The Huskers are 8-4 on the season after wrapping up a 2-1 showing in Hawaii last week with a 71-58 win over Ohio on Christmas Day. Against Ohio, the Huskers got 22 points apiece from Terran Petteway and Shavon Shields, while holding the Bobcats to 38 percent shooting. Nebraska never trailed and enjoyed a 39-28 advantage on the boards, including a career-high 13 rebounds by David Rivers, which matched the Huskers’ best individual rebounding effort in five years.

Nebraska has defended at a high level since the loss to Incarnate Word on Dec. 10, holding its last four opponents to a combined 34 percent shooting and 55.2 points per game. The improvement has coincided with a string of strong performances from junior forward Walter Pitchford, who is averaging 9.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per game in that stretch.

The Huskers will need to continue that strong defensive against an Indiana team which leads the Big Ten and ranks fourth nationally in scoring offense at 83.4 points per game. The Hoosiers are second in the Big Ten in field goal percentage (.499) and fourth in 3-point percentage (.417).

Wednesday’s game features two of the top scoring duos in the Big Ten as Shields and Petteway combine for 36.5 points per game for the Huskers, while the Hoosiers’ duo of James Blackmon Jr. and Yogi Ferrell account for 35.1 points per game.

Minnesota Knocks Off No. 12 Nebraska 72-69

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballMINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Amanda Zahui B. scored 20 points — including a pair of free throws with 6 seconds left — and blocked a last-second shot to secure Minnesota’s 72-69 win over No. 12 Nebraska on Monday in both team’s Big Ten opener.

Zahui B. was 7 of 11 from the floor and added 15 rebounds. Shayne Mullaney had 18 points for Minnesota (12-1).

Nebraska (10-2) led 67-61 with 2:46 left after Tear’a Laudermilk’s 3-pointer. But Minnesota clawed back with a 9-0 run, including a jumper and pair of free throws from Shae Kelley, to take a three-point lead with 17 seconds left.

Allie Havers’ short jumper made it 70-69 with 8 second remaining. After trading timeouts, Laudermilk put Zahui B. at the line. She made both, then on the other end blocked Emily Cady’s last-second bid to preserve the upset.

Cady paced Nebraska with 21 points and had 14 rebounds.

Husker Fans Pay Bill for Fired Pelini’s Meeting with Players

Bo-Pelini-Nebraska-HuskersLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A group of 51 Nebraska fans has paid the bill for Bo Pelini’s unauthorized use of a high school auditorium to meet with his players after his firing.

Lincoln Public Schools associate superintendent Liz Standish said Monday her office received a $262.50 money order from Brooklyn, New York, last week.

Cornhuskers fan Sarah Krusemark organized the online campaign that raised $810 through donations of $5 to $50. Krusemark plans to send the extra money to the Team Jack Foundation for pediatric brain cancer research.

An unidentified North Star High School staff member initially received the bill after failing to follow protocol in allowing Pelini to use the auditorium.

An audiotape from the meeting revealed Pelini’s expletive-filled criticism of athletic director Shawn Eichorst. Pelini is now the coach at Youngstown State.

nebraska_helmetSAN DIEGO (AP) — Adoree’ Jackson scored on a 98-yard kickoff return and a 71-yard pass from Cody Kessler, and No. 24 Southern California blew most of an 18-point, third-quarter lead before beating No. 25 Nebraska 45-42 in the Holiday Bowl on Saturday night.

Kessler threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns for USC (9-4), which was playing Nebraska (9-4) in a bowl game for the first time.

USC stuffed De’Mornay Pierson on fourth-and-3 from the USC 31 with 2 1/2 minutes left. Nebraska had one final shot but Tommy Armstrong Jr.’s desperation pass as time ran out was knocked down inside the 10.

Armstrong had brought Nebraska back from a 45-27 deficit with a 65-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Westerkamp and a 15-yard keeper and a 2-point conversion pass to Kenny Bell.

Nebraska held a 32-30 lead at halftime despite going scoreless for more than six minutes in the first half.

Huskers Hold Walkthrough at DeVore Stadium, Head to SeaWorld

nebraska_helmetChula Vista, Calif. – The Nebraska football team held a walkthrough on Christmas morning at Southwestern College, practicing for roughly one hour on the field turf at DeVore Stadium. It was the team’s third practice during its time in San Diego before holding its final practice tomorrow afternoon in preparation of Saturday night’s Holiday Bowl against the USC Trojans.

The Huskers spent Wednesday afternoon at the San Diego Zoo and will spend the rest of Christmas Day at SeaWorld. The Huskers will wrap up practice tomorrow afternoon following a trip to the USS Essex for the Navy & Marine Corps Luncheon.

Interim Head Coach Barry Cotton met with the media following practice and discussed how the team’s time in San Diego has been going.

“We decided to hold a walkthrough today” Cotton said. “Tomorrow we’ll have a very crisp, high intensity last practice.”

Nebraska’s defensive line will try to take advantage of a young USC offensive line.

“They are a young, but physical bunch,” Cotton said. “They have some guys that we tried to recruit from California, but they decided to stay at home. We do know a bit about them from their high school careers.”

