Huskers Face Florida State in ACC/Big Ten Challenge

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe Nebraska men’s basketball team begins the month of December in Tallahassee, Fla., as the Huskers take on Florida State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge Monday night.
Tipoff from the Donald L. Tucker Center is slated for 6:02 p.m. (central) and will be nationally televised on ESPN2 and on the WatchESPN app with Adam Amin and Len Elmore on the call.

The game will be broadcast across the state of Nebraska on the IMG Husker Sports Radio Network, including KLIN 1400 AM in Lincoln, 1110 KFAB in Omaha and KRVN 880 AM in Lexington with Kent Pavelka calling the action and Matt Davison adding color commentary. The game can be heard for free on Huskers.com and available on the Huskers’ app on iOS or android devices, as well as on TuneIn Radio and SiriusXM Satellite Radio.

While the two football programs have combined for eight national titles and have met in bowl games on four occasions, Monday’s meeting is just the second between the two programs on the hardwood and the first one on either campus. Florida State won the only previous meeting, a 74-60 win at the 2005 Orange Bowl Classic.

The NU-FSU contest also opens the 15th annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge Presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. The three-day event features 14 matchups between Big Ten and ACC programs for the Commissioner’s Cup. The Big Ten has held the cup for the last five years following a 6-6 tie in 2013.

The Huskers are 4-1 on the season following a 75-64 win over Tennessee-Martin on Friday night. The game featured a breakout performance by Walter Pitchford, as the junior scored a career-high 19 points, including six 3-pointers. Pitchford, who was third for the Huskers in scoring last year at 9.3 points per game, had just 14 points in the first four games.
Pitchford joins fellow juniors Terran Petteway and Shavon Shields in giving the Huskers three strong offensive threats. Petteway, a Wooden Award candidate, leads the Huskers and is third in the Big Ten in scoring at 20.2 points per game, while Shields is fourth in the conference in scoring at 19.8 ppg. Petteway had 18 points and a career best eight assists on Friday, while Shields had a career-high 35 points against Omaha on Tuesday.
Florida State comes into Monday’s game with a 3-3 record following a 58-47 win over Charleston Southern on Friday. The Seminoles, who went 22-15 and reached the NIT last season, have battled injuries early and have been without Aaron Thomas, who leads FSU at 14.0 ppg, and Devon Bookert for the last three games. Freshman Xavier Rathan-Mayes has stepped in and is averaging 13.8 points per game and 3.6 assists per contest.

Penn State Serves Past Huskers

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersSTATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The No. 10 Nebraska volleyball team closed out the regular season on Saturday night, falling 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-16) at No. 4 Penn State at Rec Hall.

The Huskers finished the regular season 20-9 overall and 14-6 in the Big Ten. Penn State finished 30-3 overall and 18-2 in the Big Ten.

Kelsey Fien had a team-high 10 kills. Meghan Haggerty added seven kills, her most in her last 17 matches. Alicia Ostrander also added seven kills. Mary Pollmiller had 25 assists, and Justine Wong-Orantes had 13 digs.

Nebraska hit .133 for the match, while Penn State hit .257. The Nittany Lions served up eight aces, a season high by a Husker foe. All-American setter Micha Hancock had four in the first eight points of the match. She added 33 set assists. Ali Frantti had a match-high 17 kills.

Hancock, the NCAA leader in service aces with 105 entering the match, began her Senior Night with two straight aces and added two more in her run to spark Penn State to an 8-0 lead in set one. But the Huskers got out of the serve with an Amber Rolfzen kill and ripped off a 10-3 run to cut the deficit to 11-10. Haggerty had two kills and a block with Fien to boost the Huskers back into the set. But Penn State came back with four straight points to go up 15-10 at the media timeout, the last point coming on its fifth service ace of the set. Fien recorded two kills out of the timeout to get Nebraska back within 15-13. After Penn State built the lead to 21-17, the Huskers came back to within 21-19 on a kill by Haggerty and a big swing by Pollmiller after a set from Sydney Townsend. After a Penn State timeout, the Nittany Lions went in the net to trim their lead to 21-20. Haleigh Washington killed for a 22-20 lead, and Lacey Fuller served up an ace to make it 23-20. The Nittany Lions held on for the 25-21 win.

