INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Oliver Luck isn’t changing his position about paying college athletes for the use of their names, images or likenesses.

The NCAA’s new executive vice president of regulatory affairs believes it’s a fundamental right.

On Thursday, one day after accepting the post, the former West Virginia athletic director outlined a broad vision for what he hopes to do. His goals include creating better relationships with schools, providing more clarity and transparency about rules and enforcement decisions, and helping cope with a variety of lawsuits already in the system.

While Luck has said previously he believes athletes should be compensated for using their likenesses and reiterated the need to “do the right thing, Luck says he has not yet discussed that position with his new boss, NCAA President Mark Emmert.

Judge Rejects NCAA Concussions Deal

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsCHICAGO (AP) — A federal judge has rejected a proposed $75 million head injury settlement with the NCAA as too broad.

U.S. District Judge John Lee in Chicago issued a 21-page ruling Wednesday denying preliminary approval. He did say the deal could be altered to address his concerns, which include the scope of the proposal. At an October hearing, he raised similar concerns, saying, “The settlement, as it’s constituted, includes every athlete for all time.”

Under the settlement, NCAA would toughen return-to-play rules for players with concussions. It would also create a $70 million fund to test current and former athletes for brain trauma, and set aside $5 million for research.

NCAA Starts to Establish Governance Structure

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NCAA Board of Directors is asking school leaders to present a more diverse list of potential committee members as it starts reshaping its governance structure.

Board members were expected to vote Thursday on candidates for the new committee, called the Council. But the board was not satisfied with the diversity of the pool. With the Council scheduled to begin work in January, the NCAA says the board will conduct a final vote next month.

Chairman Nathan Hatch, the president at Wake Forest, says a more diverse Council will lead to “better decisions” for the NCAA.