Even though the Huskers have played 12 games in 2014, Cotton discussed that the Huskers need to be ready for new things.

“We’ve had a good prep so far,” Cotton said. “Our last eight practices have been against nothing but USC defenses. We should be well prepared, but you always have to be ready for something new. We have 12 games under our belt, we’ve seen about every defense you can play against. If they throw something new at us hopefully we can make the adjustments on the field.”

Saturday’s bowl game is set for 7 p.m. (CT) at Qualcomm Stadium, home of the NFL’s San Diego Chargers, and will be carried nationally on ESPN.

Huskers Battle Bobcats on Christmas Day

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThursday’s matchup at the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic is a Christmas treat for college basketball fans, as two of colorful coaches in the country will have their teams square off in Honolulu.

Nebraska takes on Ohio in the fifth-place contest with tipoff between the Huskers and Bobcats slated for 3 p.m. (central) or 20 minutes following the conclusion of the DePaul/Loyola Marymount contest.

Thursday’s contest will be nationally televised on ESPNU with Kanoa Leahey and Cory Alexander on the call. The contest, along with all of the Diamond Head Classic games, is also available online at WatchESPN.com and the WatchESPN app.

The game will be broadcast across the state of Nebraska on the IMG Husker Sports Radio Network, including KLIN 1400 AM in Lincoln, 1110 KFAB in Omaha and KRVN 880 AM in Lexington with Kent Pavelka calling the action and Matt Davison adding color commentary. The game can be heard for free on Huskers.com and available on the Huskers’ app on iOS or android devices, as well as on TuneIn Radio.

The Huskers are 7-4 on the season after losing to Hawaii (66-58) in the tournament opener before rebounding with a 50-42 overtime win over Loyola Marymount Tuesdayevening. Nebraska relied on its best defensive effort in nearly four years, holding LMU to 28 percent shooting. Terran Petteway provided the offensive heroics in overtime, scoring seven of his 17 points in the extra session to lead three Huskers in double figures.

While Petteway and junior wing Shavon Shields combine for nearly 37 points per game, the Huskers’ first two games in Hawaii have also seen the continued emergence of Walter Pitchford as a third offensive option. The 6-foot-10 junior has played some of his best basketball over the last four games, averaging 9.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

Ohio (4-5) comes into the game off its best offensive effort of the year, routing DePaul 99-78 behind 31 points from Javarez Willis after falling to George Washington inMonday’s opener. Willis, who was a teammate of Petteway’s at Texas Tech in 2011-12, averages a team-high 16.4 points per game and is one of four Ohio players averaging in double figures.

The action on the sideline may be as entertaining as the game itself, as NU Coach Tim Miles coaches against one of his protégé. Ohio Head Coach Saul Phillps worked for Miles for three seasons at North Dakota State before succeeded him when Miles left for Colorado State in 2007. Phillips, one of four former Miles assistants coaching in the Division I ranks, won the first matchup between the two, an 83-69 NDSU win over Colorado State in Fargo on Dec. 15, 2007.

Lady Huskers Open Big Ten Play at Minnesota Monday

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe No. 12 Nebraska women’s basketball team opens Big Ten Conference play on the road when the Huskers take on Minnesota Monday night.

Tip-off between the Huskers (10-1) and the Golden Gophers (11-1) is set for 8 p.m. (central) at Williams Arena with live national television coverage by the Big Ten Network.

Live radio coverage will be provided by the Husker Sports Network, with Matt Coatney and Jeff Griesch on the call on stations across the network, including B107.3 FM in Lincoln and 93.3 FM in Omaha. Free live audio also will be available on Huskers.com.

The Huskers finished off one of the best non-conference seasons in school history with an 83-57 win over defending Big South regular-season champion High Point at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Dec. 20. The victory pushed Nebraska’s record to 10-1, matching the second-best 11-game start in school history.

National Player-of-the-Year candidate Rachel Theriot erupted for a season-high 31 points for her second career 30-point effort. Her first came with a career-high 33 points in an 88-85 overtime over Minnesota on Jan. 16, 2014. In addition to her huge 33-point performance in the regular season against the Golden Gophers a year ago, Theriot had 14 points and a career-high 18 assists in Nebraska’s Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal win over Minnesota in Indianapolis on March 7.

The Huskers ended non-conference play as one of four Big Ten teams with 10 or more wins and owned the conference’s best NCAA RPI at No. 7 (Dec. 23). The Big Ten is the No. 1 RPI conference in the nation. Minnesota posted an even better non-conference mark than the Huskers, rolling to an 11-1 record with its lone loss coming in a 71-54 setback at Vanderbilt. The Golden Gophers ended non-conference play as the Big Ten’s only 11-win team and were ranked No. 37 in the official NCAA RPI.

Athough the Gophers lost just once, they did suffer a huge setback with a season-ending knee injury to preseason Big Ten Player of the Year Rachel Banham at North Dakota on Dec. 10. A preseason national player-of-the-year candidate, Banham was averaging 20.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists before her injury at North Dakota. She scored 33 points in the overtime loss last season in Lincoln.
