Huskers Shoot for First Big Ten Win at Michigan State

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe No. 19 Nebraska women’s basketball team opens a two-game Big Ten road trip when the Huskers travel to East Lansing to take on Michigan State Thursday night.

Tip-off between the defending Big Ten Tournament champion Huskers (10-3, 0-2 Big Ten) and the defending Big Ten co-champion Spartans (8-6, 0-3 Big Ten) is set for 7:30 p.m. (central) with live national television coverage by the Big Ten Network with Lisa Byington and Stephanie White on the call.

Live radio coverage will be provided by the Husker Sports Network, with Matt Coatney and Jeff Griesch on the call on stations across the network, including B107.3 FM in Lincoln and 93.3 FM in Omaha. Free live audio also will be available on Huskers.com.

Both the Huskers and Spartans are hungry for a Big Ten win after battling injuries and illness in the early portion of Big Ten Conference play. Nebraska opened with a 72-69 road loss at

Minnesota on Dec. 29, before falling to No. 14 Maryland, 75-47 on Saturday to end a 12-game home winning streak.

Nebraska’s road loss at current No. 23 Minnesota (14-1, 3-0 Big Ten) came with only six scholarship players in uniform. Against Maryland, the Huskers matched the Terps in the first half before going ice cold in the second half, hitting just over 20 percent of their shots from the floor.

The Huskers did welcome the return of freshman guard Natalie Romeo to the court, after she missed NU’s previous eight games with a foot injury. Junior center Anya Kalenta also was cleared to play against Maryland. She has missed the last seven games with a foot injury. Both Romeo and Kalenta also battled the flu at Minnesota, along with reserve Esther Ramacieri, who also returned to the court against Maryland.

Michigan State slipped to 0-3 in Big Ten play with a 74-65 loss at in-state rival Michigan on Sunday, following a 70-51 road loss at Indiana on New Year’s Eve. The Spartans dropped their Big Ten home opener with a 61-57 setback to Northwestern on Dec. 28.

The Spartans have competed with just eight healthy players for the last two weeks, having been stung by major knee injuries to Branndais Agee and Madison Williams in the offseason. Recently, senior center Jasmine Hines has struggled to overcome concussion symptoms.

Top-ranked 174-pounder Robert Kokesh garnered Big Ten Wrestler-of-the-Week accolades from the conference on Tuesday.

Kokesh pinned his first three opponents before notching a major decision over 18th-ranked Kyle Crutchmer of Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals. He topped Missouri’s John Eblen in the semifinals, 5-2, before defeating No. 4 Matt Brown of Penn State in the finals, 3-2.

Kokesh, a two-time All-American, improves to 21-0 on the season, which includes six pins, two technical falls and four major decisions. He has six wins against ranked opponents and has held the No. 1 ranking at 174 pounds in every major NCAA wrestling poll since Dec. 9.

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballIOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Aaaron White had 23 points, Gabe Olaseni scored a career-high 18 and Iowa beat Nebraska 70-59 on Monday for its first 2-0 start in the Big Ten in 12 years.

Jarrod Uthoff had 15 for the Hawkeyes (11-4, 2-0 Big Ten), who prevailed thanks largely to a 31-13 edge on made free throws.

Nebraska’s Shavon Shields led all scorers with 25 points. But the Cornhuskers (8-6, 0-2) had just two points in the final 2:43, and Iowa held Cornhuskers star Terran Petteway to just 11 points.

Iowa holds the rare distinction of two road wins over ranked opponents after winning at Ohio State last week.

The Huskers made the Hawkeyes work to earn their best league start since 2002-03.

Shields helped Nebraska take a one-point lead midway through the second half. Iowa rallied with an 11-3 run to move back in front 61-54 with 4:39 left.

Tipoff for Monday’s matchup between the Huskers and Hawkeyes at Carver-Hawkeye Arena is set for 8:06 p.m. and the game will be nationally televised on BTN with Dave Revsine and Jim Jackson on the call. The game is also available online and on mobile apps on BTN2Go.

The game can be heard for free on Huskers.com and available on the Huskers’ app on iOS or android devices, as well as on TuneIn Radio and on SiriusXM Satellite Radio.

The Huskers (8-5, 0-1 Big Ten) looks to regroup following a 70-65 home loss to Indiana in their Big Ten opener on Wednesday. The Huskers battled back from a 16-point first-half deficit to take a four-point lead midway through the second half against Indiana, but a costly offensive stretch in the second half proved costly. The Huskers had only one field goal over an eight-minute stretch to allow the Hoosiers to regain the lead for good. Nebraska cut the deficit to three points in the final 30 minutes, but were unable to get the rebound to get a chance to tie the contest.

The Huskers feature two of the top wings in the Big Ten in juniors Terran Petteway and Shavon Shields. Against Indiana, the duo combined for 43 points and 15 rebounds in a losing effort, as Petteway scored a game-high 23 points, while Shields added 20. On the season, Petteway is second in the Big Ten at 19.5 points per game, while Shields is third at 17.4 ppg.

The Huskers enter the Big Ten road opener looking to even their road record at 2-2 this season, and have won four of their last seven road games since snapping a 12-game road losing streak on Feb. 8, 2014.

Iowa is 10-4 on the season and comes off one of its most impressive efforts of the season, a 71-65 win at Ohio State last Tuesday in its Big Ten opener. In that game, the Hawkeyes got 18 points each from Jarrod Uthoff and Aaron White and held Ohio State to 42 percent shooting. Iowa is 8-1 at home this season with the only loss coming to Iowa State.

Monday’s game begins a stretch of three Big Ten games in a seven-day stretch for the Huskers, as NU hosts Rutgers (Thursday) and Illinois (Sunday).
