KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith plans to practice Wednesday despite spraining his troublesome throwing shoulder in last weekend’s victory over the St. Louis Rams.

Smith landed on his right shoulder shortly before halftime. He received treatment in the locker room and played the entire second half, complaining only later of a bit of soreness.

The Chiefs play the New York Jets on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.

Smith has a history of shoulder trouble dating to his days with the San Francisco 49ers. He missed eight games and finished the 2007 season on injured reserve after separating it, requiring surgery that December. He also missed the entire 2008 season after breaking a bone in the shoulder a few days before the start of the season.

Smith also separated his non-throwing shoulder in 2010.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith played through a sprained throwing shoulder that he sustained just before halftime of Sunday’s 34-7 rout of the St. Louis Rams.

Smith never mentioned the injury in his postgame remarks, and it wasn’t until Chiefs coach Andy Reid brought it up Monday that anybody learned of it outside the Kansas City locker room.

Reid said that Smith landed on his shoulder but played through the pain. The game was still very much in the balance when the injury happened, the Chiefs leading just 10-7 at the break.

Smith went through a series of examinations Monday. Reid said the quarterback is “tender” and declined to say whether he will miss any practice time this week.

The Chiefs play the New York Jets on Sunday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs insisted Wednesday that Jamaal Charles has passed a battery of tests and does not show signs of a concussion, one day after the star running back said he exhibited symptoms in last weekend’s win over San Diego.

Charles took a blow from Brandon Flowers when he dove into the endzone Sunday. Charles popped up and trotted off the field, and trainers met him on the sideline. He remained in the game.

On Tuesday, Charles told ESPN Radio that he saw “light bulbs” a few plays later, and that he tried to avoid going through the league’s concussion protocol.

After the Chiefs learned of the interview, they put Charles through a battery of tests. The team said he passed all of them.

Kansas City Chiefs LogoSAN DIEGO (AP) — Cairo Santos kicked a 48-yard field goal field goal with 21 seconds left and the Kansas City Chiefs beat San Diego 23-20 Sunday, snapping the Chargers’ five-game winning streak.

The Chiefs moved into field goal range thanks to Alex Smith, who completed three straight passes on the drive for 43 yards, including a 29-yarder to Dwayne Bowe.

Smith was playing on the same field where he led Helix High to consecutive San Diego Section championships.

Coming off their bye, the Chiefs (3-3) made the AFC West a three-team race, pulling within 1 ½ games of San Diego (5-2). The Denver Broncos (4-1) hosted San Francisco on Sunday night.

The Chargers flunked their sternest test in a month and lost for the first time since a defeat at Arizona in the season opener.

Chiefs Return from Bye Week, Turn to San Diego

Kansas City Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs hope to have Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry back for Sunday’s game in San Diego after a bye week allowed him to rest his sprained right ankle.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said that Berry would participate in Monday’s workout. He’s been out since Sept. 14, when he hurt his ankle in a loss at Denver.

Ron Parker has filled in admirably for Berry in his absence.

Defensive back Chris Owens was expected to miss the practice with a knee injury, and wide receiver Donnie Avery remains sidelined after surgery for a sports hernia.

The Chiefs are 2-3 and coming off a 22-17 loss in San Francisco before their bye.

LENEXA, Kan. (AP) — Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali is lending his support to a humanitarian organization that plans to open a clinic in his native Liberia to help combat the Ebola epidemic.

Hali was joined Tuesday by officials from Heart to Heart International, which is based in suburban Kansas City, to announced the construction of a clinic near the capital of Monrovia that will offer 70 beds for patients stricken by the disease.

Liberia has been among the hardest-hit of the West African nations at the center of the months-long outbreak, which has killed at least 3,500 people.

Hali fled with his father from Liberia at the age of 10, when it was in the midst of a bloody civil war. He still has family there but they have not been infected with Ebola.

The 49ers (3-2) turned to a trick play on fourth-and-1 from their own 29 early in the fourth quarter, giving a direct snap to Craig Dahl for a 3-yard run up the middle. Kaepernick directed the offense down field, and Phil Dawson kicked a 27-yard field goal with 8:42 to play for the go-ahead score.

Dawson also connected from 55, 52, 35 and 30 yards.

The 49ers held off former franchise quarterback Alex Smith and the Chiefs (2-3) twice in the closing moments. Smith threw for 175 yards and two touchdowns, but Perrish Cox intercepted his overthrown pass to end any chance Kansas City had to rally.

Chiefs’ Donnie Avery has Surgery on Sports Hernia

Kansas City Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs wide receiver Donnie Avery had surgery Friday for a sports hernia and has been ruled out for Sunday’s game at San Francisco, though he is expected back later this season.

The Chiefs have their bye week after playing the 49ers.

Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry also will miss his third straight game with a high ankle sprain, though wide receiver De’Anthony Thomas is expected to make his NFL debut after dealing with a hamstring injury that has kept him out since training camp.

The Chiefs also get right tackle Donald Stephenson back from a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy. Stephenson is expected to serve as the backup to Ryan Harris, who has started in his absence.

Chiefs Place RB McKnight on Injured Reserve

Kansas City Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have created space on their roster for the return of right tackle Donald Stephenson by placing running back Joe McKnight on injured reserve.

McKnight became the third Chiefs player to tear his Achilles tendon when he was hurt in practice last week. He was coming off a two-touchdown game in a win in Miami.

Stephenson was suspended for the first four games of the regular season for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. That suspension ended with Monday night’s 41-14 victory over the New England Patriots.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said earlier Tuesday that he would wait to see Stephenson practice on Wednesday before he begins to decide whether he’ll go back in the starting lineup.
