No. 25 NPCC Knights Increase Defensive Intensity in Win Over Midland JV

npcc-knightsNorth Platte – The #25 North Platte Community College men’s basketball team (6-0) turned up the defensive intensity Friday night against Midland College JV en route to a 91-53 win.

The Knights started off the game with a good defensive effort as they raced out to a 24-8 lead with 10 minutes left and built it to 36-13 before taking a 30-47 lead into intermission. In the second half the Knights continued their strong play as they would outscore Midland JV 44-23.

“I thought we came out and competed hard,” said head coach Kevin O’Connor. “We saw some guys do some things in a game that we have seen them do in practice which was good to see.”

The Knights were led by freshman Cameron Williams‘ 16 points and freshman Aireon Porter‘s double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds). Also scoring in double figures for the Knights was sophomore Ethan Montalvo who finished with 15 points. Sophomore Tre’Vaun Hymer scored nine points and collected seven rebounds.

“I tried to be more aggressive tonight,” said Williams. “It was a good team win and I am looking forward to playing again tomorrow.”

North Platte returns to action tomorrow as Doane College JV comes to town for a 3 p.m. tip in McDonald-Belton Gymnasium. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1410 with Robert Lovell on the call.

The Knights open up Region IX play Nov. 22 and 23 against Otero Junior College (4-1) at 7:30 p.m. and Trinidad State Junior College (3-2) at 2 p.m. respectively.

No. 16 NPCC Lady Knights Travel to Colby Saturday

npcc-knightsNorth Platte – The No. 16 North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team (1-3) travels to Colby, Kan. to take on the Colby Community College Lady Trojans (1-4) on Saturday Nov. 16 at 6 p.m.

The Knights return to action after a week off and are led by sophomore DaVontaye Merritt’s 18.3 points per game to go along with 8.0 rebounds per game and freshman April Stull’s 8.5 rebounds per game to go along with 13.3 points per game. Sophomore Jordan Dickerson leads the team with 4.8 assists per game and is third in scoring with 6.3 points per game.

The Lady Trojans defeated Tabor College JV (81-62) before falling to Western Nebraska Community College (45-68), Phoenix College (40-58), Fort Carson Military (53-68) and Trinidad State Junior College 49-86. Colby will also face Lamar Community College on Nov. 14 before facing the Lady Knights. The Lady Trojans are led by Amanda Miller and McKenna Ortner who each average 7.4 points per game.

The Lady Knights return home next week as they face Northeast Community College on Tuesday Nov. 19 at 5 p.m. and Northwest Kansas Technical College on Friday Nov. 22 at 5:30 p.m.

No. 25 NPCC Knights Score 105 in Victory over York JV

npcc-knightsNorth Platte – The No. 25 North Platte Community College men’s basketball team (5-0) scored early and often as they raced out to a 105-78 victory over the York College JV.

“A good way to open the season at home,” said assistant coach Nathan Wieseler. “It was a good opportunity for us to get a lot of guys minutes and see what they could do.”

The Knights came out strong in the first half as they shot 50% from the 3 point line en route to a 20 point halftime lead at 56-36. At the break Ethan Montalvo had 12 of his game high 14 points while Tim Simmons had seven of his 12 points in the first half.

In the second half the Knights continued their strong play as they closed out the game. Jake Maslo would score seven of his 13 points to be the third Knight in double figures. The Knights shot 50% from the field for the game.

“Offensively we executed well, but I believe out defense still needs work,” said Maslo. “Overall it was a good win for our first home game of the season.”

North Platte returns to action this weekend as they take on Midland University JV on Friday at 7 p.m. and Doane College JV on Saturday at 3 p.m. in McDonald-Belton Gymnasium. Both games can be heard on the exclusive home of the Knights, ESPN Radio 1410.

North Platte opens up Region IX play Nov. 22 and 23 as Otero Junior College (3-1) and Trinidad State Junior College (2-2) come to town.

 

No. 25 NPCC Knights Home Opener Tomorrow

npcc-knightsThe No. 25 North Platte Community College men’s basketball team (4-0) takes to the court tomorrow night at 7 p.m. as they take on York College JV in McDonald-Belton Gymnasium to open up a five game home stand.

