Five Huskers to Attend U.S. National Team Tryouts

husker volleyLINCOLN, Neb. – Five members of the 2015 Nebraska volleyball team will participate at the USA Women’s Volleyball National Team Open Tryouts, set for Feb. 20-22 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Rising senior Alicia Ostrander and sophomore Kira Larson are the two veteran Huskers who will compete at the tryouts. Three newcomers will also try out: junior All-America transfer Briana Holman and incoming freshmen Mikaela Foecke and Kenzie Maloney.

The tryout will evaluate approximately 240 athletes from 92 colleges from across the country for spots on the U.S. Women’s National Team, the U.S. Collegiate National Team (formerly the U.S. Women’s A2 Program) and for the U.S. Women’s Junior National Team for athletes born in 1996 or 1997. For a list of athletes competing at the tryout, click here.

The Husker program is no stranger to the U.S. National Team. This past fall, former Huskers Kayla Banwarth, Jordan Larson-Burbach and Kelsey Robinson won a gold medal with Team USA at the  FIVB World Championship in Italy, the first major title in U.S. women’s volleyball history.

Among the current group of tryout participants, Holman was selected to the U.S. Collegiate National Team last March following her All-SEC freshman season at LSU. Larson made the 2012 women’s junior A2 team during her high school career at Fargo North. Foecke, a freshman-to-be from Fort Madison, Iowa, has already played for the U.S. Women’s Junior National Team, winning gold at the U-20 NORCECA Continental Championships. Maloney was a starter for the U.S. Youth National Team that won a silver medal at the Youth World Championships in 2013. The fifth Husker that will try out, Ostrander, played sparingly in her first two seasons as a Husker before becoming a key contributor in 2014, averaging 2.49 kills per set.

The U.S. Collegiate National Team will compete at the World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea (June 28-July 14), the Tour of China (June 12-26) and the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships (June 21-30).

For athletes born in 1996 or 1997, they will also be evaluated to earn a spot on the U.S. Women’s Junior National Team that will compete at the 2015 FIVB Volleyball Women’s U20 World Championship in Cyprus July 1-13 with a training block from June 14-29 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

Selections for the U.S. Collegiate National Teams will be made by the end of March, while selected athletes to the U.S. Women’s Junior National Team will be notified by April 31 with a public announcement expected by May 7.

Maryland Tabbed Big Ten Baseball Preseason Favorite, Nebraska Second

husker baseballRosemont, Ill. – Maryland was voted the preseason favorite to claim the 2015 Big Ten Baseball Championship as voted on by the conference coaches and announced on Wednesday. The coaches voted on the top six teams and also selected three student-athletes from their own squads to a Players to Watch list. The Terrapins were followed in the preseason poll by Nebraska in second place, No. 3 Illinois, Indiana in fourth place, No. 5 Michigan and Ohio State in sixth place.

Maryland is coming off its first Super Regional appearance in program history and returns All-American infielder Brandon Lowe and pitcher Mike Shawaryn. Lowe batted .348 last season and tied for the team lead in RBI (42). Shawaryn set the program record with 11 wins last season. Kevin Mooney, who notched a program record 13 saves in 2014, also returns for the Terrapins. Lowe, Mooney and Shawaryn were named Maryland’s Players to Watch.

Nebraska was picked to finish second after advancing to the NCAA Regional and finishing the season with a 41-21 record. The Huskers finished second in the Big Ten a year ago and return unanimous All-Big Ten first-team pitcher Chance Sinclair. Also comprising Nebraska’s Players to Watch are outfielder Ryan Boldt, a 2014 All-Big Ten Freshman Team selection, and senior pitcher Kyle Kubat, who earned a spot on the Big Ten All-Tournament Team in 2013 and 2014.

