KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A person familiar with the situation says the Kansas City Chiefs have signed defensive end Allen Bailey to a four-year, $25 million contract extension.

Bailey is guaranteed $15 million and will receive a $10 million signing bonus, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the Chiefs had not announced the deal.

Pro Football Talk was the first to report the extension.

The 25-year-old Bailey has had a breakout season for the Chiefs, starting all nine games and establishing a career-high four sacks. He’s helped the Chiefs deal with season-ending injuries to two starters and still become one of the NFL’s best defenses.

Bailey, a former third-round pick, was due to become a free agent after this season.

Chiefs Promote West, Sign Supernaw after Injuries

Kansas City Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have promoted running back Charcandrick West from the practice squad and signed tight end Phillip Supernaw after losing Cyrus Gray and Demetrius Harris to season-ending injuries.

West signed with the Chiefs as a rookie free agent this season, and had spent nine weeks on their practice squad. Supernaw has played four games in two seasons with the Ravens and Texans, and has spent time on both practice squads.

Gray, a special teams standout, tore an ACL in Sunday’s victory in Buffalo. Harris broke a bone in his foot during pregame warmups before facing the Bills. Both were put on injured reserve.

The Chiefs signed tight end Adam Schiltz to fill their open spot on the practice squad.

Winners of four straight, Kansas City plays Seattle on Sunday.

Chiefs Lose Gray, Harris to Injuries vs Bills

Kansas City Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have lost backup running back Cyrus Gray for the season with a torn knee ligament. Tight end Demetrius Harris is also sidelined with a broken foot.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirmed that Gray, a special teams standout, will miss the rest of the season after tearing an ALC in the third quarter of Sunday’s 17-13 victory over Buffalo. Harris, a former basketball player in college, broke his foot during warmups prior to the game.

Reid said the rest of the team came out relatively healthy heading into Sunday’s showdown against the Super Bowl champion Seahawks. Running back Jamaal Charles had a neck stinger and tight end Anthony Fasano a bruised knee, but both would have been able to practice Monday.

Chiefs Rally to 17-13 Win over Bumbling Bills

Kansas City Chiefs LogoORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Anthony Sherman recovered a fumble to set up Alex Smith’s 8-yard touchdown run with nearly 9 minutes left in allowing the Kansas City Chiefs rally to a 17-13 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

Jamaal Charles also scored on a 39-yard touchdown run as the Chiefs (6-3) scored twice in span of 4:31 to overcome a 13-3 deficit. The Chiefs defense then made a stand at its own 15 by forcing Bills quarterback Kyle Orton to throw four consecutive incompletions and turn the ball over on downs with 2:32 left.

Smith scored two plays after Sherman punched the ball out of the hands of Bills punt-returner Leodis McKelvin and then pounced on the loose ball at Buffalo’s 26.

Orton hit Chris Hogan for a 25-yard touchdown pass for Buffalo (5-4). The Bills settled for two field goals, and Bryce Brown lost a fumble, in three trips inside the Chiefs 20.

Chiefs Activate Joe Mays from Injured Reserve

Kansas City Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have activated linebacker Joe Mays from short-term injured reserve and waived linebacker Jerry Franklin ahead of Sunday’s game in Buffalo.

Mays has been on IR since training camp, when he needed surgery on his injured wrist. He returned to practice Oct. 29, at which point the Chiefs had three weeks to activate him.

How much he’ll play for the Chiefs (5-3) against the Bills remains to be seen.

Inside linebacker Derrick Johnson is on IR after tearing his Achilles tendon, so Josh Mauga and James-Michael Johnson have been starting. Mauga leads the Chiefs in tackles.

Franklin had been serving as a backup and played primarily on special teams.

Chiefs Wide Receivers Still Searching for Score

Kansas City Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Perhaps it’s just a fluke, but the Kansas city Chiefs are halfway through the season and no wide receiver has caught a touchdown pass yet.

The previous time that happened was 2009, when the Cleveland Browns went their first nine games without a wide receiver catching a TD pass.

Still, nobody on the Chiefs sideline appears to be worried about it, especially considering they’re 5-3 and have won five of their past six games heading into Sunday’s game at Buffalo.

Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith pointed out that his running backs and tight ends have plenty of touchdown grabs, and it’s only a matter of time until the wide receivers get involved.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have signed fullback Anthony Sherman, who has helped pave the way for one of the NFL’s top rushing offenses, to a three-year contract extension.

A person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Monday that Sherman can earn up to $7 million over the life of the contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Chiefs did not reveal the terms of the contract.

Sherman has started 21 of the 51 games he’s played in over the past four seasons. The past two have been spent in Kansas City, where has been the lead blocker for Jamaal Charles.

Sherman has also proven valuable as a short-yardage receiver out of the backfield, catching 36 passes for 315 yards and two touchdowns in his career.

Alex Smith leads Chiefs past Mike Vick, Jets 24-10

Kansas City Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alex Smith threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns, Jamaal Charles ran for another score and the Kansas City Chiefs won 24-10 on Sunday, sending the New York Jets to their eighth straight loss.

Tight ends Travis Kelce and Anthony Fasano each caught touchdown passes, and the Chiefs (5-3) won their third straight and fifth in six games on the same day former running back Priest Holmes was inducted into their ring of honor.

Making his first start with the Jets (1-8), Michael Vick was 21 of 27 for 196 yards and a touchdown. He briefly left in the fourth quarter after taking a massive hit from the Chiefs’ Josh Mauga and walking unsteadily off the field, but eventually returned later in the quarter.

Chiefs Elevate Sorensen for Depth, Release Square

Kansas City Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have elevated defensive back Daniel Sorensen to the 53-man roster and released defensive end Damion Square ahead of Sunday’s game against the New York Jets.

Sorensen, who signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent, played in the season opener against Tennessee on Sept. 7 before getting released. He signed with their practice squad four days later and has been working out with the Chiefs ever since.

Kansas City was in need of depth after ruling out cornerbacks Jamell Fleming with a hamstring injury and Chris Owens with a knee injury for Sunday’s game.

Square was claimed by the Chiefs from Philadelphia on Aug. 31. He played in 10 games for the Eagles last season but had not played for the Chiefs.

Pro Bowl S Berry to Return to Chiefs vs Jets

Eric Berry

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs safety Eric Berry is expected to play for the first time since spraining his ankle in a Week 2 loss to Denver when Kansas City plays the New York Jets on Sunday.

Berry was limited in practice but listed as probable on the final injury report Friday, and Chiefs coach Andy Reid said he is planning on Berry playing against the Jets.

Reid did not say whether Berry would start.

Berry hurt his ankle early against Denver on Sept. 14. He has practiced off and on the past few weeks but has not been active on game day.

The Chiefs refused to make Berry available to reporters Friday.
