Term Limits Set for Playoff Selection Committee

NCAA-Football-CollegeWASHINGTON (AP) — The College Football Playoff selection committee concluded its first meeting by setting staggered term limits for its 13 members.

The committee will set the matchups for the new postseason system that starts next season. The goal is to always have experienced members of the committee.

The terms for former Air Force Academy superintendent and retired Gen. Mike Gould, Southern California athletic director Pat Haden, former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne and former Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese will end February 2016.

Terms for Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez, West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck, former Mississippi quarterback Archie Manning and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will end in February 2017.

Terms for former NCAA vice president Tom Jernstedt, Arkansas athletic Jeff Long, Clemson athletic director Dan Radakovich, former USA Today college sports writer Steve Wieberg and former Notre Dame coach Tyrone Willingham expire in February 2018.

Judge: Challenges to NCAA Rules Can Move Forward

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsA federal judge has ruled that a lawsuit challenging the way the NCAA has used the images and likenesses of college athletes can move forward, but denied class action status to the plaintiffs that could have potentially put the NCAA on the hook for billions of dollars in damages.

The 24-page partial class certification ruling was handed down Friday by U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken. The case could still dramatically change the way the NCAA does business and its definition of amateurism, but Wilken ruled there was no way to determine which former players might have been harmed by the NCAA rules.

Former UCLA basketball star Ed O’Bannon is the lead plaintiff among 16 former college athletes in the long-running legal battle over how the NCAA made money off the images, likenesses and names of athletes.

The 2013 NCAA Final Four will be held at KeyArena in Seattle, Wash. The National Semifinals will be on Thursday, Dec. 19, with the National Championship on Saturday, Dec. 21.

Nebraska to Host NCAA Regional

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsLincoln – The University of Nebraska was awarded one of four regional host sites for the 2014 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, announced by the NCAA on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

The Huskers will host the four-team regional at Pinnacle Bank Arena in downtown Lincoln, March 29 through April 1.

“We’re excited that Lincoln was selected to host its first NCAA basketball tournament action since 1993,” Nebraska Executive Associate Athletic Director Marc Boehm said. “We believe it is an amazing opportunity to show off the Pinnacle Bank Arena and showcase Nebraska basketball and the city of Lincoln.”

Pinnacle Bank Arena will be the home of Nebraska men’s and women’s basketball for its inaugural season in 2013-14. The $179 million arena is located in the historic Haymarket district in downtown Lincoln, just steps away from the University of Nebraska campus.

With a capacity of more than 15,000, the arena has sold out for Husker men’s basketball for 2013-14 and season ticket sales for women’s basketball are up 50 percent from a year ago. Women’s basketball fans can still purchase season tickets now starting at just $80 for 20 games in Nebraska’s first season at the arena by visiting Huskers.com/Arena.

Nebraska women’s basketball season ticket holders will get the first opportunity to buy NCAA Regional tickets when they are made available for sale. Game dates, times and ticket prices have not yet been announced, but tickets for preliminary NCAA Tournament rounds are expected to be available for purchase no later than Nov. 16.

“It’s an exciting time to be a part of the Nebraska women’s basketball program, and the NCAA Regional announcement just keeps that building,” Coach Connie Yori said. “We’ve got a long way to go as a team before we can even think about the possibility of getting back to the Sweet 16 this year, but it is certainly a great opportunity for men’s and women’s basketball fans to have a chance to watch college basketball being played at a really high level at the end of March in Lincoln.”

Yori, who has led Nebraska to five NCAA Tournament bids in the past seven years, including a pair of NCAA Regional trips, was the 2013 Big Ten Coach of the Year and the 2010 Big 12 and National Coach of the Year.

“The city of Lincoln and the entire state of Nebraska have a reputation for coming out and supporting big-time events,” Yori said. “An NCAA women’s basketball regional to cap the first season at Pinnacle Bank Arena is certainly a big-time event. Sports fans of all kinds all across the state of Nebraska can start making their plans now.”

