NPCC Knights Defeat Southeast

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Knights defeated by the Southeast Community College Storm 72-44 Friday Night at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

The win improved the Knights record to 21-7 and broke a three game losing streak. The Knights are undefeated in the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference with a 5-0 record in conference play.

The Storm started out the scoring on a three-pointer by John Swift to take a 3-0 lead.  It would be the only lead for the Storm for the rest of the night.  Marco Pascolo hit a three pointer and CJ Polk made a field goal and free throw to give the Knights a 6-3 lead.

The Knights led by as much as 23 in the first half with 2:08 to play 38-15.  The Knights held a 40-20 halftime lead.

In the second half it was more of the same.  The Knights went on a 20-6 run to lead 60-26 with 11:30 to play.  The Knights maintained a 30 point or more lead throughout the rest of the game until the last minute to take a 28 point victory.

The Knights were had a balanced scoring attack led by CJ Polk and Tyree Peter with 12 points each.  Matt Thomas and Riley Rice added 11 points.  Rice had a double-double by adding 10 rebounds.  Thomas and Cameron Williams each dished out 3 assists.

“We played well as a team tonight” Knights assistant coach Ryan Glenney said.

The Storm dropped to 11-17 on the season.  They were led in scoring by Josh Stroud.  Alex Davis grabbed 6 rebounds.

The Knights travel to Sterling, Colorado to play Northeastern Junior College on Saturday, Feb 21.  The winner of the game will control their own destiny in obtaining the number one seed for the South sub-region of the National Junior College Athletic Association Region IX.   Coming into tonight the Knights have a 10-4 sub-region record and trailed Northeastern who had an 11-3 record.  Northeastern was upset at home by Eastern Wyoming 76-73, giving them four losses in the sub-region.  Tip-off is at 8:30 p.m. CST and may be viewed via the Northeastern Junior College live stream on www.njcaatv.com .

NPCC Lady Knights Lose to Southeast

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Lady Knights were defeated by the Southeast Community College Lady Storm 58-44 Friday night at McDonald-Belton Gymnasium on Girl Scout, Elementary, and Roller Derby Nights.

The win for Southeast gives the Lady Storm the National Junior College Athletic Association Region IX Division II regular season number one seed.  They will host the championship game against the winner of the Lady Knights versus Central Community College which will be held tentatively on Thursday, Feb 26.

The Lady Knights jumped out to a 9-1 lead and led 11-6 with just over 12 minutes to play.  The Lady Storm outscored the Lady Knights 14-9 to take a 20-19 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Lady Storm never trailed.  They started out the half on a 10-1 run to lead 30-20 with 15 minutes to play.  The closest the Lady Knights came the rest of the second half was seven after a free throw by Clara Vinton.

The Lady Knights fall to 13-12 on the season, while the Lady Storm improve to 20-6.

The Lady Knights were led in scoring by April Stull with 12 points.  Clara Vinton and Aliyah Brown each added 10 points.

The Lady Storm were led by Dionne Martin with 15 points.  Breanna Grant had 12 points as the only other player to score in double figures.

The Lady Knights take to the road on Saturday Feb. 21 to play Northeastern Junior College.  Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. CST.  The game can be seen on www.njcaatv.com.

NPCC Knights Softball Weekend Games Canceled

Knights-SoftballThe North Platte Community College Knights softball team’s weekend games have been canceled.

The Knights were to travel to Borger, Texas to participate in the Frank Phillips Tournament on Friday and Saturday, but the tournament was canceled due to impending inclement weather in that area.  Forecasts are predicting an 80 percent chance of rain and snow.  The Knights were to play against Dodge City Community College, Barton Community College and Frank Phillips College twice in the tournament.

Also the games Sunday at Garden City Community College are canceled also because of predicted low temperatures and inclement weather.  The high on Sunday is expected to be in the mid-teens.

The Knights are in action next when they do travel to Borger, Texas to play Frank Phillips in doubleheaders on Feb. 28 and March 1.

