Gordon’s 3 RBIs Help Royals Beat White Sox 7-5

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alex Gordon drove in three runs and Jeremy Guthrie pitched effectively into the sixth inning as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 7-5 in their home opener Friday.

Gordon hit a bases-clearing double in the first inning and Guthrie allowed four runs on seven hits, four walks and a hit batter in 5 2-3 innings.

Lorenzo Cain drove in two runs with a two-out fifth inning single that put Kansas City ahead 7-2.

The Royals jumped on White Sox rookie right-hander Erik Johnson for six hits and four runs in the first two innings. Johnson retired only 14 of the 28 batters he faced, yielding seven runs on 10 hits, three walks and a hit batter to take the loss.

Jose Abreu and Conor Gillaspie hit sacrifice flies against Guthrie, and Adam Eaton hit a two-run single off reliever Kelvin Herrera in the sixth, but both runs were charged to Guthrie.

Tyler Flowers, who went 4-for-4 Thursday against Minnesota, had hits in his first three at-bats, but the streak ended in the eighth when Aoki dropped his fly ball to right.

The Royals, who had not made a challenge in spring training or in the first two games against the Tigers, asked the umpires to review a call in the seventh when Abreu was called safe at first on a throwing error by third baseman Mike Moustakas that pulled Eric Hosmer’s foot off the bag. After a two minute, 49 second delay, the call was upheld.

Greg Holland pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save after setting a Royals’ record with 47 saves last season.

Notes: RHP Nate Jones was put on the disabled list by the White Sox with a muscle strain in his left hip. RHP Jake Petricka was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte. Jones had allowed four runs without retiring a batter in his first two appearances. Petricka pitched 2 1-3 scoreless innings after Johnson was pulled in the fifth. . LHP Bruce Chen, who is 7-2 against the White Sox since the start of the 2011 season, starts Saturday. LHP John Danks will make his first White Sox start.

Vargas Strong but Royals Lose 2-1 to Tigers in 10

DETROIT (AP) — Under last year’s rules, the Kansas City Royals would have had men on first and third with two out in the 10th inning of a tie game.

Instead, their rally ended after a replay review — but that was OK with manager Ned Yost.

“That’s exactly why the system is there — to get the call right,” Yost said.

The Royals ended up losing 2-1 to the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday when Ian Kinsler hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th. The game included two replay reviews — both of which were overturned in Detroit’s favor.

Kansas City tied it in the ninth against Tigers closer Joe Nathan, but Tim Collins (0-1) walked Austin Jackson and Nick Castellanos before allowing Kinsler’s two-out single.

“Obviously, you don’t want to walk the first guy, because then you are pitching uphill. I just couldn’t find the plate today — I had no command,” Collins said. “Kinsler’s a great hitter, and he hit a good pitch, but I would have been awfully lucky to get out of that inning after walking those two guys.”

Kinsler also homered in the fourth.

Max Scherzer pitched eight scoreless innings for the Tigers, allowing four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts. But Nathan blew his first save chance with Detroit after signing with the Tigers in the offseason.

Alex Gordon’s bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the ninth tied it.

In the 10th, Kansas City’s Norichika Aoki was called safe at first, and it looked like the Royals would have two on against Al Alburquerque (1-0). But upon further review, the throw barely beat Aoki. He was called out to end the threat.

There was another replay overturn in the sixth when Detroit’s Tyler Collins was initially called out at first, giving Kansas City a 4-6-3 double play. The play was reviewed and Collins was ruled safe, although Detroit didn’t score that inning.

Scherzer can become a free agent after this season, and if he keeps pitching like this he’ll be in line for quite a payday. With men on first and third and one out in the first, Billy Butler grounded into a double play on a 3-0 pitch.

“I thought he was swinging there 3-0,” Scherzer said. “I knew it was an early part of the game. I was throwing a fastball. He knew I was throwing a fastball, so I thought there was a chance he was swinging. So I knew we needed to get it away. Fortunately enough, he was able to roll it over. That was a huge play. I was kind of on the ropes there.”

That turned out to be the best chance Kansas City would have against Scherzer. He wasn’t in trouble again until the eighth, when Salvador Perez doubled leading off.

Scherzer rebounded to strike out Mike Moustakas and Lorenzo Cain. Alcides Escobar followed with a flyout on Scherzer’s 110th and final pitch.

Jason Vargas, who signed a $32 million, four-year contract in the offseason, was sharp in his first start for Kansas City. He allowed a run and five hits in seven innings, walking one and striking out six.

“He was great,” Yost said. “That’s a really good offense, and the only thing they got off him was Kinsler hitting a great pitch. I’ll take that kind of pitching performance every game right now.”

Umpires in Kansas City-Detroit Game Overturn 2 Calls on Review

mlb bigDETROIT (AP) — Instant replay is a hit so far at Comerica Park.

The Detroit Tigers benefited from a pair of reviews that overturned calls at first base in Wednesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals.

In the sixth inning, Tyler Collins of the Tigers was initially called out at first, giving Kansas City a 4-6-3 double play. The play was reviewed and Collins was ruled safe, although Detroit didn’t score that inning.

In the 10th, Kansas City’s Norichika Aoki was called safe at first, and it looked like the Royals would have first and third with two outs and the game tied.

But upon further review, the throw barely beat Aoki. He was called out to end the threat.

