Pino’s throwing error in 9th gives Tigers 6-5 win over KC

DETROIT (AP) — Reliever Yohan Pino, called up earlier in the day by Kansas City, threw wildly to first base, allowing Anthony Gose to score the winning run in the ninth inning as the Detroit Tigers beat the Royals 6-5 on Friday night.

Gose led off the ninth with a double on Pino’s first pitch, and on the next delivery, Ian Kinsler bunted down the third-base line. Pino (0-1) fielded the ball and threw wildly to first, allowing Gose to score the winning run.

Joakim Soria (2-0) earned the win with a scoreless ninth inning.

Tigers starter David Price allowed five runs and a career-high 13 hits before leaving the game in the seventh inning with a fluke injury. On the single by Alex Gordon that gave Kansas City a 5-4 lead, Price stepped on a discarded bat and appeared to injure his ankle.

DETROIT (AP) — The Royals placed left-hander Jason Vargas on the disabled list and reinstated shortstop Alcides Escobar from the seven-day concussion list.

Vargas allowed two runs over five innings Tuesday night and spent a long time in the trainer’s room after the game. The team said then his back was being treated. On Friday, his injury was listed as a left flexor strain.

The Royals also placed third baseman Mike Moustakas on the three-day bereavement list in a series of roster moves before opening a three-game set against the Tigers.

Recently acquired catcher Drew Butera joined the club following his trade from the Angels and right-hander Yohan Pino was recalled from Triple-A Omaha. Catcher Francisco Pena had been optioned to Omaha following Thursday’s win over Cleveland.

Cy Young winner Kluber winless this year, Royals top Indians

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber remained winless through seven starts this year, with Eric Hosmer hitting a three-run homer in the first inning that sent the Kansas City Royals over the Cleveland Indians 7-4 Thursday.

Kluber (0-5) matched the record for most winless starts by a pitcher after winning a Cy Young . Zack Greinke in 2010 and Frank Viola in 1989 also went seven in a row without a victory.

Kluber gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks in 5 2-3 innings, and left with a 5.04 ERA. In his past four starts, Kluber has a 7.43 ERA, yielding 38 hits and 19 earned runs in 23 innings.

The Cleveland ace went 18-9 with a 2.44 ERA last year.

Franklin Morales (3-0) won with two innings in relief.

Rain delayed the start of the game by two hours, 17 minutes.

Royals acquire Butera from Angels, activate Hochevar

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals have acquired catcher Drew Butera from Los Angeles Angels for minor league infielder Ryan Jackson.

Butera, 31, hit .190 (4 for 21) in 10 games with the Angels this season. He batted .188 for the Los Angeles Dodgers last year following four years with Minnesota.

Jackson, acquired in November from the Dodgers, has an .083 average in 20 big league games with St. Louis in 2012-13.

To make room for Butera on the 40-man roster, Kansas City transferred left-hander Tim Collins to the 60-day disabled list. He is recovering from Tommy John surgery in March.

Right-hander Luke Hochevar, who missed last season after elbow surgery, was activated from the disabled list Thursday after nine injury rehabiliation appearances with Triple-A Omaha. The Royals optioned rookie left-hander Brandon Finnegan, who went 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA in four relief appearances, to Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The suspensions for Kansas City Royals reliever Kelvin Herrera have been cut by Major League Baseball from seven games to six.

Herrera began serving the penalty Thursday when the Royals hosted Cleveland.

The hard-throwing Herrera appealed after being suspended for two separate incidents.

Herrera’s five-game ban for throwing behind the back of Oakland’s Brett Lawrie last month was upheld. Herrera’s penalty for a brawl with the Chicago White Sox on April 23 was reduced from two games to one.

Herrera is 0-1 with a 2.19 ERA in 13 games. He pitched Tuesday and Wednesday against the Indians.

Indians rough up Danny Duffy, roll to 10-3 win over Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Just about everyone in the Cleveland lineup drove in a run, Carlos Carrasco tossed seven sharp innings and the Indians rolled to a 10-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.

Brandon Moss homered and added a two-run double to lead the charge, but six other Indians also drove in runs, helping Carrasco (4-2) end a three-game skid against the Royals.

He gave up a two-run homer to Kendrys Morales, but otherwise shut down a Kansas City lineup that returned hot-hitting outfielder Lorenzo Cain from a two-game suspension.

Cleveland had already taken a 4-0 lead when Danny Duffy (2-1) was yanked after facing five batters without getting an out in the second. The Royals’ bullpen briefly slowed the onslaught, but the Indians added four more runs in the seventh to put the game away.

Manfred says shortening regular season a popular topic

Rob Manfred

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred says shortening the regular season is becoming a popular topic as players and owners prepare to negotiate a new labor deal.

In his first year on the job, Manfred was at Minute Maid Park before Wednesday night’s game between the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros as part of an effort to meet with players from all 30 teams. He also spoke with reporters about several issues, including Pete Rose, pace of play, domestic violence and the designated hitter.

Manfred says reducing the number of games in a season would have economic and competitive ramifications, but the topic is receiving more attention than it ever has.

He noted that playing 162 games in 183 days is tough on players.

Kipnis, Salazar Help Indians Break Losing Streak

kc-royalsCLEVELAND (AP) — Jason Kipnis homered and drove in four runs to help the Cleveland Indians snap a four-game losing streak with a 7-5 win over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.

Kipnis hit a three-run home run — his first since July 31 of last season — in the third and then capped another three-run rally in the sixth with an RBI grounder. Michael Bourn’s double gave Cleveland the lead.

Danny Salazar (3-0) allowed four runs in six innings.

Kansas City shortstop Alcides Escobar suffered a bruised left cheek after being hit in the head by a pitch from Salazar in the fifth inning. The ball struck Escobar on the left side of the helmet and he was on the ground for several moments. He walked off the field with help from two Royals trainers.

Yordano Ventura (2-2) allowed five runs in 5 1-3 innings.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Kansas City Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar was hit in the head by a pitch from Cleveland’s Danny Salazar in the fifth inning on Wednesday.

Escobar was hit in the left side of the helmet and dropped to the ground immediately as two Royals trainers rushed on the field.

Escobar stayed down for several moments before being moved into a sitting position. He walked to the dugout with help from the trainers and was taken to the clubhouse.

Salazar was upset over the incident and patted his hand in his glove as Escobar left the field. Kansas City’s Mike Moustakas, the on-deck hitter, knelt down while several Indians in the field looked on in concern.

Kansas City pitcher Yordano Ventura, who was ejected from his last two starts and is facing a seven-game suspension, didn’t retaliate in the bottom of the inning.

Royals Score 6 in 7th to Overtake Indians 11-5

kc-royalsCLEVELAND (AP) — Kendry Morales’ three-run homer capped a six-run seventh inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Cleveland Indians 11-5 on Tuesday night.

Kansas City’s big inning came after Cleveland had taken a 5-3 lead on Brandon Moss’ three-run homer in the sixth.

Alcides Escobar’s two-run double off Scott Atchison (0-1) tied the game. Escobar scored the go-ahead run from second on Mike Moustakas’ infield hit and Morales later hit his third homer of the season to dead center off Bryan Shaw.

Brandon Finnegan (1-0) picked up his first career win despite allowing Moss’ home run.

Alex Gordon homered and drove in two runs for the Royals, who had a season-high 18 hits.
