Green, the No. 2 wrestler at 157 pounds, won by a 6-4 decision over No. 3 Ian Miller of Kent State. Miller struck first with a takedown in the opening period, but gave Green a free release. Huskers Complete Weekend Sweep at Maryland

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersCollege Park, Md. – The No. 14 Nebraska volleyball team finished off its second sweep of the weekend with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-16) victory over Maryland at XFINITY Center Pavilion Saturday night.

With the win, the Huskers improved their record to 14-7 overall and 8-4 in the Big Ten, marking the first back-to-back wins for the Huskers since sweeping Iowa in the first week of Big Ten play. Maryland dropped to 9-14 overall and 2-10 in the Big Ten.

Kadie Rolfzen led the Huskers for the second straight night with 11 kills. Kelsey Fien had nine while hitting .389, and Amber Rolfzen had seven kills and five blocks. Meghan Haggerty also had five blocks to go with four kills. Mary Pollmiller had 28 assists and five kills of her own. Justine Wong-Orantes had a team-high 13 digs.

Maryland got 12 kills from Ashleigh Crutcher, but the Huskers held her to a .033 hitting percentage. NU outhit the Terps .329 to .100 and held Maryland to -.032 in the second set and .032 in the third set. The Huskers outblocked the Terps 9-6 and outdug them 31-29.

The Huskers built an early 3-1 lead on kills by Kadie Rolfzen, Fien and Amber Rolfzen. Maryland responded and went up 13-10 after a kill by Ashlyn MacGregor. But the Huskers put together a 4-0 run to go up 14-13 with a kill by Kadie Rolfzen and two combined blocks with Haggerty involved in both. However, the Terrapins went up 20-18 with consecutive kills by Hailey Murray and Emily Fraik. The Terps committed a service error to let NU within 21-20, and Melanie Keil and Amber Rolfzen tied the set at 21-21 with a combined stuff. The Huskers gained a 23-22 advantage after consecutive Maryland attacking errors, and NU earned set point with an Amber Rolfzen kill. After Crutcher pulled Maryland within one and forced an NU timeout, Kadie Rolfzen terminated immediately out of the timeout for the 25-23 Husker win. The Huskers hit a blistering .542 in the set with 14 kills and just one attacking error, but Maryland hit .321 to keep the set neck and neck.

Maryland took a 5-1 lead in set two before the Huskers went on a 4-0 run to tie it, keyed by blocks by Amber and Kadie Rolfzen, as well as a kill from Keil. The Huskers took their first lead of game two at 9-8 on a bad set by Maryland, but the Terps responded to go up 12-10 before back-to-back kills by Fien tied it 12-12. Another Fien swing made it 14-13 Huskers before Kadie Rolfzen blasted a kill to make it 15-13 and force a Maryland timeout. After the timeout, Annika Albrecht served an ace and Kadie Rolfzen connected again for a 17-13 Husker lead. The Terrapins won four straight rallies, however, to tie it at 18-18, aided by two Husker attacking errors and a double-hit call. Kadie Rolfzen tacked on two more kills to put NU up 21-19, but the Terps came back and tied it 21-21. Fien hammered down an overpass for a 22-21 lead, but the Huskers’ seventh service error tied it 22-22 after a Maryland timeout. Pollmiller produced a key kill for a 23-22 lead before a Maryland hit into the net gave NU set point. Amber Rolfzen connected after a long rally to put the Huskers up 2-0 with a 25-22 victory.

The Huskers took control in set three early on, going up 5-2 on an Albrecht ace after a stuff by Kadie Rolfzen and Cecilia Hall. A Haggerty/Pollmiller block put the Huskers up 9-4, forcing a Maryland timeout. Four straight Maryland errors gave the Huskers an 19-10 advantage. After Maryland got within 22-16, Nebraska finished out the sweep with the final three points on kills by Pollmiller, Haggerty and Fien.

After completing a four-match road stretch with a 3-1 record, the Huskers now return home for four straight matches, beginning Wednesday, Nov. 5 against Purdue at 6:30 p.m. on BTN.

Abdullah has run for at least 200 yards in a nation-leading four games. He has 1,250 yards this season and is the only player in Nebraska history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in three straight years.

Huskers Sweep Past Rutgers

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersNew Brunswick, N.J. – The No. 14 Nebraska volleyball team took care of business in a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-18) sweep at Rutgers on Friday night at College Ave. Gym.

The win was the first-ever for the Huskers against their new Big Ten foe, although the teams only met once previously in 1978.

Kadie Rolfzen led the Huskers (13-7, 7-4 Big Ten) with 20 kills and hit .372. Kelsey Fien added 12 kills, and Amber Rolfzen had eight kills, nine digs and four blocks. Melanie Keil chipped in six kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Mary Pollmiller had 42 set assists, and Justine Wong-Orantes led the team in digs with 16.