The last time the University of Nebraska served as a host for the an NCAA men’s or women’s basketball tournament came on March 17, 1993, when the Husker women defeated San Diego, 81-58, in the first round at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. It is the only game the Nebraska women’s basketball team has ever played on its home court in the NCAA Tournament.

In 1993, Nebraska featured Wade Trophy winner and first-team All-American Karen Jennings. In 2013-14, the Huskers feature senior Jordan Hooper, who was named one of 25 preseason candidates to the Wade Watch List, on Oct. 8. The 6-2 forward from Alliance, Neb., is a two-time honorable-mention All-American and a two-time first-team All-Big 12 selection. She will be joined by returning starters Emily Cady, Hailie Sample and Rachel Theriot in trying to power the Huskers back to the regional round in 2014.

Nebraska earned a trip to the NCAA Regional in Norfolk, Va., in 2013. The Huskers advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 by knocking off Chattanooga in the first round and home-standing Texas A&M at Reed Arena in the second round. The Huskers earned a No. 6 seed in last year’s tournament and finished the year with a 25-9 overall record that included a 12-4 Big Ten mark. It marked the second time in the past four seasons

The other three NCAA Regional sites are Louisville, Ky., Notre Dame, Ind., and Stanford, Calif. The 16 NCAA first- and second-round locations are Baylor, Duke, Iowa, Iowa State, Kentucky, LSU, Maryland, North Carolina, Penn State, Purdue, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Toledo, UConn, UCLA and Washington.

The NCAA Women’s Final Four will be held at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn., April 6-8.

Osborne Asked to Select College Football Playoff

Tom-Osborne-Nebraska-HuskerA person with knowledge of the process tells The Associated Press that former Notre Dame, Washington and Stanford coach Tyrone Willingham is expected to be on the College Football Playoff selection committee next year, and former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne has also been asked to be part of the panel.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Saturday because the 12-to-18 member panel being put together by conference commissioners has not been finalized.

ESPN first reported Willingham would be on the committee, and that Osborne would also be a member.

Osborne is one of the most successful coaches in college football history. He won 255 games and three national championships in 25 seasons leading Nebraska.

Willingham went from Stanford to Notre Dame to Washington as head coach from 1995-2005.

ADs Explore Full Cost of Attendance Options

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsThough college athletic directors won’t even discuss a pay for play model, they are exploring ways to compensate athletes for the full cost of attending college.

National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics President Mike Alden says the group wants athletes to receive the resources needed for a quality “student-athlete experience.”

NACDA and athletics officials for all three NCAA divisions say they are working together on the issue and met this week in Dallas. They discussed topics ranging from NCAA governance and enforcement to the disparity of interests and resources.

Alden says the groups been invited to meet with NCAA officials on Oct. 29. Purdue athletic director Morgan Burke, the head of the 1A Athletic Directors’ Association, says the NCAA convention in January will be an opportunity to enact change.

NCAA Won’t Budge on Paying College Athletes

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsMILWAUKEE (AP) — The structure of the NCAA could look very different by this time next year as members try to resolve the growing disparity between big-money schools and smaller institutions.

What won’t change, however, is the amateur status of the players who make college athletics a billion-dollar business.

NCAA President Mark Emmert said Monday that “very few members and, virtually no university president,” think it’s a good idea to turn students into paid employees. But the amount of money that has flooded college sports in recent years has created tensions among members, and Emmert hopes they can be resolved by next summer.

Emmert was the guest speaker at a forum at Marquette University.

NCAA Reverses Course on Marine Playing at MTSU

marine-corpsMURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — The NCAA has ruled that a Middle Tennessee football player who spent five years in the Marines will be allowed to compete this fall and that he will have four years of eligibility remaining.

It’s a reversal from the NCAA’s earlier decision to rule Steven Rhodes was ineligible because he played in a recreational league during his military service. School officials had said earlier Monday that they were working with NCAA officials to come up with a solution.

Late Monday afternoon, the NCAA issued a news release saying they wanted to thank Roberts for his service, wished him well and that member schools would continue to re-examine the competition rules.

Middle Tennessee President Sidney McPhee says it “exciting news” and thanked the NCAA for the review.