Gonzalez’s Single Lifts Tigers over Royals 4-3

kc-royalsDETROIT (AP) — Alex Gonzalez drove in the winning run in his Detroit debut, lining a single to left off Greg Holland in the ninth inning that gave the Tigers a 4-3 opening-day victory over the Kansas City Royals on Monday.

Acquired by Detroit following an injury to shortstop Jose Iglesias, Gonzalez made a costly error in Kansas City’s three-run fourth but made up for that with a tying triple in the seventh. He then singled with men on first and third in the ninth.

Joe Nathan (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth in his first appearance for the Tigers.

Wade Davis (0-1) allowed a one-out walk to Alex Avila and a single to Nick Castellanos in the ninth. Holland couldn’t escape the jam.

Royals’ Teaford Sold to Korean Club LG Twins

Everett Teaford Kansas City RoyalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The rights to Royals left-hander Everett Teaford were sold to the LG Twins of the Korean Baseball Organization after it became clear he was not going to make the team out of spring training.

Terms of the sale Sunday were not disclosed.

The 29-year-old Teaford was 4-6 with a 3.49 ERA in 31 appearances at Triple-A Omaha last season. He made one appearance at the major league level, and is 3-5 with a 4.25 ERA in 45 major league outings with Kansas City.

The Royals have plenty of pitching in the bullpen, and Teaford appeared to be one of the odd men out. He was assigned to minor league camp on March 14.

Kansas City opens the season Monday in Detroit.

Royals’ Perez Hit in Head by Pitch, Leaves Game

Salvador Perez Kansas City RoyalsPEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals has been hit in the helmet by a pitch and left the game against San Diego.

The Royals say Perez didn’t sustain a concussion Wednesday. Perez relayed through the club that he’s “fine.”

Perez was hit by a breaking ball above his left ear. The Royals catcher fell to the ground and was down for a few seconds before walking off, holding the left side of his head.

Perez was hit by reliever Johnny Barbato in the third inning. An inning earlier, Perez hit a solo home run off San Diego starter Ian Kennedy.

Last week, Perez hit the line drive that struck Cincinnati reliever Aroldis Chapman and caused facial fractures.

Royals Claim LHP Schuster off Waivers from Padres

Patrick Schuster Kansas City RoyalsSURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have plucked left-handed pitcher Patrick Schuster off waivers from the San Diego Padres.

The Royals also sent catcher Adam Moore to the Padres on Tuesday for cash considerations.

Schuster, who has not pitched above Class A, was placed on the 40-man major league roster. To clear roster space for Schuster, the Royals designated for assignment outfielder Carlos Peguero.

The 23-year-old Schuster had a 1.83 ERA in 55 games last year for Visalia in the California League. He struck out 45, allowed 30 hits, and walked 18 in 44 1-3 innings.

Tomko, Troncoso Agree to Deals with Royals

kc-royalsSURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Brett Tomko, a 14-year big league veteran who turns 41 on April 7, has agreed to a minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals.

Tomko has pitched only 17 2-3 innings in the majors since 2009, making eight relief appearances in 2011 with Texas. He was 4-8 with a 4.98 ERA in 19 starts last year with York in the independent Atlantic League.

Tomko is 100-103 with a 4.65 ERA over 14 major league seasons with Cincinnati (1997-99), Seattle (2000-01), San Diego (2002, 2007, 2008), St. Louis (2003), San Francisco (2004-05), the Los Angeles Dodgers (2006-07), Kansas City (2008), the New York Yankees (2009), Oakland (2009) and Texas (2011).

He was 2-7 with a 6.97 ERA in 10 starts and six relief appearances for the 2008 Royals.

Tomko’s deal was announced Friday, when Kansas City also said it had agreed to a minor league contract with right-hander Ramon Troncoso. The 31-year-old was 1-4 with a 4.50 ERA in 29 games last year with the Chicago White Sox. He played for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2008-11.

Shields, Vargas to Start Season for Royals

kc-royalsSURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — James Shields and Jason Vargas will start the Kansas City Royals’ first two games of the season at Detroit.

Manager Ned Yost announced opening starters Saturday and says Wade Davis is no longer a candidate for a spot in the rotation.

Davis made 24 starts before being sent to the bullpen last season. Yost says the decision on Davis was made after Luke Hochevar was lost for the season to reconstructive elbow surgery.

Yost says left-hander Danny Duffy and rookie right-hander Yordano Ventura are the remaining candidates to fill out the rotation.

Jeremy Guthrie, who led the Royals with 15 victories last year, will start the home opener on April 4 against the Chicago White Sox.

Shields, who started the opener last season, was 13-9 with a 3.15 ERA last.

Hochevar to Miss 1st 2 Months after Hurting Elbow

Luke Hochevar Kansas City RoyalsSURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Kansas City Royals right-hander Luke Hochevar likely will miss at least the first two months of the season because of a sprained ligament in his right elbow.

Hochevar, the first pick in the 2006 amateur draft, felt something unusual in the elbow during his next-to-last pitch Monday in a two-inning outing against the Chicago White Sox, according to manager Ned Yost.

The sprain was revealed in an MRI taken Tuesday.

Yost said Wednesday Hochevar won’t throw for two-to-three weeks and “probably the best-case scenario” would be a return at the end of May or early June.

Hochevar was 5-2 with a 1.92 ERA and two saves in 58 relief appearances last year and was a candidate for the final rotation slot this season. He is earning $5.21 million and is eligible for free agency after the season.