Lauren Cloyd led Rutgers (7-17, 0-11 Big Ten) with 12 kills, and Mikaela Matthews had eight. The two had just two combined attacking errors and hit .439, while the rest of the Scarlet Knights hit .051 on the night.

The Huskers hit .292 as a team to .198 for Rutgers. Nebraska had a 49-47 advantage in digs. Rutgers outblocked NU 9.0-6.5.

The Huskers had to play from behind to begin the match, rallying from a 14-11 deficit to take a 15-14 lead after four consecutive kills by Kadie Rolfzen. That lead marked NU’s first of the match. Rutgers, however, did not go away and had the set even at 23-23, forcing the Huskers’ second timeout. Nebraska finished strong, though, with a Kadie Rolfzen kill and a Pollmiller/Meghan Haggerty stuff to finish the set at 25-23. Rutgers outhit NU .361 to .298 in the first set and had a 5-1 blocks advantage. But Nebraska scored 20 of its 25 points on kills. Kadie and Amber Rolfzen had nine and five kills in the set, respectively, and the duo combined to hit .393.

Nebraska jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the second set, but Rutgers regrouped and rallied to take a 10-9 lead on a Matthews kill. Kira Larson entered the match and produced two key kills to give the Huskers one-point leads, but Rutgers tied it each time. The Huskers put together a 3-0 run to go up 20-17 with a kill by Fien and a block by Amber Rolfzen and Keil. But Rutgers fought to win the next two points and cut it to 20-19. The Huskers finished out the 25-21 win on the strong play at the net of Larson and Amber Rolfzen. The two teamed up for back-to-back blocks and got their hands on numerous other Scarlet Knight attacks to ensure the Huskers took a 2-0 lead.

Set three was back and forth, but Kadie Rolfzen tipped a kill, and Pollmiller won a joust at the net for a 14-11 Big Red lead. Rutgers pulled within 15-14, but consecutive kills by Fien and a hitting error by Rutgers made it 18-14 NU. Leading 19-17, the Huskers got another kill from Fien and Annika Albrecht’s second ace of the night to go up 21-17. After a Rutgers timeout, Keil and Amber Rolfzen combined for a block, and then Keil and Kadie Rolfzen teamed up to put NU up 23-17 before the Huskers wrapped up the sweep.

The Huskers are right back at it on Saturday at 6 p.m. (CT) at Maryland, who was swept by Iowa on Friday evening. No TV or Internet viewing options are available for Saturday’s match.

Nebraska’s four-player senior class of Emily Cady, Hailie Sample, Tear’a Laudermill and Brandi Jeffery form the heart of the Husker lineup in 2014-15, after helping the Big Red to the most successful three-year stretch in school history.

Cady and Sample have started all 100 games over the past three years, helping the Huskers to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and 25 wins per season. NU’s .750 winning percentage over the past three years represents the most successful stretch in school history.
In 2014-15, returning starters Cady, Sample and Laudermill and three-year contributor Jeffery will try to become the first class in school history to compete in four consecutive NCAA tournaments.

Big Red Begins in AP Top 25
The Huskers opened the season at No. 16 in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll released on Thursday, Oct. 30. Nebraska closed the 2013-14 campaign at No. 13 in the AP rankings, which did not include NCAA Tournament results.

NU, which went 26-7 last season and 12-4 in the Big Ten before winning its first Big Ten Tournament title, ended the season at No. 17 in the final USA Today Coaches Top 25. Both Nebraska’s final AP and Coaches Top 25 rankings were the second-best year-end rankings in school history. The Huskers have finished the season in the AP Top 25 four times in the past five years.

The Huskers finished No. 19 in the official NCAA RPI, which was its third-best RPI finish in history – all in the last five seasons.

Before Nebraska Coach Connie Yori came to Nebraska for the 2002-03 season, the Huskers had never finished a season ranked in the top 25 in either of the major polls or the RPI.

Husker Season Ticket Sales Reach Another All-Time High
Nebraska’s second season inside the spectacular Pinnacle Bank Arena promises to be packed with action from start to finish, and Husker women’s basketball fans are showing that they want to see it all in person this season.

Heading into their exhibition opener with Wayne State on Sunday, Nov. 2, Nebraska had already sold a school-record 3,887 season tickets for the 2014-15 campaign.

In their first season at Pinnacle Bank Arena in 2013-14, Nebraska shattered its previous season ticket sales record with more than 3,700. The previous record came in 2010-11, when NU sold approximately 2,700 season tickets.

Last season, Nebraska ranked No. 11 nationally with an average home attendance of 6,161 fans per game. The Huskers ranked No. 8 nationally in total attendance with 110,892 fans flocking to the arena to watch the Big Red roll to a 16-2 home record.

