from Tulane University, where he has spent the previous three seasons.

“Keith Williams is a tremendous addition to our Nebraska staff, and brings a great background in coaching wide receivers,” Riley said. “With Keith’s addition, I’m excited about the completion of our full-time staff. It is a mix of quality individuals who bring great skills as teachers, coaches, mentors and recruiters.”

Williams, who had eight former receivers in the National Football League in 2014, is eager to join Riley’s staff at Nebraska.

“I am really excited to join Coach Riley’s staff and thankful for the opportunity he has given me at Nebraska,” Williams said. “I have had a great respect for Coach Riley’s career from afar, and I’m ecstatic to be here at Nebraska and be a part of this program. This is one of those places that if you pay any attention to college football, you know about Nebraska. I have seen that ‘N’ my whole life.”

In his role on the Tulane staff, Williams coached the Green Wave wide receivers the past three seasons, and was also the out-of-state recruiting coordinator in 2014. This past season, the top target in the Green Wave passing game was true freshman Teddy Veal, who led Tulane with 40 receptions in his first season under Williams’ direction.

Williams was instrumental in the success of Tulane wideout Ryan Grant who completed his career in 2013. Grant finished his career with 196 receptions for 2,769 yards. Grant topped 75 receptions in each of his final two seasons, and produced a pair of 1,000-yard receiving campaigns. Grant spent the 2014 season with the Washington Redskins.

In 2013, Williams’ receivers combined for nearly 1,900 receiving yards and 18 receiving touchdowns, helping the Green Wave to a 7-6 record and trip to the New Orleans Bowl.

Before his time at Tulane, Williams served as the receivers coach at Fresno State for three seasons. While with the Bulldogs, Williams coached three All-Western Athletic Conference receivers and helped Fresno State to two bowl appearances.

Williams also has NFL experience, spending the 2008 season with the San Diego Chargers in a minority internship coaching position. He was also an assistant coach at San Jose City College, San Jose State and Solano (Calif.) College.

Lincoln – As part of the NABC Suits and Sneakers Awareness Week, the Nebraska men’s basketball program is teaming with the American Cancer Society to promote #AveryStrong Day…Bone Marrow Donor Drive to Fight Cancer! For the Huskers’ game with Michigan State on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The Husker basketball program has been affected by leukemia, as Avery Harriman, the son of assistant coach Chris Harriman was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia when he was 2 years old. Avery has undergone a pair of bone marrow transplants with the most recent one coming last September, with the donor found through the bone marrow registry.  Avery and other children battling pediatric cancer will be honored during pregame ceremonies on Saturday.

To honor the fight that Avery has gone through, the first 1,500 students at Saturday’s game will receive a special #AveryStrong shirt provided by the Husker Sports Radio Network, turning the Red Zone yellow on this special day.  Yellow is the color of pediatric cancer and orange is the color for leukemia symbolizing Avery’s battle.

Students and other fans in attendance can also help the cause of Avery and other kids battling pediatric cancer by learning more about the National Marrow Donor Program. Fans can sign up for the bone marrow registry, as volunteers will be on hand to distribute information throughout Pinnacle Bank Arena. In addition, fans, who are age 18-44, can also receive match kits/swabs and take the test to be a potential bone marrow match at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Saturday.  Fans outside the age group can become donors, but must visit bethematch.org for more information.

The annual Suits and Sneakers Weekend is coordinated by the Coaches vs. Cancer program, a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Since its inception in 1993, the American Cancer Society Coaches vs. Cancer initiative has raised more than $87 million to support the Society’s mission. For more information on Suits and Sneakers Awareness Week, please visit www.coachesvscancer.org.

Volunteers from the American Cancer Society and UNL students will be on hand passing out information on UNL’s Relay for Life event later this spring to raise awareness for the continued fight against cancer.

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Shavon Shields scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half and Nebraska survived an eight-minute field-goal drought to end the game to beat Minnesota 52-49 on Tuesday night.

Minnesota (12-8, 1-6) has lost six of its last seven games. Five of the Gophers’ six conference losses have been by five points or less.

Terran Petteway added 11 points for the Huskers in a slog of a game that had 33 field goals and 31 turnovers.

Andre Hollins had 21 points for the Gophers, who shot a season-low 30.8 percent from the field and made only 9 of 19 free throws. Joey King added 11 points.