NPCC Basketball Teams To Travel to Northeastern Junior College

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Lady Knights and Knights will travel to Sterling, Colorado to play the Northeastern Junior College Plainsmen at the Bank of Colorado Events Center on Saturday, Feb. 22.

The Lady Knights defeated the Plainswomen at North Platte on Dec 9 by a score of 63-55.

The Lady Knights are 13-11 on the season.  They are led in scoring by April Stull, who is averaging 15.7 points per game.  Stull is in 7th place on the Lady Knights all-time scoring list with 705 points.  Aliyah Brown is the other Lady Knight averaging in double figures is averaging 10.6 points per game.

The Plainswomen are 22-4 on the season.  They have won 10 of their last 12 games.  They have five players averaging in double figures led by Arianne Sheka, who is averaging 13.0 points per game. She is followed by Brooke Blair, who is averaging 11.3 points per game.. Danielle Rinaldo, 10.8 points per game, Jau’Nae Peevy, 10.2 points per game and Raynisha Washington, 10.1 points per game are the other Plainswomen in double figures.

Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. CST.

The men’s game is an important game in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region IX South Sub-region.  The Plainsmen are leading the sub-region with an 11-3 record in the sub-region. The Knights are in second with a 10-4 record in sub-region play.  Both teams will host home games for the first round of the Region IX tournament beginning on Feb 28.  North Platte could still be the number one seed by defeating the Plainsmen and defeating McCook Community College on Feb 24.

The Knights are 20-7 overall and are led in scoring by Cameron Williams.  Williams is averaging 21.7 points per game.  The other two Knights to average in double figures are Marco Pascolo, who is averaging 11.1 points per game and Shyquinn Dix is averaging 10.1 points per game.  Freshman Matt Thomas is averaging 9.5 points a game. Thomas is coming off a 24 point performance against Laramie County Community College on Wednesday night.

The Plainsmen are 20-8 on the season.  They have three players averaging in double figures led by Shikel Blake. Blake is averaging 16.1 points per game.  Robert Jones is averaging 10.8 points per game andJames Dumes is averaging 10.2 points per game.

Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m. CST.

NPCC Offers Free Admission to Basketball Game

npcc-knightsIt’s on the house! Local elementary students and their families will be admitted for free to the North Platte Community College Knights basketball gameFriday, Feb. 20.

That’s as long as the students are wearing shirts representing their schools. Admission will also be waived for Girl Scouts in uniform and their families.

The Knights will be up against Southeast Community College in a doubleheader. The women’s game will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the men’s game will start at7:30 p.m. Both will be in the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium on NPCC’s south campus.

The Heartland Hellcats roller derby team will sign autographs between the games.

NPCC Knights Lose to Laramie County

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Knights lost to the Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles on Wednesday night 86-67 in a National Junior College Athletic Association Region IX South Sub Region game.

The Knights started the game out with a 10-3 lead.  The Golden Eagles rallied to take a nine point halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles shot well from the floor shooting 61.4 percent from the field compared to the Knights shooting 43.3 percent.

The Knights, now 20-7 and 10-4 in sub-region play were led in scoring by Matt Thomas with 24 points.  Thomas shot six for seven behind the three-point line.  Marco Pascolo added 12 points and CJ Polk ended with 11 points.

The Golden Eagles, who are 20-9 on the season and 10-5 in the sub-region were led in scoring by Kamari Robinson who had a game high 26 points.  Robinson was perfect from the floor shooting 11 for 11.  Darian Fernandez scored 19 points and Spencer Svejcar added 14 points for the Golden Eagles.

The loss drops the Knights into second place in the South sub-region behind Northeastern Junior College.

The Knights return to the court on Friday Feb 20 when they host Southeast Community College.  The game has been designated as “elementary night.”  All elementary students who wear their school’s t-shirt along with their family will be admitted free.    It is also “Girl Scout Night”.  All girl scouts that are in uniform and their families will be admitted free.  The game may be seen on www.coachesaid.com .   Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. CST.

NPCC Basketball Teams to Host Southeast

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Knights and Lady Knights basketball teams will be hosting the Southeast Community College Storm on Friday, Feb. 20 at McDonald – Belton Gymnasium on the south campus.

