Omaha Firms Give $42,500 More to Manning’s Charity

Peyton-Manning-OmahaOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A group of 17 Omaha companies is donating another $42,500 to Peyton Manning’s foundation for at-risk youth even though it was hard to hear him shout about Nebraska’s largest city during the Super Bowl.

Omaha’s love affair with Manning and his Denver Broncos got started after he yelled the city’s name 44 times during a playoff win over San Diego. Manning’s “Omaha! Omaha!” calls received widespread attention in social media and news stories.

The Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce said Monday that each of the participating companies agreed to donate $2,500 to Manning’s “Peyback Foundation” even though his snap counts were difficult to hear Sunday.

Earlier in the playoffs, a smaller group of companies agreed to donate $24,800 after Manning yelled “Omaha!” 31 times during the AFC Championship game.

Manning a Bust in Quest for Second Ring

Peyton-Manning-Denver-BroncEAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP)— All those records, all for naught.

On Saturday night, Peyton Manning was winning his record fifth NFL Most Valuable Player award. On Sunday night, he endured one of the worst big-game performances of his career.

“Our overall execution wasn’t real sharp–theirs was,” Manning said afterward.

On paper, Manning’s performance didn’t look too bad. He actually completed a Super Bowl record 34 passes out of 49 attempts. But he passed for just 280 yards. Manning threw two interceptions, one returned by Malcolm Smith for a touchdown and the other leading directly to a Seattle TD.

“They made more plays on defense than we did,” Manning said. “I give them credit for that.”

Manning is now 1-2 in Super Bowls. He still trails his brother Eli, the Giants quarterback, who has won two Super Bowl rings.

“It’s a difficult pill to swallow,” said Manning, adding he would use the bitter disappointment to get better next season.

Manning shattered the league record by throwing for 55 touchdowns during the regular season. He also set a mark with 5,477 yards passing in leading the Denver Broncos to a 13-3 record during a record season when the Broncos scored 606 points.

But in the most important game of the season, Manning could produce just one touchdown and that came with his team trailing 36-0.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo’s latest star — Peyton the Penguin, named for Denver Broncos’ quarterback Peyton Manning — is taking to social media for Sunday’s Super Bowl game.

The newborn rockhopper penguin got his name after the city and the Nebraska Tourism Commission took note of Manning’s repeated use of “Omaha” at the line of scrimmage. Fans can expect to hear him yell, “Omaha! Omaha!” just as often when the Broncos face the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday in the championship Super Bowl matchup.

Now, Manning’s namesake penguin has become “a bit of a celebrity,” zoo director Dennis Pate says.

Zoo officials say Peyton the Penguin is eagerly awaiting the big game on Sunday and will be posting his thoughts and comments about it over the next several days.

Manning Extends Record with 5th AP NFL MVP

Peyton-Manning-Denver-BroncNEW YORK (AP) — Peyton Manning has won his fifth Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player award in a landslide.

The Denver Broncos’ record-setting quarterback, who threw for 55 touchdowns and 5,477 yards in leading the Broncos to the AFC’s best record, earned 49 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league. New England quarterback Tom Brady got the other vote in balloting announced Saturday night.

Manning won his other MVPs with Indianapolis in 2003, ’04, ’08 and ’09. He also was the runner-up last season to Adrian Peterson.

No one else has won more than three NFL MVP awards.

Manning still trails several Hall of Famers for total MVPs in their sport. Wayne Gretzky won nine NHL MVPs, Barry Bonds owns seven in baseball, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar won six in the NBA.

Manning has also won his second Associated Press NFL Offensive Player of the Year award.

The Denver quarterback shattered the league record by throwing for 55 touchdowns. He also set a mark with 5,477 yards passing in leading the Broncos to a 13-3 record, best in the AFC. They play Seattle on Sunday in the Super Bowl.

Broncos executive John Elway accepted the award on Manning’s behalf.

Manning received 33 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league in balloting announced Saturday night. He also won the award in 2004 and was runner-up last year to Adrian Peterson.

This time, running back LeSean McCoy of Philadelphia was second with 10 votes, followed by Kansas City running back Jamaal Charles with four.

