Community Support Helps Make ‘2013 Railtown U.S.A. Collegiate Rodeo’ a Reality

MPCC College Rodeo 2013When the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association awarded Mid-Plains Community College with a collegiate rodeo competition earlier this summer it came as no surprise that individuals and businesses in the community were quick to offer their support and assistance.

“Right off the bat we had Don Kurre and his staff allowing us to team up with the increasingly popular Rail Fest event,” said Chuck Salestrom, Area Associate Vice President of Marketing, Public Information and Development. “We also had First National Bank-North Platte offering their sponsorship and we had the support of the Nebraskaland Days organization right from the start. When the North Platte/Lincoln County Convention & Visitor’s Bureau came onboard, we knew we were on solid ground.”

According to Salestrom, Gate Sponsors for the rodeo include Complete Eye Care Associates, Double D Trailer & AG Repair, Eagle Radio (Mix 97 and ESPN), Great Plains Regional Medical Center, KNOP NEWS 2, Kwik Stop, Mid-Nebraska Physical Therapy and Sports Center, the North Platte/Lincoln County Convention & Visitor’s Bureau, Nebraskaland Days, North Platte Telegraph, Snell Services and Wayne Dowhower Construction, Inc. Stepping up as Rodeo Partners are Hansen Construction, Pro Printing & Graphics and the Walmart Distribution Center.

The rodeo will take place Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20-21, at the Nebraskaland Days Wild West Arena in North Platte. It will begin at 7 p.m. on both nights.

General admission tickets for each night are $10 for adults and $7 for children. Tickets are available at the Nebraskaland Days office, 509 E. 4th St. in North Platte, or online at https://www.elevate.com/boxoffice/?cref=bd322850-b5ac-4bc3-b8cd-406ccad7fbac. Excitement Building for ‘2013 Railtown U.S.A. Collegiate Rodeo’

MPCC College Rodeo 2013The excitement is building as the “2013 Railtown U.S.A. Collegiate Rodeo” presented by First National Bank draws near.

The rodeo will take place during Rail Fest, Sept. 20-21, at the Nebraskaland Days Wild West Arena in North Platte. It will begin at 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday nights. Between 250-300 college cowboys and cowgirls representing 13 colleges in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s Great Plains Region are expected to compete.

“This is the first rodeo that Mid-Plains Community College has ever hosted and I’m expecting great things to be honest with you,” said MPCC Rodeo Club coach Dustin Elliott. “We’d like to show this region that we’re here.”

According to Elliott, Brookman & Hyland is the primary stock contractor for the rodeo.

“Brookman & Hyland are a PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) contractor and have provided stock to NFR (National Finals Rodeo) for years,” he said. “The horses and bulls we’re getting from them and from a few other subcontractors will help us put on a good show and offer quality stock to the competitors.”

Bullfighters Chad Connelly of Stapleton, Rowdy Moon of Sargent and Nick Tenbrick of Topeka, Kan., will be on hand to protect the cowboys and entertain the crowds. Professional Rodeo Announcer Jared Slagle of Farnam will bring an exciting and knowledgeable atmosphere to the arena.

“Rowdy was named the Nebraska State Rodeo Association’s (NSRA) 2013 Bullfighter of the Year and Jared was named the 2013 Announcer of the Year by both the NSRA and the Mid-States Rodeo Association, so we definitely have some top notch personnel on board,” noted Elliott.

MPCC Bull Rider Wins Event at University of Wisconsin-River Falls Rodeo

MPCC-Rodeo-TeamMid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team member Tyler Viers of Comstock won his first collegiate bull riding competition and also gave MPCC their first event win in a rodeo during the University of Wisconsin-River Falls rodeo Sept. 13-14.

Although Viers was bucked off in the short go, his score of 79 in the long round set the bar too high for the competition.

“I got a good bull and it was a pretty solid ride. It felt good to be the highest marked ride of the weekend,” he said.

“This was Tyler’s first college rodeo and he was the first guy out in the performance. He set the pace early,” said Dustin Elliott, MPCC Rodeo Team coach.

Elliott said he was pleased to see that the entire team was waiting in the arena to congratulate Tyler after his ride.

“There is a great team atmosphere and feeling of support from the other team members,” he said.

“Having the team behind you really helps your confidence level,” agreed Viers. “We do that for everybody on the team. It felt really great to have the team behind me.”

Viers is the son of Shane and Sandy Hickey and Jason and Cindy Viers. He began competing in junior rodeos when he was six, riding sheep and calves first and then gradually working up to riding bulls. While in high school at Sargent, he qualified for nationals three times and finished seventh in the nation in bull riding at the 2013 National High School Finals Rodeo Championship in Rock Springs, Wyo., in July.

“I’ve been on all different types of bulls and that really helps out because you never really know what you’re going to draw at these rodeos,” he said.

Although Viers admits his heart is in bull riding, he still places a high priority on his studies at North Platte Community College.

“My career goal is winning the world in bull riding, but in case that doesn’t work out I will have the schooling to fall back on,” he said.

Make your plans now to attend the ‘2013 Railtown U.S.A. Collegiate Rodeo’ during Rail Fest

MPCC-Rodeo-TeamPlans are being finalized for the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s  “2013 Railtown U.S.A. Collegiate Rodeo presented by First National Bank” that is scheduled to take place during Rail Fest,Sept. 20-21, at the Nebraskaland Days Wild West Arena in North Platte.

According to Chuck Salestrom, Mid-Plains Community College Area Associate Vice President of Marketing, Public Information and Development, although the college rodeo is associated with Rail Fest, it is not a component of the annual event.

“We are grateful that Don Kurre and his staff are allowing us to team up with the increasingly popular Rail Fest event. The activities of Rail Fest typically take place during the daytime hours of the weekend and are focused mainly on celebrating the bond between the Union Pacific Railroad, its employees, our community and the thousands of railroad enthusiasts who come to North Platte for the weekend,” he said. “The Rodeo will take place on Friday and Saturday nights and will hopefully provide an enjoyable evening of entertainment for those who may not have ever been close to a rodeo before. After all, North Platte is the ‘Birthplace of American Rodeo’ and since the Buffalo Bill Rodeo is such a world-class event we’re planning to model our Railtown USA College rodeo after it.”

Salestrom noted that the NIRA Great Plains Region awarded the collegiate rodeo competition to MPCC earlier this summer. Twelve men’s teams and nine women’s collegiate rodeo teams from Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota and Wisconsin compete in the Great Plains Region.

Salestrom said the college is appreciative of the Nebraskaland Days organization for their support of the Rodeo.

“This Rodeo just wouldn’t be possible without the help and support of the folks at Nebraskaland Days,” he said. “Among other things, they are allowing us use of the Wild West Arena and are also selling tickets for us though their office. We’re extremely grateful for all they are doing to help.”

Another organization that has stepped up to the plate is First National Bank-North Platte, Salestrom said.

“We’re excited and grateful to First National Bank for joining us in what is expected to be a great weekend of quality rodeo events,” he said.

The rodeo will begin at 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday nights. General admission tickets for each night are $10 for adults and $7 for children. Tickets are available at the Nebraskaland Days office, 509 E. 4th St. in North Platte, or online athttps://www.elevate.com/boxoffice/?cref=bd322850-b5ac-4bc3-b8cd-406ccad7fbac.