Illinois welcomes back 18 letterwinners from last season, including five starting pitchers. Among the staff and Players to Watch are junior left handers Kevin Duchene and Tyler Jay. Duchene went 4-1 with a Big Ten-best 1.80 ERA, 35 strikeouts and 55 innings pitched in nine starts last season. Jay earned second-team All-Mideast Region and All-Big Ten honors a year ago, while sophomore shortstop Adam Walton was named second-team All-Big Ten and was a member of the All-Freshman team.

The Hoosiers won the 2014 outright Big Ten title and Big Ten Tournament Championship. Indiana returns three starters that hit over .300 last year, including first-team All-Big Ten selection Scott Donley, who was named to the Players to Watch list, along with pitchers Scott Effross and Ryan Halstead. Effross led the conference with 32 appearances and recorded an ERA of 1.98. The Hoosiers welcome back Halstead after redshirting last season. As a junior, he struck out 48 batters in 43.2 innings of work.

Michigan is coming off a 30-win season in 2014, with infielder and relief pitcher Jacob Cronenworth, outfielder Jackson Glines and shortstop Travis Maezes recognized as Players to Watch. On the mound, Cronenworth recorded 12 saves and posted a 1.75 ERA last season. Glines was named a second-team All-Big Ten selection after batting .332 in 2014, while Maezes hit .302 with 18 doubles, four triples and three home runs.

Ohio State rounded out the preseason poll’s top six teams. The Buckeyes return 21 letterwinners from the 2014 campaign, including seven position players and four starting pitchers. Ohio State’s southpaw, Tanner Tully, was named the 2014 Big Ten Freshman of the Year and returns as a Player to Watch this season. Ronnie Dawson and Travis Lakins were also recognized as the Buckeyes’ Players to Watch.

The 2015 Big Ten baseball season is set to begin on Friday, Feb. 13.

Huskers Welcome Stanford for Senior Night

UNLNo. 10 Nebraska (11-1, 8-1 Big Ten) hosts its final home dual of the season on Friday when the Huskers face Stanford for Senior Night at the Devaney Center.

Eight seniors will be honored before the dual, which starts at 7 p.m. (CT): Nyle Bartling (HWT), Luis DeAnda (149), James Green (157), Spencer Johnson (197), Robert Kokesh (174), Ian Ousley (165), John Svoboda (157) and Brandon Wilbourn (165).

The dual will be streamed on BTN Plus, with a subscription required to view the matches. Scoring will be available on TrackWrestling.com and Twitter updates can be followed from @HuskerWrestling.

The Huskers lead the all-time series against the Cardinal, 3-0-0. Last season, NU picked up a 28-12 triumph on Nov. 30, 2013, in Stanford, Calif.

This season, both teams enter the matchup on hot streaks. The Huskers have won seven consecutive duals in dominating fashion since the start of the New Year. Stanford has won eight straight duals since a loss to Oregon State on Jan. 10.

In its most recent outing, Nebraska completed a weekend sweep on the road in Michigan to finish the Big Ten dual season with an 8-1 record, which marked the Huskers’ best mark since joining the conference in 2011.

Head Coach Mark Manning enters Friday’s dual with 198 victories at Nebraska. With a win, he can tie Tim Neumann for the most wins in school history. Following Friday’s dual, Nebraska heads East to face Drexel and Princeton on Saturday, Feb. 21.

It’s Fast Becoming a Lost Season for Cold-Shooting Nebraska

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Tim Miles is looking for answers to spark his offense after losses in four of the last five games.

The Cornhuskers (13-11, 5-7) are 10th in the 14-team Big Ten after Tuesday’s 65-55 loss to Wisconsin. The Huskers play at Purdue on Sunday.

Miles said the Huskers are an “incomplete team” that lacks a playmaking point guard and an inside scoring threat. Terran Petteway and Shavon Shields are among the top seven scorers in the Big Ten, but there isn’t much offensive support behind them.

Nebraska is last in scoring and 3-point shooting in Big Ten play. The Huskers have averaged 48.6 points and shot 20 percent on 3s in their five conference road games, all losses. Miles said the struggles have sapped his team’s confidence.