The Knights have opened with a perfect 4-0 record after defeating Northeast Community College (67-66) and Doane College JV (98-62) in McCook the opening weekend of the season and Seward County Community College (57-54) and Garden City Community College (69-62) this past weekend in Garden City, Kan.

North Platte returns to action this weekend as they take on Midland University JV on Friday at 7 p.m. and Doane College JV on Saturday at 3 p.m. in McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

The Knights are led by sophomore Ethan Montalvo who is averaging 14.3 points per game and freshman Cameron Williams who is averaging 10.5 points per game. Tim Simmons (7.8 ppg), Tre’Vaun Hymer (7.8 ppg) and Marco Pascolo (7.5 ppg) are the next leading scorers for the Knights.

No. 25 NPCC Knights Take Down Garden City

npcc-knightsThe No. 25 North Platte Community College men’s basketball team (4-0) took down the Garden City Community College Broncbusters (3-1) in the conclusion of the Garden City Classic. The Knights were able to overcome a three point halftime deficit to earn the victory 67-62.

The game started slowly offensively for both teams as each worked to gain a rhythm. Both the Knights and Broncbusters were held to 37 percent shooting in the first half with Garden City making three more free throws to earn the advantage at intermission. Ethan Montalvo led the Knights at the break with 8 points.

The second half started with the Knights falling behind by six points before they rallied to take the lead. The Knights were able to find their scoring groove led by Tim Simmons’ 11 second half point on the way to scoring 40 points in the second.

Simmons finished with a game high 16 points and four assists. Montalvo and Cameron Williams were also in double figures as they both finished with 14 points. Williams and Jake Maslo led the Knights in rebounding with six apiece.

“We were able to turn our defense into offense,” said Simmons. “We were screening for each other and finding the open man.”

Jalen Variste led the Broncbusters with 16 points and Rueben King finished with 10 points. Jade Cathey finished with a game high seven rebounds.

“It is always a good win when you go on the road and win on someone else’s home court,” said head coach Kevin O’Connor. “We competed and found a way to win two tough games this weekend.”

The Knights have their first home game of the year on Tuesday Nov. 12 as the take on the York College JV at 7 p.m.The game is the start of a five game home stand for the Knights. Midland University JV and Doane College JV come to town on Friday Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. and Saturday Nov. 16 at 3 p.m. respectively. The following weekend the Knights open up Region IX play as Otero Junior College and Trinidad State Junior College come to North Platte.

No. 16 NPCC Lady Knights Knocked Off by Iowa Lakes

npcc-knightsThe No. 16 North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team (1-3) wrapped up the Hawks Classic on Saturday afternoon as they fell to the Iowa Lakes Community College Lady Lakers 57-66.

The lady Knights played well the first half as they ended the first half with a 32-26 lead. In the second half the Lady Lakers would control the action as they won the second half 40-25. Turnovers and fouls would again plague the Lady Knights as they finished with 18 turnovers and 23 fouls to give up 36 free throw attempts.

April Stull would lead the Lady Knights as she finished with a double-double. Stull finished with 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead in both categories. DaVontaye Merritt almost finished with her second straight double-double as she was the second leading scorer and third leading rebounder with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Kristian Roth finished with nine rebounds for the Lady Knights.

Shabreka Edwards led the Lady Lakers with 28 points while Shaunte Tucker had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

“We played hard,” said head coach Dick Thurin. “We need to finish. I think we are getting better.”

The Lady Knights travel to Colby, Kan. to face Colby Community College on Nov. 16 before returning home on Nov. 19 to face Northeast Community College at 5 p.m.

No. 25 NPCC Knights Knock Off Seward County

npcc-knightsThe No. 25 North Platte Community College men’s basketball team (3-0) emerged victorious on Friday afternoon over the Seward County Saints (1-2) as they held on to win in the final minute 57-54.

The Knights held a two point lead with 25 seconds remaining in the game with Seward County’s ball. The Knights played a zone as they had most of the game holding the Saints to long jump shot that led to a long rebound. The ball was loose on the floor and Tim Simmons dove on the floor to secure a jump ball which gave the Knights possession. Simmons was fouled on the inbounds and immediately fouled with six seconds remaining. Simmons went one of two as the Knights survived a long 3-point shot to win the game.