The Huskers took a 3-1 lead in the second set but Penn State rallied to go up 6-3. Later, three kills by Frantti and a Dominique Gonzalez ace gave the Nittany Lions a 14-7 lead, and they pushed it to 18-9 before the Huskers’ second timeout of the set. Penn State finished off the 25-15 win to take the second set, hitting .419 after hitting just .105 in the first set. Meanwhile, after hitting .290 in set one, NU cooled off to a .061 hitting percentage in set two.

Penn State got off to another quick start in set three, taking a 6-2 lead after a 5-0 run. Kills by Haggerty and Fien pulled the Huskers back within 9-6, and another Haggerty kill followed by a PSU hitting error cut it to 14-12. But Penn State closed the set on an 11-4 run to win 25-16.

The 2014 NCAA Tournament Selection Show will air on ESPNU on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The first and second round begins next weekend. Should the Huskers be selected to host the first and second round at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, tickets would go on sale online at Huskers.com on Sunday at 9 p.m.

Nebraska returns home after completing a three-game sweep of Pac-12 Conference foes with a 71-66 win at UCLA on Friday.

Junior Rachel Theriot led the Huskers back from a 16-point first-half deficit by scoring 19 of her game-high 24 points in the second half against the Bruins. The 6-0 junior point guard from Middleburg Heights, Ohio, was named to the preseason watch lists for both the Wooden Award and the Wade Trophy earlier this week. Theriot, who added a career-high eight rebounds and a season-high seven assists against the Bruins, leads four Huskers in double figures on the season with 18.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and a team-high 5.0 assists on the year.

Senior forward Emily Cady added 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field at UCLA to increase her season averages to 14.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists. In her last appearance in Lincoln, Cady erupted for a career-high 25 points in a win over Utah.

Senior guard Tear’a Laudermill added 15 points, including a trio of threes and a career-high-tying four steals at UCLA to push her season averages to 13.0 points per game. Fellow senior guard Brandi Jeffery pitched in 11 points against the Bruins and is averaging 11.2 points and 5.2 boards on the year.

Another 9-Win Season Can’t Stop Bo Pelini Debate

Bo-Pelini-Huskers-Football-Another nine-win season puts Nebraska in elite company in college football. Only Alabama and Oregon can match the Cornhuskers’ streak of winning at least that many games every season since 2008.

But the debate for Nebraska fans — and what athletic director Shawn Eichorst must decide — is whether that’s good enough for a program with the proud history of the Cornhuskers.

Pelini is 66-27, the highest win total for a Nebraska coach through his first seven seasons and one more than Hall of Famer Tom Osborne had.

But the Huskers (9-3, 5-3 Big Ten) still haven’t won a conference championship since 1999, and they’ve had a habit of losing high-stakes games by big margins the past four seasons. Also, Pelini hasn’t come out of a season with fewer than four losses.

A fan base that has sold out an NCAA-record 340 straight games since 1962 is splintered. Some argue Pelini has hit a ceiling and isn’t capable of taking the program further. Others argue that Nebraska would be crazy to fire a coach who is winning 71 percent of his games.

Pelini said after Friday’s 37-34 overtime win at Iowa that he hadn’t had any conversations with Eichorst about his future. “That’s the furthest thing from my mind,” Pelini said.

Pelini added, “I know what we have going. People can make their deductions any way they want. And they’re going to say whatever they want. I couldn’t care less.”

The Huskers went into Iowa City off back-to-back losses in conference games for the first time since 2008, and they found themselves down 17 points after the Hawkeyes’ Drew Ott returned a punt that bounced off the back of an offensive lineman 12 yards for a touchdown.

Nebraska scored 21 straight points, with De’Mornay Pierson-El’ls 80-yard punt return giving the Huskers their first lead. Iowa went ahead again, but Drew Brown’s 20-yard field goal sent the game into overtime.

Tommy Armstrong Jr.’s career-high fourth touchdown pass, a 9-yarder to Kenny Bell, won it for the Huskers. Bell became the third Nebraska player ever to record 20 career touchdown catches.

He said it would have been easy for the Huskers to fold, especially with injuries having taken a toll on the offensive line and other positions.