Dekker Scores 21, No. 5 Wisconsin Defeats Cornhuskers 65-55

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Sam Dekker matched his career high with 21 points, and No. 5 Wisconsin built a big lead early and then held off Nebraska’s late comeback bid for a 65-55 victory on Tuesday night.

The Badgers (22-2, 10-1 Big Ten) won their seventh straight game and extended their lead in the Big Ten to three games over the four teams tied for second place. The Cornhuskers (13-11, 5-7) lost for the fourth time in five games.

Wisconsin has its best 24-game record in program history and best 11-game record in Big Ten play since the 1913-14 squad went unbeaten.

Frank Kaminsky added 13 points and 12 rebounds and Bronson Koenig had 13 points for the Badgers.

Terran Petteway had 16 of his 21 points in the second half for Nebraska, and Shavon Shields finished with 12 points.

Huskers Return Home to Take on No. 14 Hawkeyes Thursday

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe No. 22 Nebraska women’s basketball team returns home after an extended East Coast road trip to take on No. 14 Iowa on Thursday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Tip-off between the Big Red (17-6, 7-5 Big Ten) and the Hawkeyes (19-4, 10-2 Big Ten) is set for 8 p.m. (CT), with single-game tickets available in advance at Huskers.com or by calling 1-800-8-BIG-RED. Tickets are also available the night of the game at the Pinnacle Bank Arena Box Office, beginning at 6 p.m.

The game will be televised live nationally by the Big Ten Network with Kevin Kugler and Stephanie White on the call.

Live radio coverage will be provided by the Husker Sports Network, with Jeff Griesch and Ben McLaughlin calling the action on stations across the network, including B107.3 FM in Lincoln, 93.3 FM in Omaha and 880 AM in Lexington.

Nebraska looks to get back on the winning track after suffering back-to-back losses at No. 21 Rutgers and No. 5 Maryland last week. Those two road losses and a 78-72 overtime loss at then-No. 20 Iowa on Jan. 26 marked the first time since joining the Big Ten in 2011-12 that the Huskers have lost three straight road games. It also marked the only time since joining the conference that the Big Red have played three straight top-25 teams on the road.

Last week’s losses came without starting All-Big Ten point guard Rachel Theriot, who missed both games with an ankle injury. The 6-0 junior from Middleburg Heights, Ohio, ranks sixth in the Big Ten in scoring (16.5 ppg), third in assists (5.2 apg) and leads the conference with 37.5 minutes per game. She could be a game-time decision on Thursday.

Tear’a Laudermill has led the Huskers in scoring in six straight games, averaging 18.3 points per contest over the stretch. On Sunday at Maryland, she became the third active Husker to reach the 1,000-point mark in her career, joining Theriot (1,023) and senior forward Emily Cady (1,335). Cady produced 19 points and 18 rebounds in the first meeting with the Hawkeyes this season.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (NCBWA) — Thirty-seven players have been named to the initial watch list for the 11th annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, the association announced Tuesday.

UC Irvine senior Sam Moore and UCLA senior David Berg – the national leaders in saves in 2014 and 2013, respectively – headline this year’s list of preseason nominees. Moore was a 2014 NCBWA first-team All-American and finalist for the 2014 Stopper of the Year Award after posting nation-best 23 saves and a 1.90 ERA in 42.2 innings, while Berg led the country with 24 saves en route to being named the 2013 Stopper of the Year and leading the Bruins to their first College World Series title.

Twenty-five of the 37 players on the watch list notched double-digit saves last season, including All-Americans Riley Ferrell (TCU) and Bryan Garcia (Miami). Thirteen players on the watch list also earned NCBWA preseason All-America honors: Ferrell, Garcia, Berg, Moore, Jacob Cronenworth (Michigan), Matt Ditman (Rice), Andres Gracia (Samford), Reilly Hovis (North Carolina), Skylar Hunter (The Citadel), Tyler Jay (Illinois), Brandon Koch (Dallas Baptist), Hayden Stone (Vanderbilt) and Travis Stout (Jacksonville State).

