No. 18 NPCC Knights End Region IX With Victory Over Laramie County

npcc-knightsNorth Platte – The No. 18 North Platte Community College men’s basketball team (24-4, 12-4 South Sub-Region, 4-1 NCCAC) ended their Region IX regular season schedule with a victory over the Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles (17-11, 8-7 South Sub-Region) by a score of 91-81.

The Knights got off to a fast start in the first half as they opened up a 48-31 lead at the break on the strength of 63 percent shooting from the field and 71 percent shooting from the 3-point line. The Knights placed two players in double-figures in the first half as Ethan Montalvo had 16 and Tim Simmons had 12. The Golden Eagles only had one player in double-figures as Deshon Portley finished with 13 points at intermission.

In the second half, the Knights were able to hold on to earn the victory as Laramie County outscored the Knights 50-43 mainly on the strength of 18 second half points from Portley.

Montalvo led the Knights with 29 points while Simmons finished with 22 points. Tre’Vaun Hymer had his second straight game of 19 points off the bench for the Knights.

“It was a great win for our team,” said Montalvo. “I thought we played great as a team and Tim and Tre’Vaun have had back-to-back strong games.”

Portley led all scorers with 31 points. Darien Fernandez, Deon Edwin and Spencer Svejcar all finished with 10 points for the Golden Eagles.

North Platte then closes out the regular season on Saturday Feb. 22 as the Southeast Community College Storm (19-9, 0-4 NCCAC) comes to town. The Storm are a NCCAC opponent and a win would clinch the conference our-right for the Knights for the third straight year and ninth title in ten years. The Knights defeated the Storm on Jan. 17 in Beatrice 83-68 behind a career-high 40 points from Ethan Montalvo.

The Knights currently lead the NCCAC with a 4-1 record. McCook Community College is in second place with a 3-2 record with Central Community College in third place with a 3-3 record and Southeast is fourth with a 0-4 record. McCook and Southeast square off on Friday before the Storm head to North Platte for the Saturday game.

NPCC Lady Knights Defeat Northwest Kansas Tech

npcc-knightsGoodland, KS – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team (14-12, 2-1 Region IX Division II, 3-2 NCCAC) traveled to Goodland, Kan. on Wednesday night and defeated the Northwest Kansas Technical College Lady Mavericks (3-25) by a score of 73-69.

The Lady Knights got off to a fast start as they raced out to a 13-1 lead. The Lady Mavericks responded with a 0-7 run of their own to force a timeout by the Lady Knights. North Platte responded with an 8-2 run of their own to stretch the lead out. Northwest Kansas answered with another run and tied the game at 21 before taking a 29-34 lead into the locker room.

The Lady Knights regrouped at halftime and scored 44 points in the second half to earn the hard fought victory on the road.

DaVontaye Merritt led the Lady Knights with 21 points and April Stull scored 17. Jordan Dickerson was also in double-figures with 13 points.

“We played well early and in the second half,” said head coach Richard Thurin. “It was good to have three girls in double figures and our inside game was a big difference.”

On Saturday, the Lady Knights host Region IX Division II and Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference (NCCAC) foe Southeast Community College Lady Storm (15-12, 1-2 Region IX Division II, 1-3 NCCAC) at 2 p.m. The game has double importance for the Lady Knights as a victory would earn them the #1 seed and the opportunity to host the Region IX Division II Championship game on March 3 as well as earning them the out-right NCCAC Championship.

The Lady Knights won in Beatrice on Jan. 17 59-50 behind 22 points and 16 rebounds from Merritt and 16 points and 16 rebounds from Stull.

The current standings in Region IX Division II has North Platte leading the way with a 2-1 record, followed by Central Community College at 2-2 and Southeast at 1-2. A victory guarantees the Lady Knights the #1 seed and a bye to the championship game which they would host. A loss would have all three teams tied at 2-2 after everyone would have split.

In the NCCAC, North Platte leads with a 3-2 record while Southeast Community College is at 2-2, Central Community College is 3-3, and McCook Community College is 2-3. The Conference Championship would be the first in school history for the Lady Knights basketball team.

North Platte Community College Foundation Sponsoring NPCC Knights Halftime Activities Wednesday

npcc-knights The North Platte Community College Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit devoted to promoting and enhancing the educational opportunities at North Platte Community College, will sponsor the halftime of the NPCC Knight’s game against Laramie County Community College on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.

The evening will include halftime shoot-out activities and a chance to meet some of the NPCC Foundation Board of Directors. It will also be a good opportunity to learn more about the NPCC Foundation Knight’s Court Bleacher Campaign.

The campaign hopes to raise $500,000 to remove and replace the 40-year-old bleacher seats that are currently in the gym. The plans also include the addition of 234 seat-back chairs located in the each of the center sections on the North and South sides of the gym, for a total of 468 chairs.

