Nebraska-Rutgers Game gets Saturday Morning Start

nebraska_helmetLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska football players and fans will have to set their alarms earlier next Saturday for the team’s first morning game since early September.

The kickoff for Nebraska’s game against Rutgers will be 11 a.m. Central Saturday in Lincoln. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

Nebraska’s (6-1, 2-1 Big Ten) last five games have been played at night, including last Saturday’s 38-17 win over Northwestern.

Rutgers (5-2, 1-2 Big Ten) is coming into the game off a loss against Ohio State.

Abdullah Drives Nebraska Past Northwestern 38-17

nebraska_helmetEVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Ameer Abdullah had four 1-yard touchdown runs and quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. scored on a 16-yard reception, leading No. 19 Nebraska to a 38-17 victory at Northwestern on Saturday night.

Abdullah finished with 146 yards on 23 carries as the Cornhuskers (6-1, 2-1 Big Ten) bounced back from a 27-22 loss at Michigan State. Abdullah had only 45 yards in the loss to the Spartans on Oct. 4.

Northwestern (3-4, 2-2) wasted another big game for freshman Justin Jackson in its second consecutive loss. Jackson had 128 yards and two touchdowns in his third straight 100-yard game.

The Wildcats got a scare in the third quarter when receiver Miles Shuler had his head down when he slammed into Nebraska safety Corey Cooper after a short reception. Shuler held up his right arm to acknowledge the cheers as he was taken off the field on a stretcher. The school said he was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

Huskers Come Up Short Against Illinois

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersLincoln – The No. 13 Nebraska volleyball team (11-6, 5-3 Big Ten) fell to No. 15 Illinois (14-5, 6-2 Big Ten) at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Saturday afternoon, 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-27, 21-25).

Alicia Ostrander had a career-high 19 kills to lead the Huskers. Kadie Rolfzen had 12 kills, and Amber Rolfzen had 11 kills and 13 digs. Cecilia Hall had six kills and eight blocks, while Meghan Haggerty had six kills and five blocks. Mary Pollmiller added six kills with her 44 set assists. Justine Wong-Orantes had 22 digs.

Illinois’ Morganne Criswell had a season-high 21 kills, while Jocelynn Birks, the Big Ten leader in kills per set in conference play, had 19. Alexis Viliunas had 56 assists.

Illinois narrowly outhit Nebraska .228 to .224. Both teams had 14 blocks and 68 digs.

Illinois took set one, 25-23, coming back from a 20-18 deficit to take a 21-20 lead after a Birks kill. The Huskers tied it up at 22-22 on a kill by Hall, but a Katie Stadick kill and block with Viliunas gave Illinois a 24-22 lead, forcing a Husker timeout. After Illinois let Nebraska within one via a service error, Criswell finished off the set with a shot to the back row.

The Huskers led 7-4 in set two but let Illinois go on a 4-0 run to gain an 8-7 lead. With the set tied 16-16, Illinois committed a service error and Ostrander killed to make it 18-16 and force an Illinois timeout. Nebraska never allowed Illinois to draw even again in the set. The Huskers separated from a 19-18 lead with a 4-0 run with two kills by Kadie Rolfzen and a block by Hall and Amber Rolfzen to make it 23-18. Illinois fought off three set points, but the Huskers finally ended it at 25-21 on a kill from Hall right down the middle.

Set three was back-and-forth the whole way. The Illini claimed a three-point lead at 18-15, but the Huskers clawed back with a dump by Pollmiller, a kill by Ostrander and then an Ostrander/Hall block to even it at 18-18. Illinois got back-to-back kills by Criswell to go up 23-21, and another Criswell kill gave the Illini set point at 24-22. Nebraska came back to tie it on kills by Haggerty and Kadie Rolfzen. With the set tied at 25-25, Liz McMahon won a long rally for Illinois, and the Huskers misfired to give Illinios the edge in the match with a 27-25 victory.

Set four began with a 4-0 Illinois run, and the Illini extended the lead to 10-4, forcing the Huskers to use their second and final timeout of the set. Criswell had two blocks and a kill during a 3-0 spurt to put the Illini up 10-4. Trailing 17-11, the Huskers put together a furious rally to pull within 19-17 and force an Illini timeout. Haggerty had a kill and two blocks along the way. But the Huskers could get no closer, as Illinois pulled away to the 25-21 win.

Nebraska is on the road for the next four matches, beginning at Minnesota on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. That match will be on BTN.

Huskers Shutout Boilermakers, 1-0

huskersoccerLincoln, Neb. – Sophomore forward Jaycie Johnson scored in the 20th minute to lead Nebraska to a 1-0 victory over Purdue at the Nebraska Soccer Field on Friday evening.

Johnson’s goal, which marked her 10th of the season, came from five yards out as she juked the Boilermaker goalkeeper after receiving a pass from senior Caroline Gray. The assist marked Gray’s third of the season.

Johnson and Gray set the tone for Nebraska’s offense, as the pair combined for four of NU’s six shots on goal. They each had two, while Katie Kraeutner and Mayme Conroy each added one.

