NPCC Knights men’s basketball fall to Hastings College JV

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Knights men’s basketball team suffered its second loss of the season Sunday to Hastings College Junior Varsity Broncos at the Lynn Farrell Arena in Hastings 67-48.  Hastings led at halftime 32-24.

CJ Polk was the only Knight to score in double figures with 13 points.  Tyree Peter led North Platte with 11 rebounds.

“We just didn’t show up to play,” said Knights head coach Kevin O’Connor.  The Knights shot 21 percent from the field compared to 44 percent for the Broncos.

The Knights (6-2) hope to return to the win column when they face Doane College Junior Varsity on Sunday, November 30 at McDonald – Belton Gymnasium.  Tip-off is at 2:00 PM (CST).

NPCC Knights Fall to Trinidad State

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Knights men’s basketball team were defeated by the Trinidad State Junior College Trojans on Saturday afternoon, 82-74 in Region IX play.  North Platte drops to 6-1 on the season, 1-1 in Region IX, and 3-1 at home.  The loss ends a record setting 31 game winning streak at McDonald – Belton gymnasium.

Knights head coach Kevin O’Connor said, “We were just flat today and maybe Trinidad had a lot to do with that.”  O’Connor added, “They (Trinidad) certainly deserved to win the game today and played very well.”

The Knights led at halftime 37-31, but were outscored by the Trojans 51-37 in the second half.

Trinidad was nearly perfect from the free throw line, making 14 out of 15 attempts.  The miss coming with just six seconds left in the game. The Trojans also made 53 percent from behind the three point line, hitting 8 of 15 shots.

The Knights were led in scoring by sophomores Cameron Williams and Marco Pascolo; each having 16 points apiece.   Pascolo also had 6 rebounds.  Tyree Peter led the Knights in rebounding with 9.

Other players scoring in double figures for the Knights were: CJ Polk with 15, and Shyquinn Dix with 10.

The Trojans were led in scoring by Elijah Valdez and Preston Bungei who shared game high honors with 23 points. Bungei went 6 for 6 from the free throw line.  The only other Trinidad player to score in double figures was Treyvon Andres, who finished with 10 points.

The Trojans improve to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in Region IX.

NPCC Lady Knights Basketball Defeat Hastings College JV

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Lady Knights Basketball team traveled to Hastings on Friday night, defeating the Hastings College Junior Varsity Lady Broncos 57-56.

Lady Knights head coach Richatrd Thurin said, “We played well when we had to.”

Freshman Sarah Mahr from Sidney  made two crucial free throws to put the Lady Knights up by two at the end of the game.

The Lady Broncos led at halftime by a score of 30-28.

The Lady Knights are 2-0 against the Lady Broncos this year, previously defeating them at home on November 12, 76-70.

April Stull led the Lady Knights in scoring with 22 points.

The Lady Knights do not play again until December 2, when they travel to Colby, Kansas  looking to avenge the  58-54 loss to the Colby Community College Lady Trojans.

NPCC Knights Men’s Basketball Defeats Otero Junior College

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Knights men’s basketball team opened up Region IX play with a win over Otero Junior College Rattlers 91-77.

The victory was North Platte Community College Head Coach Kevin O’Connor’s 600th win.  Coach O’Connor said “I didn’t win any games, but the players that have played here have won them.”

The Knights remain unbeaten on the year improving their record to 6-0, 3-0 at home.  The win extends the Knights winning streak at home to 31.

The Rattlers started out the game on a 13-6 run.   Freshmen Shyquinn Dix and CJ Polk came off the bench to spark the Knights and gained the lead 16-15 on a 3-pointer by Dix.  The game went back and forth with six lead changes and seven ties during the first half.  Otero led at halftime 42-37.

In the second half, the Knights broke it open with a five 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to take the lead 71-57 and never trailed again.  Sophomore Riley Rice from Mullen hit two of the five as part of his career high 8 points.

