Royals’ Maxwell Returns to Team, Smith Sent Down

Justin-Maxwell-Royals-KansaKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Royals outfielder Justin Maxwell returned from the bereavement list and was in the starting lineup playing right field for Tuesday night’s series opener against the White Sox.

The Royals cleared roster space for him by sending reliever Will Smith to Triple-A Omaha.

Maxwell was acquired from the Astros at the July 31 trade deadline, and was hitting .406 with three homers and seven RBIs since arriving in Kansas City. He left the team after the opener of a doubleheader last Friday in Detroit because of the death of his grandmother.

In other news, third baseman Mike Moustakas continues to deal with a strained left calf. Manager Ned Yost said he’ll likely play Wednesday when the Royals face a right-handed starter.

Cabrera’s 40th HR Leads Scherzer, Tigers over KC

kc-royalsDETROIT (AP) — Miguel Cabrera hit his 40th home run and had an RBI single to help Max Scherzer become baseball’s first 18-game winner this season as the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 6-3 to win the five-game series.

The reigning Triple Crown winner became the third player since 1921 to have at least 40 homers and 120 RBIs while batting .350 or better through 116 games, joining Babe Ruth and Jimmie Foxx, according to STATS.

Scherzer (18-1) gave up two runs on five hits over eight innings. Scherzer and Roger Clemens are the pitchers since 1919 to have 18 wins in their first 19 decisions, STATS said. Clemens did it with the New York Yankees in 2001, when he finished 20-3.

Cabrera HR Lifts Tigers to 6-5 Win over Royals

kc-royalsDETROIT (AP) — A hobbled Miguel Cabrera hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the ninth inning, lifting the Detroit Tigers to a 6-5 win over Kansas City on Saturday night, hours after Royals infielder Miguel Tejada was suspended for at least the rest of this season for testing positive for an amphetamine.

Cabrera has been slowed by a strained lower abdomen, injured hip and banged-up left leg, but he was healthy enough to take a victory lap.

Joaquin Benoit (3-0) gave up only one walk in the ninth for the win.

Prince Fielder hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the seventh inning and made a good defensive play for the third out of the ninth.

Aaron Crow (7-4) threw five pitches, and Cabrera hit his 3-1 offering for an opposite field homer, his 39th.

Royals’ Tejada Suspended 105 Games for PED Use

Miguel-Tejada-Kansas-City-RKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Miguel Tejada has been suspended 105 games by Major League Baseball for violating its joint drug program, one of the longest suspensions ever handed down.

The 39-year-old Tejada had previously tested positive under the league’s amphetamine policy, so he was subject to a 25-game ban for a second test and an 80-game suspension for a third, both of which occurred while playing for the Kansas City Royals this season.

Tejada, who signed a one-year deal with the Royals last offseason, will begin serving the suspension while on the 60-day disabled list with a strained calf muscle. He would need to fulfill the remainder of the suspension next season before he’s eligible to play.

Tejada was hitting .288 with three homers and 20 RBIs in 53 games before getting hurt.

Royals Sweep Tigers in Day, Night Doubleheader

kc-royalsFriday’s major league schedule also included a doubleheader sweep by Kansas City in Detroit. Danny Duffy outpitched Justin Verlander by allowing just one hit in six shutout innings of Kansas City’s 2-1 triumph over the Tigers in the first game. Eric Hosmer homered to back Duffy, who had a no-hitter until Miguel Cabrera singled with two outs in the sixth.

James Shields limited the Tigers to three hits in seven innings of the Royals’ 3-0 shutout of the Tigers in the nightcap. Hosmer also went deep in the second game as the Royals pulled within 6 ½ games of the AL Central-leading Tigers.

Duffy Takes No-Hitter into 6th, Royals Beat Tigers

kc-royalsDETROIT (AP) — Danny Duffy took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and beat Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers 2-1 on a combined two-hitter Friday in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.

Eric Hosmer homered for the Royals.

Ramon Santiago hit a pinch hit home run for the Tigers.

Duffy (1-0), making his second big-league start this season after being called up from Triple-A Omaha Friday morning, held Detroit hitless for 5 2-3 innings, while walking three and hitting a batter. Miguel Cabrera got the first hit, a one-hop liner to third baseman Emilio Bonifacio’s right. Bonifacio dove for it, but the ball went off his glove and bounced toward left-center.

Greg Holland pitched the ninth for his 33rd save.

Verlander (12-9) allowed two runs on seven hits in eight innings.

Fielder Homers, Tigers Beat Royals 4-1

kc-royalsDETROIT (AP) — Prince Fielder homered for the first time in three weeks, hitting a two-run shot in the first inning to help the Detroit Tigers to a 4-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night.

Andy Dirks added two doubles and two singles for the AL Central-leading Tigers, who took the opener of this five-game series with third-place Kansas City. The Royals have lost three in a row after a 17-3 stretch that put them in contention for a postseason spot.

Detroit’s Anibal Sanchez (11-7) allowed a run and seven hits in 7 1-3 innings. Bruce Rondon finished the eighth, and Joaquin Benoit pitched a hitless ninth for his 16th save in 16 chances.

