MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have signed 42-year-old outfielder Raul Ibanez, nine days after he was released by the Los Angeles Angels.

The Royals made several moves Monday before their game at Minnesota. Ibanez and infielder Christian Colon were added to the roster, and infielder Pedro Ciriaco and outfielder Justin Maxwell were designated for assignment.

Ibanez batted just .157 in 57 games for the Angels, but 10 of his 26 hits were for extra bases. He spent three seasons with the Royals, starting in 2001. This is his fifth team since 2011. Ibanez hit 29 home runs just last year for Seattle.

Colon was recalled from Triple-A. The fourth overall pick in the 2010 draft was batting .296 with 48 runs, 14 doubles and 14 steals in 74 games for Omaha.

Infante’s Single in 9th Lifts Royals over Angels

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Omar Infante delivered another big hit against the Angels, singling home the winning run with one out in the ninth inning to send the Kansas City Royals over Los Angeles 5-4 Sunday.

Lorenzo Cain hit three doubles for the Royals, finishing with four hits and two RBIs.

An error by second baseman Howie Kendrick set up the game-ending hit by Infante, whose grand slam Friday night helped beat the Angels.

Infante’s single came against Los Angeles newcomer Jason Grilli (0-3). Pittsburgh traded its former closer to the Angels on Friday.

Greg Holland (1-2) struck out two in the ninth.

Angels Stay Hot, Beat Royals 6-2

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Albert Pujols and David Freese combined to drive in five runs as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Kansas City Royals 6-2 on Saturday for their seventh victory in eight games.

There were two rain delays with the second after the fourth inning lasting 3:58. The game didn’t end until nearly 7 hours after it started.

Pujols, who has 14 RBIs in his past 13 games, singled home runs in the third and sixth innings. Freese, who had three hits, drove in three runs, two in the four-run sixth and the other in fourth. He has six RBIs in his past seven games, after driving in only three in his previous 26 games.

Rookie right-hander Mike Morin (2-1), who went to high school at a Kansas City suburb, allowed two runs on two hits over two innings to pick up the victory.

Royals rookie Yordano Ventura (5-7) took the loss.

Royals Sign First-Round Pick Finnegan

Finnegan Kansas City RoyalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals signed first-round draft pick Brandon Finnegan, a left-handed pitcher who helped lead TCU to the College World Series, on Saturday.

Finnegan signed for $2,200,600, the slotted money for the 17th overall pick. With Finnegan agreeing to terms, the Royals have signed all 12 of their picks in the first 10 rounds.

Finnegan, who went 9-3 with a 2.04 ERA while striking out 134 in 105 2-3 innings as a junior, will report Monday to the Royals’ High-A Wilmington (Del.) affiliate.

He pitched for Team USA last summer and beat Cuba 1-0, allowing three hits, striking out seven and walking one in seven innings.

Finnegan was a 2011 45th round pick of the Texas Rangers out of Fort Worth Southwest High, but did not sign, opting to go to TCU.

Infante’s Slam Sends Royals to 8-6 Win over Angels

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Omar Infante capped a seven-run inning with his first career grand slam, and the Kansas City Royals held on to beat the Los Angeles Angels 8-6 on a rough Friday night for starting pitchers.

Jason Vargas and Angels counterpart Matt Shoemaker (5-2) combined to give up 14 runs on 20 hits — four of them home runs. Neither got an out in the fifth inning.

Michael Mariot (1-0) picked up with his first career win with 1 1-3 innings of relief, and Greg Holland earned his 23rd save by tossing a perfect ninth.

Salvador Perez had three hits while Lorenzo Cain, Billy Butler and Alex Gordon each drove in a run for Kansas City, which ended the Angels’ six-game winning streak despite limping into the series having lost six of seven.

Bases-Loaded HBP in 8th Helps Dodgers Beat KC 5-4

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Wade Davis plunked A.J. Ellis of the Dodgers with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth inning Wednesday night, sending Los Angeles to a 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

Jamey Wright (3-2) threw 2 2-3 scoreless innings in relief of Dan Haren to pick up the win.

Davis (5-2) had not allowed a run in 22 1-3 innings spanning his last 20 outings. But after nearly escaping a jam by catching Adrian Gonzalez in a rundown between third base and home for the second out of the eighth, the reliever walked Scott Van Slyke to load the bases.

Davis then had a 1-2 count on Ellis before hitting him in the shoulder.

J.P. Howell and Brandon League worked the bottom of the eighth for the Dodgers, and Brian Wilson handled the ninth in place of closer Kenley Jansen for his first save since April 12, 2012.

Kershaw Pitches Dodgers to 2-0 Win over Royals

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Clayton Kershaw followed his first career no-hitter with eight marvelous innings, Adrian Gonzalez and Andre Ethier drove in a run apiece and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Kansas City Royals 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Kershaw (8-2) allowed six hits and a walk while striking out eight. The two-time Cy Young winner hasn’t allowed a run in 21 1-3 innings, spanning his near-perfect game against Colorado on Wednesday — the only runner occurred on an error — and his previous start against Arizona.

Kenley Jansen pitched a perfect ninth for his 23rd save.

Danny Duffy (4-7) dueled admirably with Kershaw for six innings, allowing one run on four hits and four walks. But the left-hander was done in by a high pitch count, needing a season-high 105, and was eventually lifted to protect his surgically repaired shoulder.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals have activated left-hander Bruce Chen from the 60-day disabled list and sent him to the bullpen in a long relief role.

To clear roster space before Tuesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Royals optioned reliever Tim Collins to Triple-A Omaha and designated fellow left-hander Donnie Joseph for assignment.

Chen began the season in the Kansas City rotation before landing on the DL with a bulging disk in his back. He made four minor league rehab starts, three at Omaha, and struck out 11 over 5 1-3 innings last weekend against Albuquerque.

The veteran left-hander, who has worked out of the bullpen in the past, has not appeared in a big league game since April 24. He is 1-2 with a 7.45 ERA on the season.

Court: Royals Fan Hit by Hot Dog Gets New Trial

gavel-moreKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Missouri Supreme Court has ordered a new trial for a Kansas City Royals fan injured by a hot dog tossed by the team mascot.

The unanimous opinion Tuesday from the state’s highest court centered on a legal standard called the baseball rule. That rule says fans cannot sue teams over injuries caused by events on the field, court or rink. The court said it does not apply to a mascot tossing hot dogs.

The court said the risk of being injured by a tossed hot dog isn’t inherent to baseball. It sent the case back for a new trial.

John Coomer of Overland Park, Kansas, says he was injured at a 2009 game when team mascot Sluggerrr threw a hot dog into the stands, striking Coomer in the eye.