The Knights first host the Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles (17-10, 8-6 South Sub-Region) on Wednesday Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. to close out their Region IX South Sub-Region slate. The last regular season game of the year for the Knights is Saturday, Feb. 22 at 4 p.m. as the Knights welcome NCCAC foe, the Southeast Community College Storm (19-9, 0-4 NCCAC) to McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

The Knights host Laramie County on Wednesday at 7 p.m. looking to avenge their first loss of the season to the Golden Eagles. The Knights fell 78-82 in Cheyenne, Wyo. on Jan. 15 despite 28 points from Ethan Montalvo and 21 points from Cameron Williams. Deshon Portley led the way for the Golden Eagles as he finished with 26 points.

The Knights have assured themselves of at least the number two seed in the upcoming Region IX Tournament that will be held March 1-5.

npcc-knightsNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team (13-12, 2-1 Region IX Division II, 3-2 NCCAC) have two games remaining on their regular season schedule before postseason play begins. On Wednesday, Feb. 19 the Lady Knights travel to Goodland, Kan. to face the Northwest Kansas Technical College Lady Mavericks (3-24) at 5 p.m. and then host the Southeast Community College Lady Storm (15-12, 1-2 Region IX Division II, 1-3 NCCAC) on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m.

The Lady Knights first travel to face off with the Lady Mavericks on Wednesday. The Lady Mavericks and Lady Knights squared off on Nov. 22 in the Lady Knights sixth game of the year. In that contest, the Lady Knights emerged victorious with a 92-76 win behind 28 points and nine rebounds from April Stull and 26 points and 13 rebounds from DaVontaye Merritt. Courtney Widick was also in double-figures with 15 points.

NPCC Knights Softball Sweep Colby to Open Season

Knights-SoftballColby, KS – The North Platte Community College softball team (2-0) traveled to Colby, Kan. Saturday and came away with a sweep of the Colby Community College Trojans (0-2) by winning the first game 11-9 and the second 19-13.

In the first game Katharine Savolt was 2-5 with one run and a homerun. Britlee Anderson was 2-4 with a run and Alexis Bryant was 2-3 with one run and a sacrifice. Soliel Atenza was 1-3 with a run and a walk. The winning pitcher was Shannon Lieber who earned the win in eight innings.

In the second game Siarra Velasquez was 3-5 with two runs. Atenza was 3-4 with a run, a walk and a stolen base. Lieber was 3-5 with three runs and a homerun. Bryant was 4-5 and Savolt was 3-5 with a homerun.

Lieber earned her second win of the season in as many tries and Savolt earned the save.

“It was a great team effort today,” said head coach Janelle Higgins. “Both games we battled back from being behind at some point in the game. The team never gave up! In game one we came back in extra innings to win. We showed a lot of heart, fight and determination today. Our sophomores really stepped up and our freshman did too. We had some errors throughout both games but that is expected with first games and the girls never gave up and battled hard all day!”

“Shannon (Lieber) threw really well,” said Higgins. “She took control of the plate today. Our hitting kept us alive, which showed all our hard work hitting and at CrossFit this winter paid off. We were able to play (roughly) six hours and still have gas in the tank.”

After getting their season underway, the Knights have two weeks of practice before returning to the diamond when they travel to Garden City, Kan. to play in the Garden City Tournament. The Knights will face Garden City Community College, Otero Junior College, Pratt Community College and Lamar Community College.

No. 13 NPCC Knights Earn Victory Over Western Nebraska

npcc-knightsNorth Platte – The No. 13 North Platte Community College men’s basketball team (23-4, 11-4 South Sub-Region) earned victory Saturday afternoon in McDonald-Belton Gymnasium as they defeated the Western Nebraska Community College Cougars (15-12, 6-7 South Sub-Region) 80-69 in a Region IX contest behind five players in double figures.

The Knights came out swinging early in the first half used an 11-0 run in the first half to take their largest lead of the first half into intermission at 41-27 behind 12 points from Tre’Vaun Hymer off the bench and 11 points from Ethan Montalvo as the Knights shot 54 percent from the field and only turned the ball over four times.

In the second half the Cougars used a “box and one” on Montalvo allowing several other players to get going offensively for the Knights. The Knights held the Cougars to 39 percent shooting in the game and the Knights out-rebounded the Cougars 42-32.

Hymer led all scorers as he finished with 19 points. Sophomore Tim Simmons scored 10 points in the second half and finished with 18. Aireon Porter recorded another double-double as he finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds after having 10 rebounds at half. Cameron Williams was the fifth man in double-figures as he finished with 11 points and Montalvo was held scoreless in the second half to also finish with 11 points.

“I just wanted to take advantage of the opportunities I had,” said Hymer. “It was a good team win with five us in double-figures.”

Derrick Bowers led the Cougars with 16 points while Tyler Crosbie finished with 15 points and Youshoupha Kane and Brandon Morney each had 11.

“It was a good team win and we had a lot of guys step up and make plays,” said assistant coach Nathan Wieseler. “Tre’Vaun had another big game tonight and it is always good to have five guys in double-figures.”

Next week marks the end of the regular season as the Knights host Laramie County Community College (16-10, 7-6 South Sub-Region) on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. and Southeast Community College (19-9, 0-4 NCCAC) on Feb. 22 at 4 p.m. The Knights fell at Laramie County 78-82 and defeated Southeast 83-68.

