McCormick’s OT Goal Gives Caps Win Over Storm

tcstormMADISON, Wis. – An overtime-winning goal by forward Sam McCormick sent the Madison Capitols fans home happy on Saturday night with a 4-3 defeat of the Tri-City Storm (6-3-2) at the Alliant Energy Center.

Storm forward Mason Appleton, a Green Bay, Wis. native, scored twice for Tri-City in the loss, while forward Chris Wilkie added a power play goal. The Storm have now scored power play goals in seven consecutive games.

Tri-City earned just one point in the standings over the weekend, after falling to the Capitols 5-4 on Friday night in the teams’ first ever meeting.

After scoring a goal 11 seconds into Friday night’s game, Madison once again took the early lead on Saturday with a goal at the 2:11 mark of the opening period by forward Marco Richter.

Later in the period, off the opening face-off to the Storm’s first power play opportunity of the game, the Capitols forced the puck out of the zone and took control going the other way. A one-timer from Freddy Gerard to center Ryan Lohin gave the Capitols a short-handed goal and a 2-0 lead.

Lohin’s tally was his third of the weekend, and sent Madison into the first intermission with a two-goal advantage.

The Storm fought back in the second period, scoring the only goal of the frame when Appleton won an offensive zone faceoff to start possession in the Caps’ zone.

Forward Nolan Aibel had a great chance on the doorstep, and stuck with the play by getting the puck to Appleton. The center then found the net for his first goal of the night to make it 2-1.

Appleton then tied the game at 3:24 of the third, again finding a loose puck in front of the Madison net and finding a way to get it past Capitols’ netminder Garrett Metcalf.

Tri-City took their first lead of the weekend on Wilkie’s power play goal at 6:24 of the final period. Forward Jake Wahlin found the Omaha native for his seventh goal of the season and the Storm had a 3-2 edge.

But Madison’s Will Johnson evened things back up, scoring an even strength goal with just five minutes to go in the game that forced overtime.

In the extra session, a turnover in the Storm’s own zone allowed forward Mitch Hults to find McCormick wide open in front to beat Tri-City netminder Blake Weyrick for the game-winner.

Weyrick made his second start of the season in between the pipes for the Storm, making 23 saves in the loss.

Metcalf won his second decision of the weekend, making 34 saves for Madison. Tri-City outshot the Capitols 37-27 in the game.

The Storm will return home to take on the Muskegon Lumberjacks in a weekend series Nov. 7-8 at the Viaero Event Center in Kearney. Friday night’s game starts at 7:30 p.m., while Saturday’s puck drop is scheduled for 7:05.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Wade Allison, Chase Hatcher, and Aleksi Ainali along with defenseman Jason Krych.

Capitols Edge Storm In First Ever Meeting

tcstormMADISON, Wis. – The Tri-City Storm (6-3-1) played catch-up for most of the night and fell short, losing 5-4 to the Madison Capitols (2-5-2) in the teams’ first ever meeting at the Alliant Energy Center on Friday night.

Four different Storm forwards scored in the loss, including Nick Master, Nolan Aibel, Chris Wilkie and Chase Berger. For Aibel, the tally was his first of the season, while Wilkie got his team-leading sixth of the year.

The Capitols took the lead on the first shift of the game, scoring just 11 seconds into the contest on a shot by forward Guillaume Leclerc.

Madison held the early advantage until late in the period when Master stole a puck at the top of the offensive zone and beat netminder Darren Smith up high with a wrist shot to tie things at 1-1.

After the first intermission, the Capitols once again regained the lead with an early goal at 1:19 of the middle frame. Forward Ryan Lohin gave Madison a 2-1 lead, his first of two tallies in the period.

Tri-City tied things up again under a minute later. During a delayed penalty, forward Matthew Freytag found Aibel in front for a redirection. The tally was the Brookville, N.Y. native’s second in USHL play, after scoring one goal during the 2013-14 season.

Minutes later, forward Will Johnson gave Madison a 3-2 lead with his third goal of the season before Lohin made it 4-2 with his second tally to open up the game.

Towards the close of the second period, Wilkie capitalized on a power play just nine seconds into the man-advantage. Forward Jake Wahlin found the Omaha native open in the high-slot and Wilkie shot the puck into the lower left corner of the net to make it a 4-3 game.

Berger tied things back up for the third time with his second goal of the season just 2:59 into the final period. After the goal, the Capitols pulled Smith in favor of backup goaltender Garrett Metcalf.

But the Capitals regained the lead less than a minute later on a goal by Sam McCormick and held on for good.

Metcalf stopped all 12 shots that came his way after replacing Smith, earning the victory for Madison.

Alec Dillon got the start in net for Tri-City and made 29 saves in the loss. The Storm outshot Madison 35-34 on the night.

The two clubs will finish their weekend series in Madison on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.

Pawloski Shuts Door On Storm

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – Despite recording 57 shots on net through three periods and overtime, the Tri-City Storm (4-2-1) came up short to the Green Bay Gamblers (3-3-0), losing 4-3 in a six-round shootout at the Viaero Event Center Saturday afternoon.

Forward Nick Master scored a power play goal for Tri-City, while defenseman Bobby Nardella and forward Jake Wahlin each picked up their first goals of the season in the loss.

Green Bay goaltender Jason Pawloski was outstanding in the contest, making 54 saves and stopping five of six shooters from Tri-City in the shootout.

The Storm took the lead in the first period on Master’s second goal of the season. The UMass-Lowell commit found a rebound in front and made it 1-0 early on. The goal was the eighth power play strike for Tri-City on the season, who started the day with the top power play conversion percentage in the league.

It was a lopsided opening period, with the Storm earning four power play opportunities and outshooting Green Bay 20-6. But Pawloski kept the Gamblers in the game, shutting down some great Tri-City chances.

In the middle frame, Green Bay scored twice to take a 2-1 lead. Forwards Christopher Brown and Ryan Smith had the goals for the Gamblers, and gave the team their first lead of the weekend.

Defenseman Vili Saarijarvi scored at 7:57 of the third for Green Bay, pushing the lead to 3-1.

But the Storm turned things around and got back in the game with goals from Nardella and Wahlin. 59 seconds after Saarijarvi made it 3-1, Nardella responded, scoring on a pass from forward Chris Wilkie to cut the Green Bay lead to 3-2.

Less than five minutes later, Wahlin found the back of the net to tie the game at 3-3. Defensemen Tory Dello and Jalen Schulz recorded assists on the tying tally and the teams were all knotted up.

Just like they did in the first period, Tri-City recorded 20 shots on net in the third, while Green Bay had just three. But neither team could find a winning tally, and the game went to overtime.

After a scoreless OT, defenseman Anthony Walsh and forward Mitch Snyder beat Storm netminder Alec Dillon in the shootout to get the win for the Gamblers.

The lone shootout goal for Tri-City was scored by Cody Milan.

Dillon made 20 saves for the Storm in defeat, continuing his impressive start in the USHL.

Tri-City will head on the road to face Team USA in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Friday and Saturday next weekend. Both games will start at 6:00 p.m. CST.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Aleksi Ainali, Nolan Aibel and Wade Allison, along with defenseman Cameron Spicer and goaltender Blake Weyrick…