Nebraska took a 1-0 lead into the locker room despite being outshot 9-5. In the second half, the Huskers outshot Purdue 6-1 and the defense held strong to preserve the victory. Goalkeeper Kelly Schatz earned two saves en route to her third complete game shutout of the season.

Three Former Huskers Capture Gold With Team USA
Team USA – with former Huskers Kayla Banwarth, Jordan Larson-Burbach and Kelsey Robinson – beat China 3-1 (27-25, 25-20, 16-25, 26-24) on Oct. 12 to win the FIVB World Championship in Italy. The U.S. Women had never before won gold at any of the three major international volleyball events: World Championship, World Cup or Olympic Games. Larson-Burbach was one of the team’s top hitters throughout the tournament, while Banwarth captured the starting libero role and never relinquished it. Robinson, one of the team’s youngest players, was a key contributor in the early rounds of the tournament.

Huskers Extend Record Poll Streak to 470 Weeks
Nebraska has appeared in every one of the AVCA’s 470 all-time weekly polls. NU and Stanford are the only two programs to appear in every AVCA poll, dating back to its inception in 1982. Nebraska has spent a nation-leading 422 weeks in the top 10.

Huskers’ Lone Senior Among the Nation’s Best
Tri-captain Mary Pollmiller is Nebraska’s lone senior in 2014. The Huskers may only have one senior, but Pollmiller is one of the nation’s top setters. She is in her second season at Nebraska after spending her first two years at Tennessee in 2011 and 2012. Pollmiller was the 2011 SEC Freshman of the Year, and she has earned honorable-mention AVCA All-America accolades twice in her career, including last season (also in 2011). Pollmiller owns 4,597 career assists, a total that ranks fourth nationally. Three of the nation’s top-four active players in career assists are Big Ten Conference setters.

Huskers Ready to Roll After Bye Week

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska football team went through a 45-minute walkthrough inside the Hawks Championship Center on Thursday in preparation for Saturday’s game against Northwestern. Head Coach Bo Pelini spoke to the media after practice.

“We just finished up,” Pelini said. “I think we had a good week. The kids are anxious to play. I know I am.”

Pelini added that sophomore tight end Cethan Carter is out for a couple weeks, but linebacker David Santos “is good to go.” Pelini also said that wide receiver Brandon Reilly is “ready to go” and talked about the other receivers as well.

“Taariq (Allen) gets a lot of reps and has been around a little bit,” Pelini said. “Alonzo (Moore) is still coming. He’s getting better. It comes with time and it comes with reps, and getting out there and getting a chance to do it for real. There’s only so many reps to go around. They’ve gotten more opportunities and I think they are getting better.”

The last three meetings between Northwestern and Nebraska have been decided by seven total points, including last season’s Hail Mary win at Memorial Stadium. Pelini said that history suggests this one will be close.

“I’m always hoping for the best,” Pelini said. “(I’m hoping) that it’s not so close, but I told our guys. We have a lot of respect for this team. We better be ready for a dogfight.”

Pelini added that he’s “not a big fan” of bye weeks, but thought this season’s came at a good time after a 5-1 start.

“Health-wise it came at a good time for us,” Pelini said. “It really did.”

The Huskers and Northwestern square off on Saturday at 6:30 p.m., at Ryan Field in Evanston, Ill. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.

Huskers Ranked 21st in Preseason Coaches Poll

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe Nebraska men’s basketball team broke into the USA Today preseason coaches’ poll released Thursday, as the Huskers were ranked 21st with a total of 153 points.

Nebraska, which is coming off a 19-13 season capped by an NCAA Tournament appearance, returns all five starters, including All-Big Ten selections Terran Petteway and Shavon Shields, heading into its season opener against Northern Kentucky on Nov. 16.

The Huskers are ranked in the preseason poll for only the second time since USA Today took over the poll in 1991, and the first since being ranked 22nd at the start of the 1992-93 season. It also marks the first time the Huskers have been ranked in the coaches’ poll since December of 1994.

The Big Ten is well represented with six schools featured in the preseason rankings by 32 Division I head coaches. The group is headed by Wisconsin, which was chosen as the Big Ten preseason favorite by the media on Thursday, as the Badgers are ranked fourth. Other ranked teams include Michigan State (18th), Ohio State (20th), Michigan (23rd) and Iowa (25th), while Minnesota and Illinois are also receiving votes.

Fans can get their first opportunity to see the Huskers on Wednesday, Oct. 29, as the Huskers host the Big Red Tip-Off at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The event is open to the public and begins at 6:30 p.m.

Nebraska Adds Akron to 2018 Football Schedule

nebraska_helmetNebraska has completed its 2018 non-conference football schedule with the addition of a home game against the University of Akron.

The Huskers will play host to the Zips in the season opener on Sept. 1, 2018. The matchup will be the second all-time meeting between Nebraska and Akron. The Huskers defeated Akron, 59-14, in the 1997 season opener at Memorial Stadium.

Akron is coached by Terry Bowden, who is in his third season at the school. The Zips own a 4-2 record in 2014, including a victory at Pittsburgh.