The Knights were led in scoring by Cameron Williams with 28 points to lead all scorers and had 6 assists.  Dix followed with 21 points.  The other Knights to score in double figures were Marco Pascolo and CJ Polk with 11 and 10 points respectively.   Pascolo also contributed with 15 rebounds.

The Rattlers were led in scoring by Josh Blaylock with 22 points, TreVante O’Neal with 16 points, and Brandon Wilson with 12.

The Knights will host the Trinidad State Trojans on Saturday. The Trojans are coming off a six point loss to McCook.  Tip-off is at 2:00 and can be heard on ESPN Radio 1410 or online at www.nothplattepost.com.

NPCC Knights Basketball Prepare for Busy Weekend

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Knights look to remain unbeaten as they play three games this weekend. They will host the Otero Junior College Rattlers and the Trinidad State Junior College Trojans and go on the road to play Hastings College Junior Varsity.

Otero Junior College will come to town on Friday, November 21. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.  The Rattlers come into the contest with a 6-2 record and currently on a four game winning streak.  They are led in scoring by Tre O’Neal with 15 points per game (ppg).  Brandon Wilson follows in scoring with 11.4 ppg.  Wilson also leads the team in rebounding with 5.6 rebounds per game.

Trinidad State Junior College then visits on Saturday, November 22 with tip-off being at 2:00 PM.  The Trojans are currently 5-3.  Scoring leaders for the Trojans are Joe Smith with 13 ppg, Preston Bunger with 12.6 ppg, and Elijah Valdez with 10.8 ppg.  Treyvon Andres and Bunger lead the team in rebounding with both averaging a little over seven boards a piece

On Sunday, November 23, the Knights travel to play the Hastings College Junior Varsity Broncos.  The Knights defeated the Broncos on November 6, 85-79 at McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.  In that game the Knights were led in scoring by Cameron Williams with 24 points, Matt Thomas with 13 points, and Marco Pascolo with 11 points.  The Broncos were led by Jake Hansen with 15 points.

NPCC Lady Knights Travel to Hastings College JV

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team takes to the road to face Hastings College Junior Varsity on Friday, November 21.  This is the second meeting of the two colleges this season.

In the first meeting, the Lady Knights defeated the Lady Broncos 76-70.  Sophomore April Stull scored a career high 32 points to pace the Lady Knights.

Lady Knights head coach Richard ​Thurin said, “We need to have balanced scoring to be successful.”

Thurin added that when they play junior varsity teams at their place, it is hard to prepare for them because the players could vary from those that played here.

Tip-off is at 7:00 pm at the Lynn Farrell Arena in Hastings.

NPCC Knights Conquer the Conquistadors

npcc-knightsIn a battle of two unbeaten teams, North Platte Community College traveled to Dodge City, Kansas and came away with a 70-68 win over the Conquistadors of Dodge City Community College on a last second shot by sophomore Marco Pascolo.  The Knights remain unbeaten at 5-0. Dodge City fell to 5-1.

Knights head coach Kevin O’Connor said that Dodge City is a talented and athletic team.

“We played decent,” O’Connor said. “Except for the runs at the beginning of each half.”

The Conquistadors jumped out to a 10-0 lead during the first two and a half minutes of the game.  The Knights went on an 18-7 run to take their first lead of 18-17 with 11 minutes to go in the first half.

The game was tied at 23 when Dodge City went on a 9-0 run to lead 32-23.  They held on to lead at halftime 41-36.

At the beginning of the second half, the Conquistadors went on a 15-6 run and held their biggest lead of the game 56-42 with just under 13 minutes to play in the game.

The Knights started battling back by not turning the ball over and the offense of sophomores Cameron Williams and Marco Pascolo,

The Knights took the lead 59-56 with 6 minutes to go on a three-pointer by Pascolo.

