Storm Win Big In Front Of Sell Out Crowd

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – In front of a sell out crowd of 4,256, the Tri-City Storm (25-11-5) scored three goals in the opening period and held on to defeat the Omaha Lancers (22-13-5) by a score of 5-1 on Friday night at the Viaero Event Center.

Forward Nick Master scored twice in the win, while captain Garrett Gamez had a goal and an assist and defenseman Bobby Nardella had three helpers.

Alec Dillon started the game between the pipes for the Storm, but was forced to leave midway through the second period due to injury. Jared Rutledge shut the door in relief, preserving the early Tri-City lead. Both netminders finished the game with 13 saves.

Storm forward Chris Wilkie opened the scoring at 7:08 of the first, scoring his 24th goal of the season on the power play with a shot through traffic that got by Omaha goalie Zach Driscoll. Assists on the tally went to Mason Appleton and Nardella.

The defenseman started the play by intercepting a pass in neutral ice and moving into the Omaha zone. After finding Appleton, the Green Bay, Wis. native had room to shoot, but elected to pass down low to Gamez, who tapped the puck in for the score.

Master gave Tri-City insurance in the middle period, scoring his second of the night and 15th of the season unassisted on a breakaway.

Storm forward Kyle Eastman sealed the victory with an unassisted empty net goal late in the third period. The tally was the Angola, N.Y. native’s second of the season.

With the win, the Storm have a home record of 15-3-2 in 20 contests at the Viaero Event Center this season.

Tri-City still has hold of second place in the USHL’s Western Conference with 55 total points. They remain four points behind first-place Sioux City.

Storm Partner With Children’s Heart Foundation

Children's Heart Foundation Nebraska Chapter CHFKEARNEY, Neb. – On Friday night, the Children’s Heart Foundation and the Tri-City Storm are coming together to be part of Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week.

Many families in the Tri-Cities have been affected by Congenital Heart Defects (CHD). The Children’s Heart Foundation is a non-profit organization solely focused on funding research for CHD.

Operated fully by volunteers, all funds raised will go towards the most promising research to advance the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of congenital heart defects.

“Congenital Heart Defect Awareness week is Feb. 7-14, but we need to remember these families that are affected every day of the year,” said Kristi Unick, President of the Nebraska Chapter of the Children’s Heart Foundation. “Creating awareness of CHD will in return assist us in raising funds for our research.”

The Children’s Heart Foundation is selling discounted adult tickets for $12 to Friday’s game with the Omaha Lancers, with the Storm providing a donation on each of the sold seats.

You can purchase your discounted tickets by calling 402.875.0231 or email chfne@childrensheartfoundation.org. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

“We saw this as a win-win project and an organization to align our brand,” said Storm President Greg Shea. “As a result, over 200 supporters will be in attendance on Fridaynight.”

One in 100 babies are born with a CHD, over 40,000 children per year. Congenital heart defects are common and deadly, yet CHD research is grossly under-funded relative to the prevalence of the disease. More than 50 percent of children born with a CHD will require at least one invasive surgery in their lifetime.

Storm Raise Over $16,000 For Team Jack Foundation

Jack Hoffman Tri-City StormKEARNEY, Neb. – Tri-City Storm fans raised over $16,000 for the Team Jack Foundation in the month of January.

Funds were collected through t-shirt sales, a silent auction of specialty game-worn jerseys and January’s Jerseys For A Cause program.

T-shirt sales began in December and continued through Team Jack Night on Jan. 24, when the Storm wore the specialty jerseys in a 4-2 win over the Sioux Falls Stampede.

Over $10,000 was collected from the silent auction of uniforms during the contest.

Presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska, Jerseys For A Cause benefits a different organization each month. The full list of participants also includes Relay For Life, The Make-A-Wish Foundation, Phelps Memorial Hospital, Mary Lanning Hospital, Stay In The Game and SAFE Kids.

“Once again, Storm fans came through and supported with great volume a month-long project to raise both money and awareness for the Team Jack Foundation,” said Team President Greg Shea.

“We’re so pleased to have been able to play a small part in what has become a major brand in the fight against pediatric brain cancer.”

The Storm now hit the road for a three-game trip starting Friday against the Lincoln Stars at 7:05 p.m.

Storm Trade For Defenseman Pedrie

Vince Pedrie
Vince Pedrie

KEARNEY, Neb. – Tri-City Storm Head Coach Jim Hulton announced the acquisition of defenseman Vince Pedrie from the Bloomington ThunderSunday.