The matchup with Akron completes a 2018 non-conference schedule that also includes home games against Colorado (Sept. 8) and Troy (Sept. 15).

Nebraska will play nine Big Ten games in 2018, including four home contests against Purdue, Minnesota, Illinois and Michigan State. The Huskers’ 2018 road schedule includes games at Michigan, at Wisconsin, at Northwestern, at Ohio State and at Iowa.

With the exception of one non-conference game to be scheduled in 2017, Nebraska’s future schedules are complete through the 2019 season.

Theriot Earns Preseason All-Big Ten Honors

Rachel Theriot Nebraska HuskersNebraska point guard Rachel Theriot earned preseason first-team All-Big Ten honors from conference coaches and media, when the Big Ten announced its preseason awards on Thursday, Oct. 16.

The awards were announced while Theriot and Nebraska Coach Connie Yori were in Chicago attending Big Ten Basketball Media Day.

Theriot, a 6-0 junior from Middleburg Heights, Ohio, averaged 14.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 7.1 assists per game last season to help the Huskers to a 26-7 overall record and a trip to the second round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament. She was even better in Big Ten play, averaging 15.6 points, 3.6 boards and 7.3 assists per contest while carrying a Big Ten-best 2.7-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. She helped the Huskers to a 12-4 conference mark.

Theriot was at her best during Nebraska’s run to the Big Ten Tournament title, averaging 18.7 points and 10.0 assists, including a Big Ten Tournament-record 18 assists in a second-round win over Minnesota. They were the most assists by a Big Ten player against a Big Ten opponent in history.

A first-team All-Big Ten selection as a sophomore, Theriot added Big Ten Tournament MVP honors, before being named an honorable-mention All-American by the Associated Press.

Theriot was joined on the Big Ten coaches’ five-player preseason team by Iowa senior point guard Samantha Logic, Michigan State sophomore guard Aerial Powers, Northwestern sophomore forward Nia Coffey and Minnesota senior guard Rachel Banham, who was named preseason Big Ten Player of the Year by both the coaches and the media.

The media chose Theriot, Logic and Banham along with Ohio State junior guard Ameryst Alston, Minnesota sophomore center Amanda Zahui B., and Maryland sophomore guard Lexie Brown.

As a team, Nebraska was picked to finish third in the media’s preseason conference power rankings, trailing preseason favorite Maryland and No. 2 Michigan State. Maryland, which enters its first season in the Big Ten, is coming off a trip to the NCAA Women’s Final Four. Michigan State shared the 2014 Big Ten regular-season title with Penn State.

Iowa was the preseason No. 3 pick by the conference coaches behind Maryland and Michigan State. The Big Ten does not announce a full preseason team poll, but chooses only the top-three teams in the conference.

BTN to Debut Brook Berringer Documentary

Brook Berringer Nebraska Huskers UnbeatenThe story of Brook Berringer, a beloved Husker quarterback who is best remembered for his resilience and selflessness in the face of adversity and his tragic death two days before the NFL draft, is legendary in the Cornhusker State.

On Oct. 18, BTN Originals debuts “Unbeaten: The Life of Brook Berringer.” The hour-long documentary, presented by Physicians Mutual, will be shown immediately following the Huskers-Northwestern game on BTN/BTN2Go.

Bill Friedman, BTN’s coordinating producer for original programming, said “Unbeaten” is just not a sports story, but a story about human character.

“Brook was way ahead of his time,” Friedman said. “He built a reputation for giving back and he is beloved because so many think he represents what a Nebraskan should be.

“His life is a great college football story that happens to take place in Nebraska.”

Berringer began the 1994 season as the Huskers’ backup quarterback but was thrust into the starting role when Heisman Trophy candidate Tommie Frazier was diagnosed with blood clots. Berringer helped lead the team to seven straight wins and a berth in the Orange Bowl against Miami. While Frazier returned to start the game, Berringer entered in the second quarter and helped spark a comeback. The win capped off the undefeated season, and gave Coach Tom Osborne his first national championship.

As the 1995 season dawned, Berringer and Frazier engaged in a spirited battle for the starting job, which Frazier won by a narrow margin. Berringer selflessly accepted his backup role that season as Frazier and the Huskers rolled to a second straight national championship.

The following spring, two days before the 1996 NFL draft, Berringer lost control of the two-seater plane he was piloting and died when the plane crashed. He was 22.

“Unbeaten” features rare footage of Berringer on camera, highlights of some key Husker games leading up to the national championship and interviews with Frazier, Osborne, and Brook’s mother, Jan Berringer, who shares some of the thousands of letters she received in the wake of his death.

The BTN Originals crew also was in Lincoln in September when the 1994 championship team was honored before the Huskers’ 41-31 victory over Miami. The crew captured exclusive footage and an interview with Berringer’s teenage nephew, who walked onto the field wearing a No. 18 jersey in honor of the uncle he never met.

“Unbeaten” is directed by Matthew Engel and Kevin Shaw, who together also directed “Tiebreaker,” the story of the 1973 Ohio State-Michigan football game that ended in a 10-10 tie and its controversial aftermath. The “Unbeaten” premiere will have limited commercial interruptions.
