No. 22 Nebraska Women End Skid, 70-63 over Wisconsin

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Natalie Romeo scored a career-high 21 points and Tear’a Laudermill added 20 and No. 22 Nebraska ended a three-game losing streak with a 70-63 win over Wisconsin on Sunday.

All three of the losses came against ranked teams and after the Cornhuskers (18-7, 8-6 Big Ten) lost standout guard Rachel Theriot to an ankle injury suffered in practice.

Romeo, a freshman, making her fifth start and third straight in Theriot’s absence, hit 7 of 11 shots with three 3s.

Wisconsin (8-16, 4-10), which has lost seven of eight, got 16 points from Nichole Bauman and 15 from Jacki Gulczynski.

Nebraska led by 13 midway through the first half but the Badgers rallied to trail 33-32 at the break.

Wisconsin took an early lead in the second half but a 13-0, with Laudermill and Romeo combining for 11, put the Huskers back in control, 50-39 with 12:52 to play.

UNLV Rallies for 5-3 Win Over Huskers

husker baseballLas Vegas, Nev. – In a back-and-forth game on Saturday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium, the UNLV Rebels notched a 5-3 win over the Nebraska baseball team to even the three-game series between the two teams.

Christian Cox blasted a no-doubter down the right-field line for the Huskers’ first home run of the 2015 season and the first of his NU career in the seventh to put the Huskers ahead, 3-2, but Nebraska’s bullpen was unable to hold the lead. Cox nearly launched a homer in the second inning, but pulled the ball just right of the foul pole.

UNLV tied the game, 3-3, in the seventh and then took a 5-3 lead in the eighth on a two-out two-RBI single off the bat of Justin Jones. Joey Lauria earned the win for UNLV with 3.0 innings of relief, allowing one run on one hit.

Neither starter factored into the decision, with Nebraska’s Kyle Kubat giving up two runs on six hits over 5.1 innings, while UNLV’s Kenny Oakley last 6.0 innings and struck out six.

The Rebels snapped a 10-inning scoreless streak in the bottom of the second with the game’s first run when Austin Anderson drove in Nick Rodriguez with a two-out double. The 1-0 lead didn’t last long, as Nebraska evened the score in the third on a pair of UNLV miscues. Ryan Boldt reached on a two-out error and then moved to second base on a passed ball. Blake Headley made the Rebels pay with his first hit of the season, a two-out RBI single to center field.

Following the two-out double by Anderson in the second, Kubat retired six straight Rebels. Rodriguez snapped the streak with a single and Payton Squier followed with a single to start a rally for UNLV in the fourth, but Kubat shutdown the threat with a ground ball that left game tied, 1-1.

The Rebels put pressure on Kubat in the fifth with a leadoff single that was followed by a walk. Justin Jones then came through with a slow ground ball to the right side that moved both runners into scoring position, and also ended Kubat’s day. Jeff Chesnut took the mound and got two outs on two pitches, but a RBI groundout by Morgan Stotts put UNLV back in front, 2-1.

Once again, Nebraska’s offense responded and didn’t let UNLV keep the lead long. Boldt led off the sixth with a single to put NU’s leadoff hitter on base for the first time on the afternoon. With Boldt on second base following a pair of groundouts, Ben Miller was down to his last strike, but came through with a RBI single to right field that evened the game at 2-2.

After freshmen Garett King and Jake McSteen combined to keep the Rebels off the board in the bottom of the sixth, the Huskers took their first lead of the game with Cox’s one-out solo homerun in the seventh. Just like how the Huskers had answered twice earlier in the game, UNLV responded to NU’s lead with a run in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly that tied the game 3-3.

The Rebels continued to put pressure on the NU bullpen in the eighth, as they had the go-ahead run at third base with one out. Austin Christensen came in and got a fly out to put the Huskers one out away from getting out of the jam. Christensen then intentionally walked Joey Armstrong to setup a lefty-lefty matchup, but UNLV came out on top as Jones came through with a two-RBI single that proved to be the game winner.

Lauria set the Huskers down in order in the ninth to even the series.

The Huskers wrap-up their season-opening series against the Rebels tomorrow at 3:05 p.m. (CT), with sophomore Max Knutson scheduled to make his first career start. Due to Husker men’s basketball on 1400 AM, tomorrow’s baseball game will be carried on 105.3 FM in Lincoln.