“There’s no Big Ten championship, there’s no accolades or awards for winning this football game,” Bell said. “We just rolled up our sleeves and went to work. We kept fighting like we always do.”

The 17-point comeback tied for the largest road comeback in school history and for the second-largest overall comeback in program history.

Now Nebraska will wait a week to find out its postseason destination, with the Holiday Bowl in San Diego on Dec. 27 a good possibility. The opponent would be from the Pac-12.

Between now and then, the debate over Pelini and the direction of the program will undoubtedly continue.

Pitchford, Nebraska get past UT-Martin 75-64

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Walter Pitchford missed all five of his three point attempts against Omaha Tuesday. Friday, Pitchford hit his first four 3-pointers and finished with a career-high six threes and 19 points to lead Nebraska past Tennessee-Martin 75-64.

“Somebody said I was in a slump, I say ‘What slump?,’ Pitchford said “It’s not in my vocabulary…Some nights they go in, some nights they don’t. Changes? I put in a little extra time in the gym, just concentrating, tweaking little things.”

Nebraska coach Tim Miles said he and assistant Kenya Hunter worked with Pitchford on his shot in practice this week, then ran plays for him to start the game.

“He’s worked really hard to get a rhythm shooting,” Miles said. “We ran some stuff for him early. I thought that was critical and it got him going.”

Nebraska (4-1) used a 17-4 run in the last seven minutes of the first half to take a 13-point halftime lead. The Huskers stretched that advantage to 19 on Benny Parkers’ free throws with 14:26 left.

Tennessee-Martin (3-2) then responded with a 17-2 run of its own, slicing the Nebraska lead to 54-50 after the second of Deville Smith’s back-to-back 3 pointers with 9:10 remaining.

Terran Petteway’s jumper started a 10-3 Nebraska run that was capped by Shavon Shields’ layup with 6:38 left and made the score 64-53. The Skyhawks cut the Nebraska lead to 8 on Twymond Howard’s jumper with 56 seconds left. Nebraska made five of six free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

The Huskers trailed 24-23 after Myles Taylor’s free throws with 6:36 in the half. Tai Webster hit a 3-pointer to start a 17-3 Nebraska half-closing run. Webster’s jumper with 51 seconds left put Nebraska up by double digits for the first time and Tarin Smith’s buzzer-beating layup pushed the halftime lead to 40-27.

“We had a lot of good things going offensively,” Miles said. “I thought we were a little tired tonight, both teams were. Thanksgiving does that to you. That turkey makes you sleepy. We got the lead, then they started draining the 3s. I liked what we were doing offensively for a long time.”

Tennessee-Martin coach Heath Schroyer also liked how his team played on offense, but they had no answer for what Pitchford brought Friday.

“We have been pretty good offensively so far this season,” Schroyer said. “We have shot 50 percent on the year, and I thought we got pretty good looks tonight, when guys stepped up and made them. Pitchford came out and hit his first three 3s. It makes them really hard to guard when that five-man can start knocking down shots and spreading the floor.”

Howard had 18 points to lead Tennessee-Martin. Smith had 15 points for the Skyhawks, Taylor finished with 11 and Alex Anderson had 10.

Petteway finished with 18 points and a career-high 8 assists for Nebraska.

TIP-INS

Nebraska: Shavon Shields, Nebraska’s leading scorer averaging 23 points a game coming into Friday’s contest, had just five points on 2-of-9 shooting. “You thought there’s no way he’s going to be sustaining that high level,” said Nebraska coach Tim Miles. “I’m glad Walt (Pitchford) picked us up.”

Tennessee-Martin: Friday’s game was the second of six straight road games for the Skyhawks. Tennessee-Martin won’t play at home again until it faces Presbyterian on Dec. 20.

No. 15 Huskers Rally for Win at UCLA

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLos Angeles – No. 15 Nebraska trailed by as many as 16 points, but rallied down the stretch for a 71-66 women’s basketball win over UCLA at Pauley Pavilion on Fridayafternoon.

Junior Rachel Theriot scored 19 of her game-high 24 points in the second half to lead the Big Red to their fifth straight win to open the season, while UCLA slipped to 0-4 with all four losses to current top-25 teams.