The night is full of activity.  Besides the basketball games, the night has been designated Elementary Night. Any child wearing their school t-shirt and their families will be admitted into the game free.  Also, because of the cancellation of a previous women’s game against York College Junior Varsity, it will also be “Girl Scout Night”.  Any scout in uniform and their families will be admitted free.  Also the scouts in uniform will receive a free ticket for popcorn at the concession stand.  This is for Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors or Ambassadors.  In addition, the Hometown Cats, a local roller derby team, will be on hand to sign autographs between the women’s and men’s games.  They will also be giving away two tickets for their March roller event.

The women’s game will be a crucial game in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region IX Division II standings.  Currently the Lady Storm are leading Division II with a 3-0 record in the division.  The Lady Knights are in second with a 2-1 record.  Their only loss was to the Lady Storm on Jan 17 at Beatrice 71-57.  If the Lady Knights beat the Lady Storm by 15 or more points, the Lady Knights will have a first game bye and will host the Region IX Division II Championship game on March 2 against the winner on Feb. 25 between Southeast and Central.  If the Lady Knights lose or do not win by 15 or more points, they will host Central Community College at McDonald – Belton Gymnasium on Feb 25.

The Lady Knights are 13-11 on the season.  They are led in scoring by sophomore April Stull from Sweeny, Texas, averaging 15.7 points per game.  Stull is currently seventh on the Lady Knights all-time scoring list with 705 points.  Sophomore Aliyah Brown from Omaha Burke is the only other Lady Knight averaging in double-figures with 10.6 points per game.  Brown is coming off a career high 24 points against Doane College Junior Varsity.  Stull leads the Lady Knights in rebounding with 8.6 rebounds per game.

The Lady Storm are 19-6 on the season and are led in scoring by Breanna Grant. Grant is averaging 14.5 points per game.  Veshae Wilkinson is the only other Lady Storm averaging in double figures with 10.2 points per game.  Wilkinson also leads Southeast in rebounding with 6.9 rebounds per game.

The men’s game is a Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference game.  It does not count in the Region IX standings.

The Knights are 20-6 overall and 4-0 in the conference.  The Knights are led by Cameron Williams in scoring with 22.4 points per game.  The sophomore from Omaha South High School is currently leading Region IX South sub-region in scoring and is 11th in the nation.  Williams is also 14th on the Knights all-time scoring list with 1022 points in his career.  Sophomore Marco Pascolo is second on the Knights in scoring with 11.1 points per game.  Pascolo also leads the team in rebounding with 7.9 rebounds per game.  Freshman Shyquinn Dix is the only other Knight to average in double-figures with 10.4 points per game.

The Storm are 11-17 on the season and 1-4 in conference play.  They are led in scoring by John Swift with 10.6 points per game and Altez Davis with 10.5 points per game.  Snyder Cenecharles is averaging 10.1 points per game.  Davis leads the Storm in rebounding with 7.3 rebounds per game.

NPCC Knights Travel to Laramie County

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Knights take to the road on Wednesday, Feb. 18 to play the Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles at the LCCC Gymnasium in Cheyenne, Wyo.  The matchup is an important game in the standings of the National Junior College Athletic Association Region IX South Sub-Region.

The Knights look to break their two game losing streak.  The Knights, 20-6 overall and 10-3 in sub-region play are currently tied for first with Northeastern Junior College in the South Sub-Region.  The Golden Eagles are 19-9 overall and 9-5 in the sub-region.  They are currently third in the South Sub-Region. A win for the Knights would clinch at least a number two seed in the upcoming Region IX tournament.

The Knights are led in scoring by sophomore Cameron Williams.  Williams is averaging 22.4 points per game.  He is leading the Region IX –South in scoring and is 11th in the nation.  Williams scored his 1000th career point in the loss to Eastern Wyoming and is currently 14th on the Knights all-time scoring list.

Other Knights scoring in double figures are Marco Pascolo, 11.1 points per game and Shyquinn Dix, 10.4 points per game. Pascolo leads the Knights in rebounding with 7.9 rebounds per game.