Jeremy Guthrie (12-9) allowed four runs and 13 hits in seven innings.

Royals Drop 2B Johnson to Make Room for Bonifacio

kc-royalsDETROIT (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have designated second baseman Elliot Johnson for assignment to make room for newly acquired infielder Emilio Bonifacio.

Toronto sent the 28-year-old Bonifacio to the Royals on Wednesday for cash or a player to be named. He was in the starting lineup Thursday night at third base.

Kansas City was in Detroit for a crucial five-game series against the AL Central-leading Tigers.

Johnson hit .179 in 79 games for the Royals this year.

Marlins Slip by Sloppy Royals for 5-2 Win

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Justin Ruggiano picked the scuffed-up ball off the carpet, smiled a toothy smile and proudly held it up for everyone to see in the visiting clubhouse at Kauffman Stadium.

A souvenir from his first career hit? Nope.

Just his first hit in a while.

Ruggiano snapped a franchise-worst 0-for-42 slump by hitting that ball for a single in the first inning Wednesday, and then added two more hits and drove in a run as the Miami Marlins beat the Kansas City Royals 5-2 to wrap up a winning three-game series.

“It became a mental issue. I wouldn’t wish that on anybody in the world,” said Ruggiano, whose last hit came on July 12. “I’m just glad it’s over with. Now I can get back to doing what I do.”

Ruggiano drove in the Marlins’ first run, but they still trailed 2-1 when Koyie Hill doubled off reliever Tim Collins (2-6) to start the seventh. Christian Yelich then hit a grounder toward third that utility man Elliot Johnson let through his legs to put runners on second and third.

Donovan Solano and Logan Morrison followed with RBI groundouts to give the Marlins the lead.

That was enough for the Marlins bullpen. Dan Jennings (2-3) got through the sixth, A.J. Ramos worked the seventh and eighth, and Steve Cishek handled the ninth for his 26th save.

Cishek struck out Alex Gordon with runners on first and second to end the game.

“This is a resilient group of guys,” Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. “They keep coming back and battling, and I think you saw some big hits by guys out there.”

Solano and Morrison each finished with a pair of RBIs for Miami.

“It’s always good to go out there and play well against teams that are making a push for a playoff spot,” Redmond said. “That’s a good feeling heading home.”

Indeed, the Royals were rolling when the series began. They’d won 17 of 20 after taking the opener to climb into playoff contention, but now limp off to play five games in four days against AL Central-leading Detroit with their first defeat in eight series.

Now, the Marlins have won two straight to finish off a long road trip.

The Royals, blanked 1-0 in 10 innings Tuesday night, got off to a good start when Eric Hosmer doubled in the first inning and eventually scored on a single by Salvador Perez.

The Royals failed to take advantage of the erratic Jacob Turner, though. The Marlins starter walked six without a strikeout in five-plus innings, but Kansas City could only squeeze out one more run against him on a groundout by David Lough in the fourth.

The Marlins got their first run when Ruggiano drove in Adeiney Hechavarria in the top half of the fourth. They were otherwise hamstrung by Royals starter Ervin Santana, who dodged eight hits and two walks over six innings to hand his bullpen the lead.

The Royals’ relievers — with little help from their defense — failed to hold on. Johnson’s error turned the game, Royals manager Ned Yost said, and eventually led to the go-ahead runs.

“In Elliot’s defense, it was cue-ball shot with a lot of English. It had a lot of spin on it, it hit and then boom, it stayed down,” Yost said. “It changed the whole complexion of the inning.”

For his part, Johnson refused to make any excuses.

“We’re in the middle of the hunt and they’re not going to tolerate that sort of stuff. It seems like an easy play,” Johnson said. “It wasn’t as easy as it seems, (but) still I should have made it. I’m playing in the big leagues and you’ve got to make those kinds of plays.”

Solano and Morrison tacked on run-scoring singles off Luke Hochevar in the ninth, and Cishek finished up for his 21st straight save, the third-best streak in the majors.

NOTES: The Royals acquired INF-OF Emilio Bonifacio from the Blue Jays for a player to be named or cash. They made space for him on the 40-man roster by transferring INF Miguel Tejada (right calf strain) to the 60-day DL. … Johnson went 0 for 3 for the Royals, extending his slump to 0 for 30. He doesn’t have a hit since July 6. … Turner is still winless in 12 career road starts. … The Marlins’ previous four wins this month had been shutouts.

Yelich Sends Marlins to 1-0 Win Over Royals in 10

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Christian Yelich singled home the go-ahead run with one out in the 10th inning Tuesday night and the Miami Marlins beat the Kansas City Royals 1-0 after a tidy matchup of contrasting starters.

Hard-throwing Marlins prodigy Jose Fernandez and wily Royals veteran Bruce Chen each lasted seven innings before handing the scoreless game over to their bullpens.

It continued to extra innings before Kansas City reliever Kelvin Herrera (4-6) brushed the jersey of the Marlins’ Jake Marisnick with a pitch in the 10th. Marisnick stole second and then scored on Yelich’s single through the right side of the infield, his third hit of the game.

Chad Qualls (3-1) earned the win for Miami, while Steve Cishek worked around a single in the bottom half of the 10th for his 25h save.
