Picture of Twin Toilets in Sochi Goes Viral

Twin ToiletsSOCHI, Russia (AP) — It’s a tale of two toilets.

When BBC reporter Steve Rosenberg went to use the bathroom at the cross-country skiing and biathlon center for next month’s Winter Olympics in Sochi, he found two toilets but only one stall.

His tweeted picture instantly became a national joke.

Although toilets like that are not common in Russia, social media users posted some pictures of other toilets side by side. One said this was standard at Russian soccer stadiums.

Russians jested that the toilets in Sochi were designed for a “tandem,” the name used to describe the duo of President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. One blogger altered Rosenberg’s photo to put in a framed portrait of the two leaders above the toilets.

The Sochi organizing committee has refused to comment.

Olympic Team USA Uniforms Get Made in USA Label

USA-OlympicsNEW YORK (AP) — Team USA will now wear the Made in the USA label.

Every article of clothing made by Ralph Lauren for the U.S. Olympic athletes in Sochi has been made by domestic craftsman and manufacturers.

Ralph Lauren Corp. used more than 40 vendors, from ranchers in the rural West to yarn spinners in Pennsylvania to sewers in New York’s Garment District for the closing ceremony outfits unveiled Tuesday. The ensemble includes a navy peacoat with a red stripe, a classic ski sweater with a reindeer motif and a hand-sewn American flag, and a tasseled chunky-knit hat.

During the 2012 games in London, it was a flashpoint in the media and among Washington politicians that much of the U.S. apparel was made overseas, especially China.

Washington DC to Bid for 2024 Summer Olympics

olympicsWASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s capital is making a push for the 2024 Olympic Games.

Organizers announced Tuesday the formation of DC 2024, aimed at bringing the Summer Games to the United States for the first time since Atlanta hosted in 1996.

DC 2024 president Bob Sweeney calls Washington “the safest and most secure city in the world.” He pointed out that the largest expense of any Olympics is security, and that D.C. has it “built in to our everyday life here in Washington.”

The bid has a long way to go. Washington was one of 35 U.S. cities to receive a letter from the U.S. Olympic Committee to gauge interest, and Sweeney expects about 10 to step forward as serious candidates.

The 2024 Games will be awarded by international vote in 2017.
