Owners to Decide on 2018 Super Bowl Site

nfl_logo2011-medATLANTA (AP) — NFL owners will vote Tuesday on the site of the next Super Bowl, choosing between New Orleans, Indianapolis and Minneapolis.

Next year’s game is in Arizona, followed by the San Francisco Bay Area for the 50th Super Bowl in 2016. The 2017 game will be in Houston.

Owners also will discuss potentially expanding the playoffs by two teams, one in each conference. Commissioner Roger Goodell has said it’s still possible such a change to 14 playoff teams could happen this year if it is voted on and passed in Atlanta. It would require 24 yes votes out of 32.

More likely, 2015 would be the target date for expanded playoffs.

The workplace environment also will be a topic of conversation for the owners.

Some NFL Retirees Fault Concussion Deal

nfl_logo2011-medPHILADELPHIA (AP) — The proposed $765 million settlement of NFL concussion claims is under attack again, this time from retirees who say they would get nothing for their residual health problems.

Seven former players asked Monday to intervene in the court case in Philadelphia.

They say the plan doesn’t offer anything to men who can still work, but suffer from headaches, personality changes, and other side effects.

The group includes 2008 Pro Bowl player Sean Morey, now a sprint football coach at Princeton University.

The proposed $765 million agreement would give millions to men with Parkinson’s Disease and other serious neurological problems.

Senior U.S. District Judge Anita Brody fears the settlement is too small, but lawyers for both the NFL and the lead players’ group hope to convince her otherwise.

30 Top Prospects to Attend NFL Draft in New York

NFL Draft 2014NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL says 30 top prospects, including Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel and South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, will attend the draft next month in New York.

Among other players scheduled to appear at Radio City Music Hall include Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins and Buffalo linebacker Khalil Mack.

The prospects are expected to be selected in the first three rounds.

The first round will be Thursday, May 8, with rounds 2-3 the next day.

NFL Playoff Game to Air on Cable for 1st Time

nfl_logo2011-medNEW YORK (AP) — An NFL playoff game will air on cable for the first time this season.

The league said Tuesday that a wild-card matchup will be broadcast on ESPN in January. As with “Monday Night Football,” the game will be simulcast on local channels in the teams’ home markets.

In the NFL’s new TV deals that start with the 2014 season, NBC exchanged one of its wild-card matchups for one in the divisional round. It hasn’t been determined yet whether NBC will show an AFC or NFC game in January.

NFL, Lawyers at Work on $765M Concussion Deal

nfl_logo2011-medPHILADELPHIA (AP) — A judge overseeing thousands of NFL concussion-linked lawsuits says lawyers are still working to address her concerns about a proposed $765 million fund.

U.S. District Judge Anita Brody says she fears the fund may not be large enough to cover up to 20,000 retired players for 65 years.

Lawyers have given her more data to weigh since she rejected the deal on a preliminary basis in January.

The judge says in a Thursday order the parties are continuing to work with the court “to address the issues.” She also has clarified an order this week denying approval of the deal was not a new ruling. She says she was simply adding the January ruling to some case files.

The judge is expected to hold hearings in the case this year.

Judge Again Rejects Deal in NFL Concussion Cases

nfl_logo2011-medPHILADELPHIA (AP) — A federal judge in Philadelphia has again declined to approve deals for some of the retired players suing the NFL over concussions.

U.S. District Judge Anita Brody’s preliminary ruling Wednesday affects a batch of lawsuits involving lead plaintiff Kevin Turner, a former Philadelphia Eagle now battling Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Brody had issued a similar ruling in January in the lead case in the matter, which could ultimately cover up to 20,000 retired players.

The judge has asked lawyers for more details to support claims the proposed $765 million fund would last for 65 years. Young players with severe brain injuries would get up to $5 million under the deal, though most players would get far less.

Brody is expected to conduct hearings in the case later this year.

Future Pro Bowls to be Played in Arizona, Hawaii

nfl_logo2011-medNEW YORK (AP) — The next Pro Bowl will be played in Arizona at the site of the Super Bowl.

The NFL announced Wednesday that the game would return to Hawaii the following year. South Florida most recently hosted both games in 2010.

The game will remain a week before the Super Bowl as it has the last five years. The new format introduced after last season, which scrapped the AFC vs. NFC matchup, will be retained.

The Pro Bowl after this coming season will take place Jan. 25, 2015, at University of Phoenix Stadium. A year later, the game will be held Jan. 31, 2016, at Aloha Stadium.

NFL, Players Meet about Workplace Atmosphere

nfl_logo2011-medNEW YORK (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and union leader DeMaurice Smith met Tuesday to discuss the league’s workplace environment.

In light of the bullying scandal last season involving the Dolphins’ Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito, both sides want to improve the working atmosphere. Goodell last month targeted this meeting as a chance to create open lines of discussion about the issue.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello says the meeting brought “productive discussions.” NFL Players Association spokesman George Atallah called it “positive.”

Also involved Tuesday were new NFLPA President Eric Winston and new NFL director of football operations Troy Vincent.

Team Offseason Meetings Begin Monday

nfl_logo2011-medNEW YORK (AP) — The seven NFL teams with new head coaches can begin the first phase of offseason workouts on Monday.

Those workouts for the Redskins, Titans, Buccaneers, Browns, Lions, Texans and Vikings will be limited to strength and conditioning and physical rehab sessions.

Each of those clubs can conduct a voluntary minicamp, with the first of those scheduled for April 22-24 in Detroit and Tampa. Cleveland, Minnesota, Tennessee and Washington will hold their voluntary minicamps the following week, while Houston will go May 6-8.

All other teams can begin their opening phase of workouts April 21.

Goodell: Expanded Playoffs in 2014 Possible

nfl_logo2011-medORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says it’s possible the playoffs could expand next season.

Goodell said Wednesday at the spring meetings that “it’s not out of the question.” He says he “wouldn’t rule it out, but I wouldn’t say that’s the direction we’re heading.”

The owners discussed adding two playoff teams to the current 12, one in each conference. The topic is certain to come up when Goodell meets with the players union April 8, and again at the owners’ May meeting in Atlanta.

Goodell adds that there was a “tremendous amount of interest in this, possibly even to the point of support.” He believes it will make the late-season division and wild-card races even more compelling.

Adding two postseason games also would increase TV revenues.