The game started slowly as both struggled to find a rhythm offensively as 24 fouls were called on each team. The Knights were able to take a 27-21 into the locker room. The Knights started the second half strong as they were able to take the largest lead of the game at 10 points early in the second half. The Saints were able to chip away before taking a one point lead late in the game before the Knights would respond to take the lead and hold on in the end.

The Knights were led by 17 points from Ethan Montalvo as the only player in double figures. Jake Maslo was second for the Knights with nine points and 10 rebounds. Cameron Williams finished with eight points for the Knights. Kevin Smith led the Saints with 12 points.

North Platte continues the Garden City Classic tomorrow when they take on the Garden City Community College Bronc Busters at7:30 p.m. The Bronc Busters are 2-0 this season after defeating Sunrise Christian Prep 51-48 and Lamar Community College JV 99-52. Garden City plays Kingdom Prep Friday night before facing the Knights on Saturday. Jade Cathey leads the Bronc Busters with 15.5 ppg and Talan Whitaker is second with 11.5 ppg.

The Knights begin a five game home stand on Tuesday Nov. 12 as they take on the York College JV at 7 p.m. before hosting Midland University JV and Doane College JV on Nov. 15 and 16.

No. 16 NPCC Lady Knights Defeated by DMACC

npcc-knightsThe No. 16 North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team (1-2) traveled to Norfolk to compete in the Hawks Classic. In the opening game of the Classic, the Lady Knights were defeated by the Des Moines Area Community College Lady Bears 54-87.

The Lady Knights got out of the gate slowly as they would go into the locker room trailing 25-49. Turnover would plague the Lady Knights throughout the game as they turned the ball over 29 times in the contest. The Lady Knights also fouled the Lady Bears 21 times putting them on the line for 28 free throws of which they converted 20.

The Lady Knights only scorer in double figures was DaVontaye Merritt who finished with 24 points on 12-21 shooting from the field. The Lady Bears had three players in double-figures led by Carlee Schuhmacher who finished with 28 points and 15 rebounds.

“They were a good team,” said head coach Richard Thurin. “We need to learn how to step our game up to another level.”

North Platte returns to the hardwood tomorrow at noon as they face Iowa Lakes Community College. The Lady Lakers are 1-2 on the season after losing to Brown Mackie College 71-79 and Highland Community College 39-92 while beating Northwest College 76-66.

The Lady Knights travel to Colby, Kan. to face Colby Community College on Nov. 16 before returning home on Nov. 19 to face Northeast Community College at 5 p.m.

The Classic features Garden City Community College, Seward County Community College and Kingdom Prep out of Iowa along with North Platte. The Knights face Seward County on Friday and hosts Garden City on Saturday.

The Knights open the Garden City Classic on Friday Nov. 8 at 3:30 p.m. against the Seward County Saints. The Saints are 1-1 this season after falling last weekend against the Colorado Kings 68-71 and defeating Northwest Kansas Tech 72-69. The Saints are led by Kevin Smith at 15.5 ppg and Niem Stevenson at 15.0 ppg.

North Platte continues the Garden City Classic on Saturday Nov. 9 when they take on the Garden City Community College Bronc Busters at 7:30 p.m.The Bronc Busters are 2-0 this season after defeating Sunrise Christian Prep 51-48 and Lamar Community College JV 99-52. The Lady Knights open up the Hawks Classic on Friday Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. against Des Moines Area Community College. The Lady Bears are 3-0 this season after defeating Briar Cliff University JV 82-53, Northern Oklahoma- Tankawa 95-70 and AIB College of Business 92-41.

North Platte returns to the hardwood the next day at noon as they face Iowa Lakes Community College. The Lady Lakers are 1-2 on the season after losing to Brown Mackie College 71-79 and Highland Community College 39-92 while beating Northwest College 76-66.

The Lady Knights are 1-1 after hosting the Hampton Inn Classic this past weekend. North Platte defeated Midland University JV 74-45 and fell to Fort Carson 58-64. The Lady Knights are led by DaVontaye Merritt at 15.5 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game. April Stull is right behind with 15.5 points per game and 8.5 rebounds per game. Jordan Dickerson is the third leading scorer at 9.5 points per game and leads the Lady Knights with 2.5 assists per game.

The Lady Knights travel to Colby, Kan. to face Colby Community College on Nov. 16 before returning home on Nov. 19 to face Northeast Community College at 5 p.m.