The blueliner has had a breakout season with the Thunder, scoring nine goals and assisting on 13 others in 39 games. Pedrie is one of the most veteran players in the league, having played in 171 regular season games over four USHL seasons with the Omaha Lancers, Indiana Ice and Thunder.

Last season in Indiana, Pedrie was part of the Clark Cup championship roster. Appearing in 36 games, the Apple Valley, Minn. native had five goals and nine assists with a +12 rating.

“We’re excited to add Vince in to our team,” Hulton said. He brings a number of valuable elements, first and foremost championship experience. He’s a 200 foot player, equally as adequate in the defensive zone as he is with the puck. Offensively, he’s another key element on a power play, and he’s a veteran who can kill penalties.”

In exchange for Pedrie, the Storm have traded defenseman Cameron Spicer to Bloomington along with affiliate forward Joe Abate and second round draft picks in both Phase I and Phase II of the 2015 USHL Draft.

Spicer played in 29 games for Tri-City on the blue line, scoring one goal and adding three assists.

“There’s always a cost to improving your team and in order to acquire Vince we had to give up Cameron,” Hulton said. “It’s a complement to Cam that he was a sought after player by Bloomington and he’s been a very good member of our team, a great teammate, and he’s made huge strides on the ice to become a dependable steady player. I think he’s got a bright future ahead of him.”

In addition to Pedrie, Tri-City acquired Bloomington’s eighth round pick in Phase II of the 2016 USHL Draft.

“Vince really brings all aspects to the table and we felt this was too good a deal to pass up,” Hulton said. “When you get down to the stretch run, age and experience become very important elements of any team and we think with our recent play, we need to keep moving upwards and onwards.”

Pedrie, who is 21 years of age, is committed to play collegiately at Penn State this fall.

The Storm hit the road for a three-game trip starting Friday against the Lincoln Stars at 7:05 p.m.

Storm Hold On For 5-4 Shootout Win

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – Despite losing a four-goal lead, the Tri-City Storm (22-10-5) prevailed in a shootout and defeated the Sioux Falls Stampede (18-15-5) for their eighth consecutive victory in front of 3,551 fans at the Viaero Event Center on Saturday night.

Storm forwards Garrett Gamez and Nick Master each had a goal and an assist in regulation, before both Chris Wilkie and Cody Milan converted in the shootout to help claim the extra point.

Alec Dillon made the start for Tri-City and picked up the win, making 24 saves and two extra stops in the shootout.

Matthew Freytag put the Storm ahead 1-0 in the first period, scoring his 11th goal of the season while Tri-City was on their first power play opportunity. The Wayzata, Minn. native found a rebound in front and swept it in with assists from defensemen Tory Dello and Mattias Goransson.

Minutes later, Gamez scored his first goal since returning from injury, ripping a wrist shot past Sioux Falls netminder Stefanos Lekkas to make it 2-0. Nick Master and Jalen Schulz were credited with assists on the captain’s eighth goal of the season.

Master widened the lead in the middle period, scoring his 13th of the season and sixth in his last five games. The Broomall, Penn. native found space and beat Lekkas with assists from Gamez and defenseman Jason Krych.

Gamez now has 22 points this season in 22 games on eight goals and 14 assists. For Krych, the assist was his first of the season in his 23rd game.

Chase Berger made it 4-0 Tri-City later in the second when he finished off a perfect tic-tac-toe passing play with a redirection into the net. Dan Labosky started the rush and brought the puck in the zone. He then passed across the ice to Joel Herbert, who found Berger streaking to the net for the deflection.

The momentum took a turn for the worse later in the second as Sioux Falls began its comeback. Kieffer Bellows scored the first of his three tallies on the night at 15:53 of the middle period to make it 4-1 at the second intermission.

Then in the third, the Stampede got a breakaway goal from Daniel Warpecha before two more tallies from Bellows with an extra attacker on the ice in the final minutes to tie the game and force overtime.

Bellows scored again in the first round of the shootout, but Alec Dillon shut the door on Troy Loggins and Logan O’Connor to give Tri-City the victory.

Tri-City remains in second place in the USHL’s Western Conference with 49 total points.

The Storm hit the road for a three-game trip starting Friday against the Lincoln Stars at 7:05 p.m.