No. 13 NPCC Knights Knock Off Eastern Wyoming

npcc-knightsNorth Platte – The No. 13 North Platte Community College men’s basketball team (22-4, 10-4 South Sub-Region) got back on the winning track Friday night as they knocked off the Eastern Wyoming Lancers (10-14, 2-10 South Sub-Region) by a score of 74-57.

The Knights Ethan Montalvo got off to a fast start and helped the Knights to a 35-28 halftime lead as he scored 16 points in the half of 7 of 9 shooting. The Knights and Lancers traded runs in the first half as the Knights had an 11-2 run and the Lancers answered with a 12-2 run of their own. Jason McClellan kept the Lancers in it with 11 first half points.

In the second half the Knights continued their defensive intensity and continued to find their offensive groove as several other players stepped into the act as Montalvo only scored one point in the half. The Knights ended the evening with four players in double-figures while the Lancers placed three in double-figures.

Montalvo led all scorers with 17 while Tre’Vaun Hymer came off the bench to give the Knights a spark and finish with 13. Aireon Porter also scored 13 while chipping in 13 rebounds. Cameron Williams was the fourth Knight in double-figures as he finished with 11 points.

McClellan led the Lancers with 16 points but only five second half points. Jonathan Doss scored 15 and Mark Hall had 11 to pace the Lancers.

“It was good to get back on the winning side of things,” said head coach Kevin O’Connor. “It was great to see Tre’Vaun step up off the bench and to see our team hold them under 60 points.”

The Knights finish out the week tomorrow when they host Western Nebraska Community College Cougars (15-10, 6-5 South Sub-Region) at 3 p.m. North Platte defeated the Cougars on Jan. 10 75-68.

NPCC Lady Knights Come Up Short Against Eastern Wyoming

npcc-knightsNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team (13-12, 2-1 Region IX Division II) came up short Friday night in McDonald-Belton Gymnasium against the Eastern Wyoming College Lady Lancers (15-10) as they fell 60-70 despite a double-double from April Stull.

In the first half, the Lady Knights drew first blood as they scored first and then maintained the lead for the first 12 minutes of the first half on the back of an 8-2 run. The second eight minutes was a different story as the Lady Lancers used a 16-2 run of their own to earn a lead. The Lady Lancers led by as many as nine points before taking a 28-35 advantage into the locker room. Jordan Nelson of Eastern Wyoming led all scorers at the break with 13 points. Courtney Widick of North Platte led the Lady Knights with nine points.

The Lady Knights came out firing in the second half and were able take a lead behind a 12-2 run and 12 second half points from April Stull. The Lady Knights were not able to keep the momentum rolling in their favor as the Lady Lancers would pull away and take their largest lead of the game in the final seconds to earn the 10 point victory.

April Stull led the Lady Knights with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Widick finished with 12 points and Jordan Dickerson added 10. Jordan Nelson led all scorers with 21 points and all eight Lady Lancers who dressed got in the scoring column.

“We were able to take care of the ball better tonight,” said assistant coach Nolan Collins “but we still need to make more progress in the next week.

The Lady Knights are done for the week as the game originally scheduled for Feb 16 at Nebraska Wesleyan JV has been cancelled.

The Lady Knights finish out their regular season next week with two games. First North Platte travels to Goodland, Kan. to take on Northwest Kansas Technical College (3-24) on Wednesday Feb. 19 at 5 p.m. The Lady Knights defeated the Lady Broncos 92-76 on Nov. 22.

The last home game and last game of the regular season for the Lady Knights is Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. when they host the Southeast Community College Lady Storm (15-12, 1-2 Region IX Division II, 1-3 NCCAC) in a very important Region IX Division II match-up. The Lady Knights won in Beatrice 59-50 on Jan. 17.

NPCC Knights Softball Kicks Off Season in Colby

Knights-SoftballNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College softball team kicks off their season this Saturday, February 15 as they travel to Colby, Kan. to square off with the Colby Community College Trojans for a double header at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.

“The team has been working hard inside and a few times that we have been able to get outside to practice,” said head coach Janelle Higgins. “We are excited to get games started.”

The Knights return five sophomores from last year’s team that went 4-39. The sophomores include Soliel Atenza of Lomita, Calif., Alexis Bryant of Wellington, Colo., Rylee Murphyof Ashland, Katharine Savolt of Yuma, Colo. and Siarra Velasquez of Carter Lake, Iowa.

The Knights also welcome nine new freshman to the mix as the season gets underway. The freshman include Britlee Anderson of North Spanish Fork, Utah, Shaylynne Campo of Fremont, Jazmin Chang of Lahaina, Hawaii, Shannon Lieber of Lone Tree, Colo., Brittney Odum of Aurora, Colo., Christina Rodie of Wheat Ridge, Colo., Sara Runia of Aurora, Colo., Sydney Standage of North Platte and Brooke Wakefield of Lone Tree, Colo.

“We have a solid foundation being laid by our sophomores and a very talented and energetic freshman class, everyone is eager to show what they can bring to the team as a whole,” said Higgins. “The team is meshing very well on and off the field which makes practices fun to watch as everyone is pushing each other to better as a whole.”