Theriot Claims Preseason All-Big Ten Honors
Nebraska junior Rachel Theriot captured preseason first-team All-Big Ten team announced at Big Ten Conference Women’s Basketball Media Day on Thursday, Oct. 16.

Theriot, a 6-0 point guard from Middleburg Heights, Ohio, joined senior point guards Rachel Banham (Minnesota) and Samantha Logic (Iowa) on the five-play honor squads of both the conference coaches and media. Michigan State sophomore Aerial Powers and Northwestern sophomore Nia Coffey rounded out the coaches top five. Sophomores Amanda Zahui from Minnesota and Lexie Brown from Maryland, along with junior Ameryst Alston from Ohio State claimed spots on the media’s six-player team.

As a team, Nebraska was picked No. 3 in the conference by the media, trailing Maryland and Michigan State. Iowa earned the No. 3 spot ahead of the Huskers in the coaches ranking of the top three teams.

Scouting the Wayne State Wildcats
Coach Chris Kielsmeier brings a talented Wayne State team to Lincoln for Sunday’s game. The Wildcats are coming off one of the best seasons in school history in 2013-14, when they ran to a 28-5 overall record and their third Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular-season title in the last four years. They also earned their fourth trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament in the last five seasons.

Wayne State opens the 2014-15 season at No. 6 in the Division II Women’s Bulletin Preseason Top 25. Kielsmeier, who owns an impressive 144-40 record entering his seventh season at Wayne State, is a 1999 graduate of Iowa State and spent time as an intern under Coach Bill Fennelly with the Cyclones before spending one season as an assistant at Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas, in 1999-2000. He became Howard Payne’s head coach in 2000.

The Wildcats featured an efficient offense under Kielsmeier in 2013-14, averaging 75.8 points per game while hitting 46.2 percent of their shots, including 38.3 percent of their threes. WSC also knocked down 75.2 percent of its free throws. The Wildcats owned a plus-3.1 team turnover margin and committed just 14.0 turnovers per game last season.

Wayne State returns just two starters from last year’s team, but those two were WSC’s top two scorers.

Jordan Spencer, a 5-11 senior forward from Omaha, averaged a team-best 16.2 points while adding 6.2 rebounds last season. The UNO transfer and Millard West grad also led the Wildcats with 51 steals.

Senior Ashton Yossi added 11.5 points and 2.8 boards as WSC’s top three-point threat. The 5-8 guard from Dallas Center, Iowa, knocked down 68 three-pointers while shooting at a 38 percent clip from long range.

Wayne State’s No. 3 scorer from a year ago, Millie Niggeling also returns after averaging 11.3 points and 3.5 boards per game. Niggeling, a 6-1 senior forward out of Iowa’s Sioux City Heelan High School, came off the bench every game last season. She underwent offseason shoulder surgery and recently returned to practice, but is not expected to play against Nebraska in the exhibition opener.

The Wildcats must replace starters Addy Roller (9.1 ppg) and Ellen Hansen (8.8 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 4.7 apg), who both started all 33 games last season. Wayne State also lost starter Shantel Lehmann, who averaged 3.4 points and 2.7 rebounds while starting all 33 contests.

Wayne State could rely on former Husker Sadie Murren to make an instant impact. Murren, a 5-8 guard from Colon, Neb., is expected to start at guard for the Wildcats to help compensate for the 76 combined threes and nearly 40 percent three-point shooting that WSC got from Roller and Hansen in 2013-14.

The Wildcats also added another Division I transfer in Haley Moore. The 5-8 guard from Milford, Neb., went to Wayne State after spending the 2013-14 season with Coach Tory Verdi at Eastern Michigan. WSC added junior college forward Lauren Davis from Gillette College along with a solid five-player freshman class that includes 6-1 forward Paige Ballinger from Pender, Neb., and 6-3 freshman center Taylor Reiner out of Thunder Ridge High School in Highlands Ranch, Colo.

Freshman center Maggie Schulte from Wynot, Neb., or redshirt freshman Alex Nelson from LaVista, Neb., could earn a start alongside 6-2 junior center Katie Hoskins from Wayne High School.

Kentucky Earns No. 1 Nod in AP Preseason Poll, Nebraska 21st

basketballKentucky is No. 1 in The Associated Press preseason Top 25 for the second straight season.

The Wildcats lived up to expectations last season, overcoming a midseason slump to reach the national championship game, where they lost to Connecticut.

With most of that team back and another stellar recruiting class in place, Kentucky received 52 first-place votes from the 65-member panel to become the fourth team to earn consecutive preseason No. 1s.

Arizona was No. 2, receiving five first-place votes. No. 3 Wisconsin, with most of its team returning from last year’s Final Four run, had eight first-place votes but were 35 points behind Arizona in overall points.

Duke and Kansas round out the top five, followed by North Carolina, Florida, Louisville, Virginia and Texas.