Manning’s ‘Omaha!’ Shouts Worth Multimillions in Free Publicity to City, Expert Says

Peyton-Manning-OmahaOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Unless Peyton Manning changes his habits, the Super Bowl-watching world will get to hear “Omaha!” again and again this Sunday.

The Denver Broncos quarterback’s word choice at the line of scrimmage has cast a bright light on the Midwestern city over the past few weeks. Omaha has been mentioned thousands of times on Twitter and in media stories, and visitors have included ESPN and the NFL Network.

A company that monitors the breadth and impact of print, broadcast and social media exposure for about 700 clients says the mentions have been worth $619 million in publicity value to Omaha.

Todd Murphy of Universal Information Services says the free advertising number is based on a formula that takes into account the potential number of people exposed to the message through broadcast, print and web traffic.

Broncos’ Manning Could Keep Going Even With SB Win

Peyton-Manning-Denver-BroncJERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — Peyton Manning might not be ready to call it a career even if he leads the Denver Broncos to a Super Bowl victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

Manning and the AFC champion Broncos arrived in New Jersey on Sunday night for the start of preparations for the big game next week at MetLife Stadium.

The Broncos quarterback, at a news conference aboard the Cornucopia Majesty cruise ship docked outside the team hotel, says he has no plans beyond next Sunday’s Super Bowl, but adds that as of now, he “certainly” wants to continue playing.

Manning, trying to become the first starting QB to win Super Bowls with two teams, says he feels better than he thought he would at this point after undergoing two career-threatening neck surgeries two years ago.

Manning Warns Teammates Not to Let Chance Slip By

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Peyton Manning is the only player in this Super Bowl who has won the big game.

He’s also lost one.

So, he knows both the elation of putting his fingerprints on the Lombardi Trophy and the anguish of watching it slip through his grasp, and he admonished his Denver Broncos teammates not to cut corners as they prepare to face the Seattle Seahawks on Feb. 2.

Receiver Eric Decker says the biggest thing Manning has said is to eliminate distractions.

Manning’s Charity to Get $24,800 for His ‘Omahas’

Peyton-Manning-OmahaOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Peyton Manning’s foundation for at-risk youth will receive a $24,800 donation for all the times he shouted “Omaha!” during the AFC championship game Sunday.

The donations were organized by the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce after Manning’s 44 pre-snap “Omaha!” calls during the Denver Broncos win over San Diego received national attention.

Eight Omaha companies combined to donate $800 to Manning’s “Peyback Foundation” for every time he yelled the city’s name during the Broncos’ victory over the New England Patriots.

The participating companies are ConAgra Foods, First National Bank of Omaha, Mutual of Omaha, Omaha Steaks, Cox Communications, CenturyLink, Union Pacific railroad and DJ’s Dugout Sports Bar & Grill.

Manning Foundation to Earn $500 for Every ‘Omaha’

Peyton-Manning-OmahaOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Peyton Manning’s foundation for at-risk youth will receive a $500 contribution for every time the Denver Broncos’ quarterback shouts “Omaha” during the AFC championship game.

Manning brought national attention to Nebraska’s largest city with his loud “Omaha” pre-snap calls during the Broncos’ playoff win over San Diego last weekend.

Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce president and CEO David Brown announced Thursday that five Omaha-based companies are combining to donate $500 to Manning’s “Peyback Foundation” each time he shouts “Omaha” in Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots.

Manning said “Omaha” 44 times in last week’s game. The same number against the Patriots would be worth $22,000 to his foundation.

The participating companies are ConAgra Foods, First National Bank of Omaha, Mutual of Omaha, Omaha Steaks and Union Pacific Railroad.

Omaha, Omaha

Peyton-Manning-OmahaOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Peyton Manning can’t quit shouting about Nebraska’s largest city.

The Denver Broncos quarterback used the word “Omaha” loudly and often during Sunday’s NFL playoff win over the San Diego Chargers. Its meaning, if there is one, is known only to the Broncos.

It provided unexpected publicity for the city of 427,000, which is perhaps best known as the home of billionaire Warren Buffett. Omaha was a trending topic on Twitter during the game. By one count, Manning uttered “Omaha” 44 times.

Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce president and CEO David Brown says he wants to explore the possibility of hiring Manning to shoot a promotional ad for Omaha, though the quarterback’s fee might be prohibitive.
