Storm To Skate In Hastings, Aid Salvation Army

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – This week the Tri-City Storm will be helping the Salvation Army food pantry in Hastings collect donations, and have planned an outdoor skating event to take place in Libs Park from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7.

Various Storm players will partake in a hockey exhibition during the first part of the skate, before opening things up for a public skate.

The team asks that fans who attend bring food donations for the Salvation Army food pantry. The pantry is critically low, with bare shelves and freezers empty of meat.

Food needs include: Canned meats, i.e., tuna, spam, etc., hamburger meat (preferably in one pound tubes), hamburger helper, macaroni and cheese, soups, and stews. Other non-perishable items will also be accepted.

Tri-City is teaming up with NBC Nebraska’s Tim Jones and Taylor Kilgore for the event, as well as the team’s radio partner, Platte River Radio.

Jones and Kilgore will broadcast live from the park during their 5 and 6 p.m. newscasts.

In addition, the Viaero Event Center will serve as a collection site for food donations during the team’s upcoming home games on Jan. 9 & 10 against the Waterloo Black Hawks. Fans planning on attending either game are encouraged to bring a donation to support the food pantry.

Friday’s game gets underway at 7:30 p.m., while Saturday’s puck drop is scheduled for 7:05.

Two Goals Enough For Lancers To Hold Off Storm

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – The Omaha Lancers (16-8-4) were able to hold off a late charge and defeat the Tri-City Storm (14-10-5) 2-1 in front of a crowd of 4,041 at the Viaero Event Center on Saturday night.

Storm defenseman Mattias Goransson scored the lone tally of the contest for Tri-City, while netminder Alec Dillon made 16 saves to keep his team in the game the whole way.

Omaha has now won nine consecutive games and four of their five meetings with Tri-City this season.

The Storm had lots of chances and pressure in the Lancers’ end, outshooting Omaha 31-18 on the night, but goaltender Kris Oldham let only one puck past him, and earned his fourth victory of the season over Tri-City.

All three goals came in the middle period, with the two squads holding each other off the scoreboard in both the first and third frames.

Lancers’ defenseman Jimmy Schuldt made it 1-0 Omaha with a power play strike at 5:24 of the second for his eighth goal of the season. Assists on the goal went to forwads Anthony Angello and Josh French.

Goransson earned the equalizer during a 2-on-1 with forward Chris Wilkie. Forward Dan Labosky got the second assist on the play, pushing the puck to Wilkie as he took a hit in the neutral zone.

Wilkie then moved in to the Omaha end and out-waited the lone Lancer defenseman, sliding the puck to Goransson and drawing Oldham to his side. The Swedish native hit the back of the net for his fifth goal of the year and his fourth point of the weekend.

However it only took 1:09 for the Lancers to re-take the lead, as forward Louie Rowe hit Nick Rivera in front for a one-timer that beat Dillon.

Tri-City attempted 25 shots in the final period, but just nine made their way through to Oldham.

The Lancers now have 36 total points and sit in second place in the USHL’s Western Conference, while Tri-City has 33 points which is good for third place.

The Storm will host Waterloo for a weekend series on Friday and Saturday. Friday’s game starts at 7:30, while Saturday’s contest gets underway at7:05.

Early Hole Dooms Storm In Sioux Falls

tcstormSIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Tri-City Storm (14-9-5) worked their way back from a big deficit but couldn’t finish the comeback and fell to the Sioux Falls Stampede (15-12-2) by a score of 6-4 on Friday night at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.

In the third, Cody Milan made the game 5-3 with his seventh goal of the year at 12:45. Goransson led the White Lake, Mich. native with a perfect pass into the zone and the goal breathed life into Tri-City in the final minutes.

The Storm then made it 5-4 less than two minutes later on Nardella’s fifth goal of the season. Assists were credited to both Wilkie and Chase Berger.

But the one-goal deficit was as close as the Storm could get before Bellows put the game out of reach with the empty net goal.

Stefanos Lekkas picked up the win for the Stampede in net, making 30 saves. Alec Dillon started the game for Tri-City, but was pulled in favor of Jared Rutledge after allowing two goals in the first. Rutledge finished with 19 stops.

Storm Alumni Update: December

KEARNEY, Neb. – The Tri-City Storm are recognizing former forwards Trevor Mingoia, Cody Murphy and Brad Schierhorn as their alumni of the month in December. Each month during the season, the team will select a group of former players based on their contributions on the ice at the next level.

Mingoia, who was recognized by the Hockey East as its Player of the Week on Nov. 17, has been having a breakout season at Providence College. Through 16 games, Mingoia leads the Friars in scoring with nine goals and seven assists. He also leads the team in shots on goal (53), plus-minus (+6), power play goals (3), and game-winning goals (4).

Most recently, Mingoia scored with 3:46 remaining in regulation to give Providence a 4-3 victory over No. 13 Colgate University on Dec. 9. The junior now has 13 points in his last 10 games.

Last year, in his sophomore season with the Friars, Mingoia had five goals and 10 assists in 26 games, while contributing to his team’s run to the NCAA Tournament.

With the Storm during the 2012-13 season, Mingoia joined the team midway through the year and instantly became a leader on and off the ice. Through 43 games with Tri-City, the Fairport, N.Y. native had 13 goals and 26 assists and finished fifth on the team in scoring.

Murphy was named NCHC Offensive Player of the Week on Dec. 8 after scoring four goals, including his first collegiate hat trick for Miami in a weekend series with Nebraska-Omaha.

The senior has 10 points on five goals and five assists this season, and is currently on a three-game point streak. In 110 games with Miami, Murphy has 23 goals and 26 assists while helping to make his squad one of the best in the NCAA. The Redhawks are currently ranked No. 6 in the country.

The Highwood, Ill. native played two seasons in Kearney from 2009-11, scoring 21 goals and 20 assists.

Schierhorn, a junior at Dartmouth College, earned the spotlight in a 2-0 win over the top team in the country, Boston University, on Nov. 30. The forward scored both goals in the game for his team during a five minute span in the second period and was named ECAC Player of the Week on Dec. 2 for his efforts.

The Anchorage, Alaska native is second on the team in scoring through 11 games with 10 points on four goals and six assists. In 75 career games with the Big Green, Schierhorn has 17 goals and 19 assists.

In two seasons with Tri-City from 2010-12, Schierhorn had 18 goals and 37 assists as one of the leaders on the team.

The Storm have just one more game before the USHL’s holiday break, and Tri-City is preparing to take on Omaha at the Ralston Arena this Friday at 7:35 p.m.

The team returns home on Dec. 27 to face first place Sioux City at 3:05 p.m.
