NPCC Basketball Teams to Host Eastern Wyoming on Boy Scout Night

NPCC Knights Basketball Boy Scout NightThe North Platte Community College Knights and Lady Knights will be hosting the Eastern Wyoming College Lancers in a basketball doubleheader on Saturday January 10 at the McDonald – Belton Gymnasium.

The games have been designated as Boy Scout Night.  Area Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Explorers and their families are invited to a free evening of basketball action at North Platte Community College All Scouts in uniform will also be treated to a free bag of popcorn. They will have the opportunity to meet the NPCC Knights men’s basketball team at an autograph session following the men’s game.

Eastern Wyoming Lady Lancers are 9-5 on the season and have four players scoring in double figures.  Joanna Perez leads the Lady Lancers in scoring with 16.0 points per game.  Kara Babola is next in scoring with a 15.2 points per game average.  The other two Lady Lancers in double figures are Arriel Fort, averaging 10.5 points per game, and Asia Roper, averaging 10.4 a game.

The Lady Knights, 8-5 on the season, are led by April Stull, who is averaging 16.8 points per game and 9.2 rebounds per game.  Aliyah Brown is averaging just under ten with 9.7 points per game.

Stull is currently in 21st place on the Lady Knights scoring list.  She needs two points to pass Mindy Humphrey to move into the Top 20

In the men’s game, which is a Region IX south sub-region matchup, the Lancers are 6-8 overall and 1-2 in sub-region play.  The Lancers are led by Kalil Potts, who is averaging 15.4 points per game.  Three other Lancers are scoring in double figures:  Arthur Santana, who is averaging 11.7 points per game; Rich Williams, who is averaging 11.2 points per game; and Malcom Glover, who averaging 10.7 points per game.  Jeff Uju leads the Lancers in rebounding with 6.6 boards a game

The Knights are 10-4 overall and 3-1 in sub-region play are led by Cameron Williams with 23.1 points per game.  Williams is ninth in the nation in scoring and leads Region IX.

Other Knights in double figures are Marco Pascolo, averaging 11.2 points a game, and Shyquinn Dix, averaging 11.1 points per game.  Pascolo leads the Knights in rebounding with 8.4 rebounds per game.

The Lady Knights game will begin at 2:00 p.m. CST and the Knights game will follow at 4:00 p.m. CST.

NPCC Knights Host Western Nebraska in South Sub-Region Contest

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Knights basketball team will host the Western Nebraska Community College Cougars on Friday, January 9 at McDonald – Belton Gymnasium.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CST.

The Knights enter the contest with a 10-4 record, 3-1 in the Region IX south sub-region, while the Cougars are 6-9 and 2-1 in the sub-region.

The Cougars are led in scoring by Preston Christensen with a 16.9 average. Two other Cougars are averaging in double figures: Diante Mitchell who is averaging 14.7 points per game and Damion Rashford, who is averaging 13.5 points per game.  Julio Guity leads the Cougars in rebounding with 4.6 boards per game.

North Platte has three players averaging in double figures.  Cameron Williams leads the way with 23.2 points per game.  Marco Pascolo is averaging 11.2 points per game and Shyquinn Dix is averaging 11.1 points per game.

Williams, currently 9th in the country in scoring, leads the region in scoring and is 36th on the Knights all-time scoring list and needs 6 points to pass Kent Brown for 35thplace.

NPCC Lady Knights Host Colorado Christian JV

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team will host the Colorado Christian University Junior Varsity Lady Cougars on Friday, January 9 at McDonald – Belton Gymnasium.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CST.

The Lady Knights enter the contest with an 8-5 record, while the Lady Cougars are 1-7.

The Lady Cougars are led by Cassaundra Rindels and Rachel Nakamura.

North Platte is led by sophomore April Stull.  Stull is averaging 16.8 points per game and 9.2 rebounds per game.  Stull is leading Region IX Division II in both categories.

Aliyah Brown is averaging 9.7 points per game and 2.1 assists per game.

NPCC Knights Fall to Northwest Kansas

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Knights were defeated by the Northwest Kansas Technical College Mavericks 74-68 on Tuesday night.

The loss drops the Knights to 10-4 on the season.  The Mavericks improve to 10-7.

The Mavericks jumped out to a 6-0 lead on consecutive three pointers by Broderick Robinson and James Sylvester. The Knights tied up the score at 16 with 8:13 to go in the first half.  The Mavericks went on a 13- 4 run to take their biggest lead of the game 29-20.  The Knights scored the last five points to make the score at halftime 29-25.

The Knights in the first half shot 33. 3 percent from the floor and 25 percent from behind the 3-point line.

The Mavericks led throughout the second half and led by eight, 40-32 with 17:32 left. The Knights rallied to tie the score at 55 with 6:42 left and took their first lead, 56-55 on a Shyquinn Dix free throw. The Mavericks took back the lead on a Broderick Robinson 3-pointer to make it 58-56 and never trailed again.

The Mavericks out-rebounded the Knights 44-31.  R.J. June led the Mavericks with eight, while CJ Polk led the Knights with five.

The Knights were led in scoring by Cameron Williams, who finished with a game high 23.  The only other Knight to finish in double figures was Shyquinn Dix with 12 points.

The Mavericks had two players in double figures.  Broderick Robinson had 22 points and James Sylvester finished with 18.

The Knights return home to play Western Nebraska Community College in a Region IX sub-region game on Friday. Tip- off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.  The game may be seen on the internet at www.coachesaid.com.