Nebraska will be going for its first winning weekend to start the season since 2011 when NU started the year with a 3-1 record.

Legends Weekend Set for Feb. 22 vs. Iowa

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLincoln – The Nebraska basketball program will honor one of its most colorful personalities for its annual Legends Weekend game against Iowa on Sunday, Feb. 22. Tipoff for the matchup is at 2 p.m. at Pinnacle Bank Arena and will be carried on BTN and the Husker Sports Radio Network.

Legends Weekend has quickly become a popular event on the schedule, as nearly 50 former players have signed up for the 2015 event. The weekend’s activities include a team reception with the Husker coaches and staff on Saturday night, halftime recognition during the Iowa game as well as opportunities to watch the Huskers practice and interact with the current Husker team.

In addition, the Huskers have partnered with adidas on a special jersey to wear for the occasion. Details on the jersey will be announced next week.

This year’s event will celebrate the career of Jerry Bush, who guided the Husker basketball program from the 1954-55 season to the 1962-63 campaign. Bush was affectionately known as the “Big Bear of the Coliseum” for his colorful personality and uncanny ability to fashion upsets during his nine seasons at Nebraska.

Bush, who was chosen to the Nebraska Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991, guided Nebraska to several memorable wins in his tenure, including wins over No. 3 Kansas and No. 1 Kansas State in consecutive games during the 1957-58 season. The 43-41 win over the Wilt Chamberlain-led Kansas squad came on Jim Kubacki’s jumper with two seconds left, while the 55-48 triumph over a Bob Boozer-led Kansas State squad marked the Huskers’ first-ever win over a No. 1 team on the hardwood.

Bush coached All-American Herschell Turner, who earned first-team All-Big Eight honors in 1960 and became the first Husker to score 1,000 career points. In addition, Bush’s tenure also featured Rex Ekwall, who is still Nebraska’s rebounding leader, as he averaged 10.4 rebounds per game during his three seasons (1955-57) in the program. In all, nine of his former players have joined Bush in the Nebraska Basketball Hall of Fame.

An outstanding college player at St. John’s, Bush came to Nebraska from the University of Toledo, where he guided the Rockets to a 129-59 record in seven seasons, including the school’s first Mid-American Conference Championship in 1953-54.

Bush, who passed away at age 62 in 1976, is a member of the athletic hall of fame at both St. John’s and Toledo and will be represented by his daughters Karen Hoiberg & Jane Loewe as well as several family members who will be in town for the event.

Huskers Open 2015 with 2-0 Win at UNLV

husker baseballLas Vegas, Nev. – In front of a sellout crowd of 3,173 fans, the first sellout in Earl E. Wilson Stadium history, the Nebraska baseball team posted a 2-0 shutout win over the UNLV Rebels to open the 2015 season. With Nebraska’s pitching staff keep the Rebels’ offense off balance, while Ryan Boldt drove in the eventual game-winning run in the top of the fifth with a two-out single.

The opening-game shutout marked Nebraska’s first since 1995 when the Huskers beat Nebraska-Kearney 9-0.

After posting a 9-1 record last season when he was an unanimous All-Big Ten pick and third-team All-American, Chance Sinclair picked up his 10th career win on Friday night. The senior right hander got stronger as the game went on, as he retired eight of the final nine batters he faced. Sinclair gave NU 5.2 shutout innings, with seven strikeouts and no walks. It was Sinclair’s second-highest career strikeout total, trailing his 10-strikeout performance against Illinois last season.

Sophomore Jake Hohensee took over for Sinclair in the sixth and tossed 2.1 innings of no-hit relief behind a career-high five strikeouts. Senior Josh Roeder then took the mound in the ninth and picked up his 19th career save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Nebraska’s pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts and no walks on the night.

UNLV’s Zak Qualls started for the Rebels after missing the past two years and unfortunately only lasted five pitches before leaving the game with an arm injury. Ben Wright took over for the Rebels and tossed 5.0 innings, giving up one run on five hits and one walk. Bryan Bonnell kept UNLV in the game down the stretch, as he tossed 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.