Dodge City regained  the lead. Freshman Matt Thomas hit a three-pointer with 2 minutes to play to put the Knights within two points of the lead  66-64.  On the next possession,  the Knights had a good defensive stand causing Dodge City’s EJ Eaves to miss a layup and the Knights came down the court and took the lead on a three pointer by Pascolo, 67-66.

The Conquistadors were at the free throw line with 3.8 seconds to play.  Eaves hit both free throws to put Dodge City out in front 68-67.  The Knights had 3.8 seconds to go the length of the court and with 1.4 seconds Pascolo hit the game winning shot.

Pascolo led the Knights in scoring with 18 points.  He was perfect from the field shooting 7 of 7 and 4 of 4 behind the three point line.  Cameron Williams and Tyree Peter finished with  15 and 12 points respectively.  Pascolo also pulled down 11 rebounds.

The Conquistadors were led by Eaves, who had a game high 19 points.  The only other player to score in double figures for Dodge City was Ameer Jackson, who finished with 16 points.

The Knights return home this weekend to open up Region IX play.  Otero comes to town on Friday with a 7:30 tip-off.  On Saturday, Trinidad State is in town.  Tip-off for the Trinidad game is 2:00.

Sally Thalken Retirement Recognition – Save the Date

North Platte Community College will be honoring head volleyball coach, Sally Thalken at halftime of the men’s basketball game against Northeastern Junior College on December 9. Game time is at 7:30 PM.

Coach Thalken has announced her retirement from coaching after 34 years at North Platte Community College.

NPCC Knights Travel to Dodge City

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Knights look to improve on their 4-0 record Tuesday, November 18, as they travel to face the Dodge City Community College Conquistadors.  The Conquistadors come into the contest with a 4-1 record.

The Conquistadors have beaten Region IX member Lamar Community College and preseason No. 19 State Fair Community College.  Head coach Kevin O’Connor says, “Playing a quality junior college team in Dodge City on their home court, we are going to get challenged. They are a very talented team.”

Dodge City is led in scoring by freshman EJ Eaves who is averaging 18 points per game. Other players to watch are: Ameer Jackson, 14.1 points per game (ppg) and Payton Pervier, 12.6 ppg and 11 rebounds per game.

The Knights are coming off a 101-62 win over Midland University Junior Varsity last Friday night.  They are led in scoring by Cameron Williams with a 20.2 average.  Matt Thomas, 14 ppg, Tyree Peter, 13.2 ppg and Marco Pascolo 12.2 ppg are the other Knights averaging in double figures.

NPCC Lady Knights Defeat Doane College JV

npcc-knightsThe North Platte Community College Lady Knights rebounded from a disappointing loss Saturday, by defeating the Doane College Junior Varsity Sunday afternoon 73-39 at the McDonald – Belton gymnasium to improve their season record to 3-4.

“We played extremely well throughout the game, especially in free throw shooting and passing the ball,” Lady Knights head coach Richard Thurin said.

The Lady Knights shot 10 for 12 from the free throw line and handed out 8 assists led by Ester Micheva with 4.

The Lady Knights led at the break 40-20 after jumping out to a 16-3 lead with 13:45 to play in the first half.

The second half saw the Lady Knights expand their lead and were able to substitute and give their starters a break.

The Lady Knights had a balanced scoring attack led by sophomore April Stull with 14 points.  Aliyah Brown was the only other Lady Knight in double figures with 10 points.  Sarah Mahr had 9 points.

Sarah Mahr also had 8 rebounds to lead North Platte, followed by Aliyah Brown with 7, T’Keyah Stapleton and April Stull with 6 rebounds.

Bre Hagedorn of the Doane College JV Lady Tigers led all scorers with 19 points.  She was the only Lady Tiger in double figures.  Hagedorn also pulled down 12 rebounds.

North Platte Lady Knights travel to Hastings on Friday, November 21 to play the Hastings College Junior Varsity.  The Lady Knights defeated the Lady Broncos 76-70 this past Wednesday.
