Chiefs, Houston reach 6-year, $101 million deal

justin houstonKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that the Chiefs and All-Pro linebacker Justin Houston have agreed to a six-year, $101 million contract that includes $52.5 million in guarantees.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the deal has not been announced. The sides had until late afternoon to work out a deal, otherwise Houston would have played the upcoming season under the franchise tag.

The deal is not only the richest in franchise history but also the richest for a linebacker in NFL history. The only defensive player to sign for more is Ndamukong Suh, who reached a six-year, $114 million deal with Miami.

A new-look All-Star Game finished with the same old result. The AL beat the NL 6-3 Tuesday night and will open the World Series at home for the 10th time in 13 years.

Alex Gordon is an iconic name and a popular figure in Lincoln, at the University of Nebraska, across the state and wherever Husker fans live or visit. He’s the only National Player of the Year in Nebraska baseball history and one of only two Huskers ever named a two-time first-team All-American. Gordon received those honors in 2004 and 2005.

Even though a groin injury prevents Gordon from making what would have been his first career MLB All-Star Game start tonight in Cincinnati, we salute the Lincoln native’s stature and bestow the Honorary Captain title on our All-Time Nebraska All-Star Baseball Team. Gordon personifies characteristics that Nebraska fans cherish. His team-first mindset, humble spirit and passionate work ethic enabled Gordon to emulate those priceless virtues while growing up in Lincoln and explain why he draws droves of Husker fans to so many Major League Baseball parks.

In my opinion, Gordon might have been the most influential catalyst for the incredible loyalty Kansas City fans are now known for. He exemplifies the drive and unity the Royals’ needed in their magic carpet ride to the seventh game of the 2014 World Series. TV cameras perpetually showcase fans in royal blue chanting “Let’s go Royals!” But patches of red throughout major league stadiums and spirited chants of “Go Big Red” often are woven into that foundation. No wonder Gordon loves and appreciates intensely loyal Royal fans. He grew up one himself, and it’s something he still values.

Royals’ Moustakas, Cardinals’ Martinez win final fan vote

allstar gameNEW YORK (AP) — Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas and St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Carlos Martinez are going to the All-Star Game as winners of the final fan vote.

Moustakas becomes the seventh Royals player set to participate in Tuesday’s Mid-Summer Classic in Cincinnati. He beat out Minnesota’s Brian Dozier, Tigers outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts for the last American League spot. Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner was in the final five, but he replaced Moustakas’ injured teammate Alex Gordon on the roster Wednesday.

Martinez surged ahead of Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto late in the voting to become the sixth Cardinals player to make the NL roster. Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and Mets closer Jeurys Familia were also in contention.