Theriot, a 6-0 point guard from Middleburg Heights, Ohio, erupted for 13 points in the final 5:43 to help the Huskers erase an eight-point deficit with just over seven minutes left. Theriot sealed the win by hitting eight consecutive free throws in the final 1:02.

Senior forward Emily Cady added 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field, including a three-pointer, while adding five rebounds, an assist and two steals.

Senior guard Tear’a Laudermill added 15 points, three rebounds, three assists and four steals. Laudermill’s three three-pointers in the final five minutes of the first half allowed the Huskers to turn a 16-point deficit in the first half into a 33-26 UCLA margin at halftime.

Senior guard Brandi Jeffery gave the Huskers four players in double figures with 11 points, including a huge three-pointer to give Nebraska a 63-57 lead with 1:54 left in the game.

Nebraska found a way to win despite a season-high 22 turnovers, while also being outrebounded 39-36. Theriot committed a career-high eight turnovers in the game, but just one in the second half to fuel the Husker comeback. She finished with team highs of seven assists and eight rebounds to go along with her game-high 24 points. She went 4-of-7 from the floor, including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. She was also 13-of-14 at the free throw line.

The Huskers hit 40 percent (20-50) from the field, including 9-of-23 threes. NU also went 22-of-26 at the free throw line – all in the second half.

UCLA built leads of 16 points on two occasions in the first half, the last time at 33-17 with 4:04 left on a jumper by Corinne Costa. However, a three-pointer by Theriot (3:03) and back-to-back threes by Laudermill (1:491:23) got the Huskers back within striking distance at halftime.

The Bruins did not score in the final four minutes of the first half, then went nearly seven minutes without a field goal in the final 7:30 of the game, as Nebraska prevailed.

For the game, UCLA hit just 35.8 percent (24-67) of its shots from the floor, including 8-of-20 threes. The Bruins were 10-of-15 at the free throw line and committed 18 turnovers, including 10 in the second half.

Jordin Canada led four Bruins in double figures with 14 points, six assists and six steals. Kari Korver added 13 points, including 11 points in a span of just two minutes after Nebraska cut the Bruin lead to two points at 39-37 with 13:30 left in the game.

Nirra Fields added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Costa added 10 points of her own.

The Huskers return home to face unbeaten Northern Colorado on Sunday. Tip-off between the Big Red and the Bears at Pinnacle Bank Arena is set for 2 p.m.

On Tuesday, the Huskers received an outstanding performance from Shavon Shields, who had a career-high 35 points, including four 3-pointers, and eight rebounds. The junior wing is second in the Big Ten at 23.5 points per game and is sixth in rebounding at 8.0 per game. Shields was one of three Huskers in double figures in the win over UNO.
Nebraska has been strong offensively, putting up 80 or more points in each of its first three home games, the first time since the 1995-96 season that Nebraska has scored at least 80 points in its first three home games. It is also the first time since 2006-07 that the Huskers have scored 80 or more points in three consecutive home contests.

Tennessee-Martin comes to town riding a three-game win streak following a 74-56 win at Bethune Cookman on Tuesday. Tonight’s game will be the second of six straight road games for the Skyhawks, as they will not play another home game until Dec. 20. UT-Martin is coached by Heath Schroyer, who served as the head coach of Wyoming for four seasons while Nebraska Coach Tim Miles was at Colorado State.

Husker Win Streak Comes to an End in Five Sets at No. 11 Illinois

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersCHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Despite a spirited comeback to force a fifth set, the No. 10 Nebraska volleyball team fell at No. 11 Illinois, 3-2 (25-16, 22-25, 25-18, 24-26, 15-10), on Wednesday night at Huff Hall.

The loss snapped the Huskers’ eight-match win streak and perfect month of November. Nebraska dropped to 20-8 overall and 14-5 in the Big Ten, while Illinois moved to 23-7 and 15-4 in conference play. The Illini improved their home record to 11-1 this season.

Kadie Rolfzen had a team-high 19 kills with 11 digs. Kelsey Fien added 13 kills, and Amber Rolfzen had eight kills and 10 digs with five blocks. The Huskers outblocked Illinois 16-10, led by 10 blocks from Cecilia Hall. But Nebraska committed 11 service errors and hit just .146 for the match, while Illinois hit .232 and outdug NU 78-69.

