Chiefs Unsteady, Uneven in Preseason Opener

Kansas City Chiefs HelmetKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Depending on which part of the Chiefs’ preseason opener Andy Reid chose to watch, he could have come away thrilled about the prospects for the upcoming season or deeply depressed.

There were two touchdowns by the defense — and many more blown coverages. There were three-and-outs and fumbles by the offense — along with long touchdown passes and dynamic runs. On special teams, there was an electrifying punt return touchdown but several boneheaded decisions.

The Chiefs wound up beating Cincinnati 41-39 on Thursday night, but the result was mostly a moot point. Reid said there were positives and negatives from the preseason opener, and plenty of work to do before the Chiefs visit Carolina on Aug. 17.

Chiefs Beat Bengals 41-39 in Preseason Opener

Kansas City Chiefs HelmetKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Sean Smith and Malcolm Bronson returned interceptions for touchdowns, De’Anthony Thomas brought back a punt 80 yards for another score and the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Cincinnati Bengals 41-39 in their preseason opener Thursday night.

Andy Dalton was sharp in his only series for the Bengals after signing a new six-year deal this week. He hit wide receiver A.J. Green for a 53-yard pass to set up the opening field goal.

He quickly gave way to backup Jason Campbell, who was just 6 of 15 for 72 yards. And while he threw a pair of touchdown passes, he also was responsible for the pick-6s by Smith and Bronson before getting banged up midway through the third quarter.

The Bengals’ Dre Kirkpatrick also returned an interception for a touchdown.

Dalton, Smith in Spotlight as Bengals Visit Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs HelmetKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Quarterback Andy Dalton is armed with a new contract that could keep him with the Bengals through the 200 season. It may just set the market for Chiefs counterpart Alex Smith.

On Thursday night, Smith will get a chance to prove whether the two of them are truly comparable when the Chiefs play the Bengals in the preseason opener for both teams.

Dalton has led Cincinnati to the playoffs in each of his first three seasons, but he’s yet to win a playoff game. The Bengals were bounced by the Chargers last season.

Smith helped to turn around a two-win team prior to his arrival, going 11-5 and making the playoffs last year. But the Chiefs blew a 38-10 second-half lead in a 45-44 playoff loss in Indianapolis, leaving Smith and the rest of the team eager for the start of a new season.

Chiefs’ Charles Sets Sights on Hall of Fame

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — At some point this season, likely within the first couple of games, Jamaal Charles will slide past Larry Johnson and breeze past Priest Holmes to become the Chiefs’ career rushing leader.

It’s a goal, sure. But it’s only a rest-stop on the way to loftier expectations.

After arguably the best season of his career and now armed with a new contract extension, Charles has his sights set on the Hall of Fame. The two-time All-Pro running back wants his name to be mentioned in the same breath as Emmitt Smith and Barry Sanders, players he grew up idolizing in Port Arthur, Texas, and who will forever be considered some of the best to play the game.

“It’s all about staying consistent,” Charles said. “I want to be in the Hall of Fame when I retire. I want to win a championship. That’s what it’s all about.”

Chiefs’ Berry, Cooper Return to Practice

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry and starting cornerback Marcus Cooper are practicing again at training camp following minor injuries.

Berry missed time with a sore right heel. Cooper tweaked a hamstring.

Their return Sunday was the first positive injury news in a while for the Chiefs. They have been struggling with injuries, especially in their suspect secondary.

Backup safety Sanders Commings is out after surgery for a severe high ankle sprain and fractured fibula. Reserve defensive backs David Van Dyke, DeMarcus Van Dyke and Phillip Gaines also have missed time with various injuries.

Linebacker Dezman Moses left Sunday’s workout after hurting his elbow.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Marcus Cooper joined the lengthy list of Chiefs defensive backs that were forced to watch practice Saturday after tweaking his hamstring during an early portion of the workout.

Cooper has been starting at one of the cornerback positions throughout camp.

The Chiefs were already missing Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry, who hurt his right heel during Thursday’s drill. Backup safety Sanders Commings is out after having surgery on a severe high ankle sprain and for a fracture to his fibula.

Reserve defensive backs David Van Dyke, DeMarcus Van Dyke and Phillip Gaines have also missed time with injuries. All the banged-up bodies forced the Chiefs to sign veteran defensive back Steve Gregory earlier this week.

Commings Out After Surgery for Fractured Fibula

Kansas City Chiefs HelmetST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs received good news on the injury to All-Pro safety Eric Berry.

Berry, who left Thursday’s training camp practice with what the team said was a sore ankle, has a right heel injury according to team spokesman Ted Crews.

Berry did not practice Friday, but was observed walking without a noticeable limp.

“There’s just letting him have a few days just to let that relax,” Crews said.

The news, however, isn’t as good surrounding second-year defensive back Sanders Commings.

“He had very similar to a high ankle sprain, but to the extreme where he needed surgery to repair that high ankle sprain,” Chiefs head athletic training Rick Burkholder said.

“As his foot externally rotated on the play, he fractured his fibula.”

Chiefs Safety Berry Leaves Practice with Injury

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Eric Berry left Chiefs practice on Thursday after hurting his lower right leg, the second injury that the Pro Bowl safety has sustained so far in training camp.

Berry missed some time earlier with a dislocated finger.

It was unclear what happened to Berry during one of the early sessions of practice at Missouri Western. He was checked by trainers in the injury tent next to the field, then talked with other team officials on the sideline before leaving the field on a cart.

Berry was able to put weight on the leg, but was noticeably limping. Chiefs coach Andy Reid was expected to discuss the nature and severity of the injury after practice.

Chiefs QB Smith Focusing on Football, Not Contract

Alex Smith Kansas City ChiefsST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith says that the time is approaching where he will shelve all talk about a contract extension and focus solely on football for the remainder of the season.

The Chiefs have been discussing a new deal with Smiths’ representatives for months, though the sides remain far apart. Smith said after practice Wednesday that he’s yet to set a date to break off negotiations, but he acknowledged that “at some point mentally it’ll come to me.”

Smith is due $7.5 million this season, the final year of his contract, and many expect him to get an extension similar to what Colin Kaepernick received from the San Francisco 49ers.

Kaepernick signed a six-year, $126 million deal that includes $61 million guaranteed.

Chiefs S Commings Leaves Field with Ankle Injury

Kansas City Chiefs HelmetST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Oft-injured Chiefs safety Sanders Commings was carted off the practice field Wednesday after getting juked to the ground by running back Jamaal Charles and hurting his right ankle.

Commings broke his collarbone in his first practice as a rookie and was finally getting up to speed. He was trying to tackle Charles in the open field when he whiffed, turning his ankle in such a way that he was unable to put any weight on it.

Commings was in a heated competition for a backup job, and the Chiefs hoped he would push veteran Husain Abdullah for the free safety spot that opened when Kendrick Lewis departed.

Meanwhile, right tackle Donald Stephenson returned to practice after missing Monday’s workout with a left ankle injury. The Chiefs had Tuesday off.