The Huskers scored their first run of the 2015 season in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Blake Headley. After Tanner Lubach worked a walk to load the bases with one out, Headley lifted a pitch from Wright into deep right-center field that easily scored Austin Darby, who led off the game with a walk.

Holding a 1-0 lead and coming off a 1-2-3 inning headed into the bottom of the fourth, Sinclair got into a jam when he gave up a single and double to start the inning, which put runners on second and third with no out. The senior stayed calm and responded with two straight strikeouts along with a fly out to strand both runners. The NU offense fed off the momentum and added a run in the top of the fifth on a two-out single by Boldt that scored Luis Alvarado to put the Huskers ahead, 2-0.

Sinclair got the first two outs of the sixth before Edgar Montes ripped a single that snapped Sinclair’s streak of eight-straight batters retired. Hohensee took the mound and quickly ended the Rebel threat with a flyout. Hohensee returned for the seventh and struck out the side to keep Nebraska on top 2-0 through seven innings, before notching a perfect eighth inning with two more strikeouts. Roeder closed out the game with a flyout and back-to-back strikeouts.

The Huskers return to Earl E. Wilson Stadium tomorrow afternoon for game two of this weekend’s three-game series with the Rebels. Senior Kyle Kubat is scheduled to take the mound, with first-pitch scheduled for 4:05 p.m. (CT).

Huskers’ Pettway Hamstrung by Anxiety over Mother’s Cancer

Terran Petteway
Terran Petteway

Nebraska’s Terran Petteway says he has not been himself on the basketball court lately because he’s worried about his mother, who is undergoing treatment for cancer in Texas.

Petteway is the third-leading scorer in the Big Ten, but he’s been a target for fan criticism on social media for the way he has conducted himself during games.

He has sometimes reacted emotionally to officials’ foul calls, and he got into a shouting match with coach Tim Miles going into a timeout in Tuesday’s loss to Wisconsin.

Petteway said Friday at a news conference in Lincoln, Nebraska, that his behavior stemmed from his anxiety over his mother, Joetta Petteway, who lives in Galveston, Texas.

AP Source: Nebraska Aide Charlton Warren going to North Carolina

Charlton Warren (Photo from Facebook)
Charlton Warren (Photo from Facebook)

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska defensive backs coach Charlton Warren is leaving the Cornhuskers to take a similar job at North Carolina.

A person with knowledge of Warren’s hiring told The Associated Press on Friday that Warren would replace cornerbacks coach Dan Disch, who was fired. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the North Carolina has not made an announcement.

The departure of Warren is a blow for new Nebraska coach Mike Riley. Warren was the only assistant retained from Bo Pelini’s staff, and he was considered one of the Huskers’ best recruiters.

Riley said Warren told him he is taking a job at another university, but Riley did not name the school.

The statement below was made by the University of Nebraska football coach Mike Riley:

“Charlton Warren has informed me of his plans to take a similar coaching position at another university. This is an opportunity that Charlton feels is right for him and his family, and I respect his decision. We appreciate the valuable role Charlton has played in our transition to the University of Nebraska and wish him and his family nothing but the best. Charlton is an outstanding man and a bright, energetic football coach with a great future ahead of him in this profession.

“We will search for a talented teacher, coach and recruiter to fill the open position on our defensive staff. This is a high priority, but we will take the necessary time to find the individual who is the right fit to help lead the young men in the University of Nebraska football program.”

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Ally Disterhoft had 14 points and seven rebounds and No. 14 Iowa passed No. 22 Nebraska with a late surge to take a 69-61 victory on Thursday night.

Kali Peschel added 13 points and Bethany Doolittle 12 for the Hawkeyes (20-4, 11-2 Big Ten), who won their third straight game, swept Nebraska and got their first win in Lincoln since March 21, 2005.

Tear’a Laudermill scored 18 points and Brandi Jeffery 16 for Nebraska (17-7, 7-6). Emily Cady grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds. Nebraska lost its third straight, all to ranked conference rivals.

Nebraska led 37-28 at halftime but Iowa came back to take a lead with 7:55 to go. Jeffery scored six points in an 8-2 run to give the Cornhuskers a 56-54 advantage before Iowa began a game-ending 15-5 run.

Nebraska had 46 rebounds but also 22 turnovers. The Cornhuskers shot just 26.7 percent in the second half.