The Pac-12 and Big Ten Conferences led the way with five players each on this year’s watch list, while the Atlantic Coast, Big West and Southern Conferences each had three. Four conferences have two players apiece on the list: the Southeastern, Mountain West, Missouri Valley and Mid-American Conferences.

The 2015 Stopper of the Year watch list will be updated with a midseason release the week of April 20, including the national saves leaders. At the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists and released Wednesday, June 3, prior to start of NCAA Super Regional competition.

The NCBWA’s All-America Committee will select the winner, with this year’s recipient to be announced during the 2015 College World Series.

Texas hurler J. Brent Cox won the inaugural Stopper of the Year Award in 2005, with Don Czyz of Kansas claiming the honor in 2006 and Luke Prihoda of Sam Houston State winning it in 2007. Georgia’s Joshua Fields topped the field in 2008, San Diego State’s Addison Reed grabbed the honor in 2009 and Texas’ Chance Ruffin earned the honor in 2010. The Longhorns’ Corey Knebel won in 2011 with Southeastern Louisiana’s Stefan Lopez picking up the honor in 2012. UCLA’s Berg was crowned the winner in 2013, while Louisville’s Nick Burdi took home the 2014 honor.

The NCBWA, founded in 1962, presents the Dick Howser Trophy to the nation’s top player. It also selects All-America Teams for all Divisions, a Division I Freshman All-American team, Division I and III Players of the Week, Division I District Players of the Year and Division III Players of the Year.

Regional Matchups Highlight 2015 Houston College Classic Field

husker baseballHOUSTON, TX — The 15th annual Houston College Classic returns to Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros, from March 6-8 with regional matchups highlighting the three-day, six-team, nine-game tournament. The University of Houston will be making its yearly appearance in the Classic and will be joined by Baylor, Texas A&M and LSU, which is making its first appearance in the tournament. Nebraska, which is coached by former Astro Darin Erstad, and Hawaii, round out the tournament field.

The Houston College Classic once again boasts a strong lineup led by No. 2 LSU and No. 3 Houston, as ranked by Baseball America in their preseason poll. This marks the first time in tournament history that it will host two of the top three teams in the country. This event is regarded as one of the top collegiate baseball tournaments in the nation, as it continues to draw fans, top-ranked programs and scouts from every Major League organization on a yearly basis.

Last year’s Classic, which featured three teams ranked in the preseason top 25, eventually had all six participants make an NCAA Regional. Historically, the Houston College Classic has hosted the No. 1 team in preseason polls six times in tournament history and has hosted two eventual College World Series Champions. Several current Major League players have played in the Classic, including David Price, Michael Bourn, Gerrit Cole, Mike Leake and Anthony Rendon, to name a few.

For local fans or alumni, this year’s tournament represents the only time that Hawaii, LSU and Nebraska will play in the state of Texas this season, while the Houston College Classic will be the only stop in Houston for Baylor and Texas A&M in 2015.

“The Astros are extremely proud to host the Houston College Classic,” said Houston Astros President Reid Ryan. “It’s one of the best preseason college baseball tournaments in the country and represents a great kickoff to our 2015 season.”

Select student and adult daily tickets and three-day tournament passes are now available for purchase online at www.Astros.com/CollegeClassic. Tickets can also be purchased at the Minute Maid Park Box Office (during regular business hours), by calling Ticketmaster at 1-877-9ASTROS, or by visiting any of the Astros regular Houston-area Ticketmaster outlets.

Adult tickets purchased in advance are available for a $16 daily admission, as well as a $36 three-day tournament pass. Tickets for high school and college students, with a valid student ID, and children (ages 4-14) are available now for $10 daily and $24 for a tournament pass.

Season ticket holders (27-game packages and up) are offered a $10 daily ticket and a $24 tournament pass.