Live radio coverage will be provided by the Husker Sports Network, with Matt Coatney and Jeff Griesch on the call on stations across the network, including B107.3 FM in Lincoln, 93.3 FM in Omaha and 880 AM in Lexington. Free live audio also will be available on Huskers.com.

Nebraska is coming off its fourth straight win with a 69-59 victory over Purdue on Monday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena. All-American Rachel Theriot led four Huskers in double figures with 16 points and seven assists, closing out the win with nine points in the final three minutes.

Senior Hailie Sample added a strong performance with 15 points, while fellow senior Brandi Jeffery produced one of the best all-around games of her career with 13 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Tear’a Laudermill, who scored 21 points and hit five threes in last year’s 71-70 overtime win at Wisconsin, pitched in 10 first-half points for the Big Red against the Boilermakers.

Nebraska’s win over Purdue snapped a five-game losing streak in the series with the Boilers. On the flip side, the Huskers own a five-game winning streak against Wisconsin. The series has been defined by close games, including NU’s one-point OT win last year and a 55-53 win on Feb. 28, 2013. Four of NU’s five wins have been by single digits with all three wins in Madison decided by six points or less.

Thursday night’s game will mark the third straight meeting in the series in Madison, and the seventh time in 11 games that the teams have met on Wisconsin’s home court.

The Badgers bring a 7-10 record and a 3-4 Big Ten mark into the contest. Wisconsin is coming off a 73-63 loss to No. 24 Rutgers at the Kohl Center on Sunday, but notched a 65-56 win over Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind., on Jan. 15. Wisconsin is 5-3 at the Kohl Center this season, including decisive Big Ten wins over Michigan (63-53) and Penn State (65-46).

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Rachel Theriot made all seven of her free throw attempts and finished with 16 points to help No. 16 Nebraska beat Purdue 69-59 on Monday.

Whitney Bays recorded her ninth straight double-double for Purdue (9-9, 3-4) with 14 points and 14 rebounds. April Wilson added a career-high 20 points as the Boilermakers lost their fourth game in a row for the first time since 2010.

Bays hit two free throws to cut Purdue’s deficit to 53-49, but Theriot started an 8-0 spurt with a 3-pointer and capped it with a three-point play with 3:04 left.

Huskers Return Home to Take on Gophers

A limited number of 300 Level tickets are available for $10 by visiting Huskers.com, calling 800-8-BIGRED or at the Pinnacle Bank Arena box office Tuesday evening beginning at 6 p.m.

Tipoff between the Huskers and Golden Gophers at Pinnacle Bank Arena is set for 7:36 p.m. (central) and the game will be nationally televised on BTN with Dave Revsine and Jim Jackson on the call. The game is also available online and on mobile devices on BTN and BTN2Go.
The game will be broadcast across the state of Nebraska on the IMG Husker Sports Radio Network, including KLIN 1400 AM in Lincoln, 1110 KFAB in Omaha and KRVN 880 AM in Lexington with Kent Pavelka calling the action and Matt Davison adding color commentary. The game can be heard for free on Huskers.com and available on the Huskers’ app on iOS or android devices, as well as on TuneIn Radio and on SiriusXM Satellite Radio.

The Huskers (10-7, 2-3 Big Ten) ran into hot-shooting Wisconsin team in their last outing, as the seventh-ranked Badgers shot 52 percent (11-of-21) from 3-point range in a 70-55 win on Thursday night. That performance had been an anomaly against the Huskers this year, as Nebraska had held its first 16 opponents to just 27.6 percent from 3-point range.
The loss, which snapped NU’s two-game win streak, offset a strong performance from junior guard Terran Petteway, who scored a season-high 27 points, including 4-of-9 from 3-point range.

Petteway, who is second in the Big Ten in scoring at 19.4 points per game, needs only three points on Tuesday to reach 1,000 career points. He has scored 909 of his points over the last year and a half for the Huskers, as Tuesday’s matchup with the Gophers will be his 50th career appearance at Nebraska.

Minnesota heads to Lincoln with a 12-7 record and a 1-5 Big Ten mark after topping Rutgers, 89-80, on Saturday to break a five-game losing streak. In that game, Andre Hollins scored 31 points, including 7-of-10 from 3-point range, to place three Gophers in double figures. Minnesota averages 78.9 points per game and have four players averaging double figures, led by Hollins’ 13.4 points per game.

Tuesday’s matchup will be the first of two meetings with the Gophers in a 12-day stretch, as the Huskers travel to Minneapolis on Jan. 31.