The Golden Eagles are led in scoring by Darien Fernandez with 16.1 points per game.  Fernandez is followed by Spencer Svejcar at 15.8 points per game.  Two other Golden Eagles are averaging in double figures.  They are Kamari Robinson, averaging 13.8 points per game and Alexis Dargenton, averaging 12.4 points per game.  Dargenton also leads the Golden Eagles in rebounding with 7.6 rebounds per game.

Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. CST.   The game will be live streamed through Laramie County Community College at www.njcaatv.com .

NPCC Lady Knights Basketball Defeats Doane College JV

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Lady Knights defeated the Doane College Junior Varsity Lady Tigers Sunday afternoon 65-50.  The game was a make-up game that was originally scheduled for Feb. 1.

The Lady Knights led at halftime 28-26 but outscored the Lady Tigers in the second half 37-24.

The Lady Knights were led in scoring by Aliyah Brown who scored  a career-high 24 points. The only other Lady Knight to score in double figures was April Stull with 13 points.

The Lady Tigers were led in scoring by Claire Phillips with 14 points and Karolyn Cahill with 13 points.

Lady Knight head coach Richard Thurin said: “Overall we played a good game.  We had a lot of help off the bench.  Clara Vinton played well with eight points.  Doane pulled four players off of the varsity to play against us.”

Thurin also noted the play of Brown and her 24 points.

The Lady Knights who are now 13-11 on the season will be in action on Friday, February 20 against Region IX Division II opponent Southeast Community College.  Southeast is currently leading Division II in Region IX with a 3-0 record.  The Lady Knights are 2-1.  The Lady Knights need to win  by 15 to claim the regular season Region IX championship and gain a bye in the Region IX Division II Tournament. The game will be live streamed on www.coachesaid.com. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. CST.

The game is designated as “Girl Scout Night” and “Elementary Night.”

NPCC Knights Softball Splits Doubleheader with Murray State College

Knights-SoftballThe North Platte Community College Knights Softball Team spit a doubleheader with the Murray State College Lady Aggies on Saturday losing the first game 6-4 and winning the second game in convincing fashion 14-0 in five innings.  The win was the Knights first win of the season and puts the season record at one win and seven losses.

In game one, the Knights jumped out to an early two to nothing lead on runs by Caroline Motis and Shannon Lieber.  In the second inning, the Knights added one more run when Sara  Villalobos doubled to left field driving in Motis for her second run scored for the game.

The Lady Aggies scored one run in each of their half of the third and fourth inning with runs by Haley Dixson and Kenzi Clapp.  The Lady Aggies took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Rachel Noble hit a two-run home run scoring Aubrey Wooden.

The Knights tied it up in the sixth at four when Motis scored her third run of the game.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh when Bryanne Knox singled to left field and then scored on Wooden’s walk-off home run.

The Knights were led offensively by Caroline Motis, who reached base three times and scored three runs.  Baileigh Oleson pitched six innings, allowed four earned runs on eight hits, two home runs and striking out six to take the loss.

Murray State were led by  Wooden, who had three hits, including the game winning home run. Jordan Dabney was the starting pitcher for the Lady Aggies. Dabney pitched 5.2 innings allowing six hits and two earned runs. Dabney struck out six. Kaitie Miller pitched 1.1 innings of relief to get the win.

The second game was all Knights.  Brittney Odum hit a three-run home run in the first inning scoring Caroline Motis and Audrie Conner.

The big inning came in the fourth when the Knights scored eight runs. Knights scored  on a two-run single by Shelby Clark, a two-run double by Tara Crouch, a two-run single by Jessica Jarvis, an RBI single by Caroline Motis, and an RBI single by Shannon Lieber.

The Aggies only managed to get one hit off of Knights starter Shannon Lieber.  Lieber pitched five innings  and struck out four.

Andrea Quiroga, Jarvis and Motis each had two hits for the Knights.  Jarvis had four runs batted in. Motis also had a stolen base.

The Knights are in action next when they travel to Borger, TX to participate in the Frank Phillips Tournament on Feb. 20 – 21.