Mary Pollmiller had 39 assists, and Justine Wong-Orantes had a team-high 20 digs.

Jocelynn Birks led the Illini with 22 kills and added 10 digs. Michelle Strizak had 15 kills, and Liz McMahon had 13. Morganne Criswell, who had 21 kills against the Huskers in Lincoln on Oct. 18, sat out the first four sets with an injury but came in to the match in set five to post four kills and lead the Illini in the decisive set.

Illinois broke free from a 5-5 tie in set one with a 7-0 run to stake a 12-5 lead. Strizak had three kills and a block in that stretch. Two kills by Fien and a Hall/Pollmiller block cut it to 12-8, but the Illini quickly restored the seven-point lead at 16-9 and pushed it to 22-13 before settling on the 25-16 win. The Huskers hit just .032 in the set with eight attacking errors.

Illinois led set two 9-7 before a Fien kill and block by Amber Rolfzen and Hall to tie it at 9-9. After trading sideouts, the Huskers strung together three straight with an Illini hitting error, Kadie Rolfzen kill and Annika Albrecht ace for a 13-10 lead. NU went up 17-13 on back-to-back kills by Amber and Kadie Rolfzen. Leading 18-15, the Huskers got a kill from Pollmiller and ace serve from Kadie Rolfzen for a 20-15 lead. Two more kills from Fien helped put the Huskers up 23-18 before Illinois drew within 23-20. But after Nebraska called timeout to set up an attack for Kadie Rolfzen, the Huskers had set point at 24-20. Illinois fought off two set points, but again out of a timeout the Huskers ran a play to set up Kadie Rolfzen, and she delivered the winning point to give the Huskers the 25-22 win and even the match.

The teams engaged in a sideout battle early in the third set before Illinois gained a 14-9 lead with a 4-0 run. Nebraska came back, sparked by a spectacular dig by Albrecht leading to a Kadie Rolfzen kill, and then an Albrecht kill of her own to get within 14-12. But the Illini went up 17-12 with kills by Birks and Ali Stark around a Husker attacking error, and after Illinois went up 18-13, the Huskers never got closer than five points again. NU fought off two set points down 24-16, but the Illini finished the 25-18 win to go up 2-1.

A tremendous hustle play in the fourth set that saw Kadie Rolfzen fly into the bench and Sydney Townsend dig up three near kills led to a Husker block to tie the fourth set at 9-9. NU went up 12-11 on a kill by Amber Rolfzen, but the Illini went on a key 5-0 run to lead 16-12. The Huskers got within 17-15 on a Townsend service ace, and a Fien kill cut it to 19-18. But back-to-back kills by McMahon put Illinois up 21-18 and forced the Huskers’ final timeout. The Huskers pulled within 22-21 after a Hall/Amber Rolfzen block and kill by Hall, and Illinois took a timeout. After the timeout, Albrecht tallied her third ace of the night to tie the set 22-22. Back-to-back Kadie Rolfzen kills gave the Huskers set point at 24-23, but Birks took one swing to tie it 24-24. However, Kadie Rolfzen completed the comeback with two more kills to record the Huskers’ last four kills of the set for a 26-24 win.

After the Huskers took a 1-0 lead in set five, Birks went out with an injury for the Illini. But they subbed in Criswell, who had been sitting out injured until then. Criswell – who had 21 kills against the Huskers on Oct. 18, immediately posted three kills on five swings to put Illinois up 5-4. Amber Rolfzen killed to tie it 5-5, but the Illini took the next three points for an 8-5 lead before the teams switched sides. The Huskers got within 9-7 after an Illini service error, but a service error of their own, followed by a collision going for the ball put Illinois up 11-7. Criswell’s fourth kill of the set made it 13-8 Illini. NU pulled within 13-10 after a stuff by Hall and Kadie Rolfzen, but the Huskers’ 11th service error of the night gave Illinois match point, and the Illini won 15-10 after a Husker attacking error.

Nebraska closes the regular season on Saturday at No. 4 Penn State at 7:30 p.m. (CT) on Big Ten Network.