Former Knight Montalvo, Texas State Upsets Georgia State 77-74 in 2OT

ATLANTA (AP) — Emani Gant scored 11 of his 17 points in two overtime periods as Texas State upset Georgia State77-74 on Monday night.

Gant nailed a 3-point jumper as time expired in the first overtime to tie the game at 69. He made two straight jump shots in the second extra period and Kavin Gilder-Tilbury sank three free throws as the Bobcats ended Georgia State’s 18-game home court winning streak.

The Panthers, picked to win the Sun Belt Conference, held a 55-51 lead with 1:17 left in regulation. Ethan Montalvo and D.J. Brown nailed consecutive treys for the lead with 17 seconds remaining. Ryan Harrow drove for a layup to tie at 57 and send it to overtime.

Cameron Naylor had a career-high 18 points, Brown added 12 and Gilder-Tilbury and Montalvo had 11 apiece for Texas State (8-4, 2-1 Sun Belt).

Harrow had 29 points for Georgia State (9-5, 2-1).

Boy Scouts Basketball at NPCC

BasketballArea Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Explorers and their families are invited to a free evening of basketball action at North Platte Community College. A doubleheader is planned for Saturday in the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium on south campus. The women’s game starts at  2 p.m. and the men’s game begins at 4 p.m. All Scouts in uniform will also be treated to a free bag of popcorn. They will have the opportunity to meet the NPCC Knights men’s basketball team at an autograph session following the men’s game.

Kennedy Selected to All-Nebraska Team

North Platte Community College Lady Knight volleyball player Samantha Kennedy was recently named to the All-Nebraska Junior College volleyball first team presented by the Omaha World Herald.  This is the second year that Kennedy was selected.

Kennedy led the Lady Knights in kills with 442 kills and a kill efficiency of 0.306.  The 442 kills in a season is tied for 6th place in the history of the Lady Knights volleyball program. The 0.306 kill efficiency also places her 6th in the kill efficiency category.

Kennedy, a Sutherland, Nebraska native, finished her career with the Lady Knights with 828 kills which places her in 5th place in school history and a 0.298 kill efficiency which is 4th best in school history.

Former Lady Knights volleyball coach Sally Thalken said, “Sam is very deserving to be on this team.  She led our team in many categories and was much of the time our ‘go to person.’”

Other Lady Knights named honorable mention to the All-Nebraska team were sophomores Joli Hopping, Samantha Byrn, and Erika Goodwin.  Freshman Valerie Most also was named Honorable mention.

The All – Nebraska team is selected from six junior colleges in the state of Nebraska and is picked by balloting of the coaches.

 

 

NPCC Knights Travel to Northwest Kansas

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Knights travel Tuesday, January 6 to Goodland, Kansas to play the Northwest Kansas Technical College Mavericks at the Max L. Jones Fieldhouse..

North Platte Community College has a 10-3 record on the season, while Northwest Kansas is 9-7.

This is the first game back for the Knights after the winter break.  The Knights defeated the Mavericks 81-68 on December 10 at the McDonald – Belton gymnasium.    Northwest Kansas will be playing their second game since the break losing to Frank Phillips College 70-64 on the road.

North Platte is led in scoring by sophomore Cameron Williams who is scoring 23.1 points per game.  Williams is currently in 11th place in the country in scoring.  Williams also leads Region IX in scoring.

Other Knights scoring in double figures are Marco Pascolo with 11.1 points per game, and Shyquinn Dix with 11.0 points per game.

The Mavericks are led in scoring by DeAngelo Stewart with 14.5 points per game. Stewart scored 13 in the previous outing against North Platte.

Montrell Williams and James Sylvester are the other Mavericks in double figures.  Williams is averaging 12.9 points per game; Sylvester is averaging 10.3 points per game.

Tip–off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. CST.

Hopping Named New NPCC Volleyball Coach

Kevin O’Connor, North Platte Community College Men’s Head Basketball Coach and Athletic Director has announced the hiring of Alexa Hopping, as the new Head Women’s Volleyball Coach.

Hopping replaces Sally Thalken, who retired following the season after 34 years of coaching;  and will take over duties immediately.

Hopping played volleyball for the Lady Knights during the 2008 and 2009 seasons.  During the 2009 season Hopping was named to the Nebraska Community College Athletic Association All-Conference team, as well as the National Junior College Athletic Association All Region IX team.

During the 2013 and 2014 seasons, Hopping served as the assistant coach for the Lady Knights Volleyball team.
Further details may be released closer to the 2015 Fall Volleyball season.

NPCC Knights Softball Team to Host Winter Camp

Knights-SoftballThe North Platte Community College Knights softball team will be hosting their Winter Softball Camp Saturday, January 17, 2015 at the North Campus hitting facility.  The camp will run from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  All ages are welcome to attend.

Cost for the camp is $45.  The entry fee includes the camp, lunch with the North Platte Community College softball players and coaches, and admission to the men’s and women’s basketball game against Southeast Community College.  Game times are at 2:00 p.m. for the women’s game, and 4:00 p.m. for the men’s game.

The camp will focus on fielding, hitting, base running and throwing.  The North Platte Community College softball team and coaches will also work one on one with the campers to improve their softball skills.

North Platte Community College head softball coach Janelle Higgins said: “We have had great kids and sold out camps the last two years and looking forward to another great camp this year. Our girls love interacting with the campers and showing them what our program is all about and we are family.”

Campers need to bring their bats, glove and shoes.

The deadline for registering for the camp is January, 10, 2015.  The camp is limited to 32 athletes, so get your registration in as soon as possible. The complete camp brochure can be found on the North Platte Community College athletic website,  www.npccknights.com .
