Huskers Sweep Indiana for Seventh Straight Win

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersBLOOMINGTON, IND. – The No. 11 Nebraska volleyball team took care of business in a 25-11, 25-20, 26-24 sweep at Indiana Wednesday night.

With their seventh straight win, the Huskers improved to 19-7 overall and 13-4 in the Big Ten. NU swept both matches this season against the Hoosiers, who dropped to 15-14 overall and 6-11 in the Big Ten.

Kelsey Fien led a balanced attack with 12 kills and a .440 hitting percentage. Amber Rolfzen had 10 kills and hit .562, and Kadie Rolfzen had 10 kills and 10 digs for her second straight double-double. Annika Albrecht also had 10 digs. Cecilia Hall had five kills and three blocks, and Mary Pollmiller had 33 assists and four blocks with five digs.

Nebraska hit .305 and held Indiana to .114, marking the seventh straight opponent NU has held under .200 hitting. The Huskers outblocked the Hoosiers 10-5 and outdug them 41 to 39. NU has not been outdug in its seven-match win streak.

The Huskers came out of the gates on fire, taking the first set 25-11 for the largest margin of victory in a set since Sept. 13 against Colgate (25-9). Nebraska got four kills on five swings from Amber Rolfzen and three kills from Fien. The Huskers hit .444 and held Indiana to -.067. NU went up 5-0 and never looked back.

In set two, Nebraska opened up a 9-3 lead after a stuff from Melanie Keil and Amber Rolfzen. NU went up 15-8, but Indiana got within 20-15 on the tough serve of Taylor Lebo, who ranks second in the Big Ten in aces. A Kadie Rolfzen kill ended the run and put NU up 21-15.

NU fell behind 6-3 in the third set before kills by Haggerty and Fien, and then a stuff by Pollmiller and Haggerty to tie the set 6-6. Three straight kills by Fien put the Huskers up 10-7 before an Indiana attacking error made it 11-7. Indiana needed a timeout to halt the Huskers’ 8-1 run. Indiana pulled within 13-12 before committing a ball-handling error. NU went up 17-14 on a combo block by Fien and Haggerty, but the Hoosiers rallied to get within 17-17 with Lebo at the service line. The Huskers took a timeout and regained the 18-17 lead on a kill by Fien in NU’s first attack after the break. The teams went back and forth, and Indiana tied the set at 24-24 and looked to threaten with their best server Lebo on the line. But Fien got the immediate sideout with her 12th kill, and the Huskers won 26-24 after IU hit long.

Nebraska returns home to host Michigan on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The Huskers will honor their lone senior, Pollmiller, at the match.

The Huskers improved to 18-7 overall and 12-4 in the Big Ten, finishing a stretch of four straight home matches unbeaten. Maryland dropped to 9-18 overall and 2-14 in the Big Ten in its first trip to Lincoln as a Big Ten opponent. While the Huskers extended their win streak to six, the Terrapins saw their losing streak reach six.

Kelsey Fien led the Huskers with a career-high 18 kills, her fourth straight match with double-digit kills. Kadie Rolfzen had 15 kills and 10 digs while hitting .355. Amber Rolfzen had six kills and five blocks, and Cecilia Hall had five kills and seven blocks. Meghan Haggerty added five kills and five blocks. Emily Fraik had 13 kills to lead Maryland, while Ashleigh Crutcher had 12.

Nebraska outhit the Terrapins .277 to .187. The Huskers have now held six straight Big Ten foes under .200 hitting for the first time since 2011. The Huskers also outblocked the Terrapins 12-8 and outdug them 53-39. The Huskers had five aces with Townsend registering three and Ethridge two.

Nebraska took an 8-4 lead in the first set courtesy of an Amber Rolfzen kill, Townsend ace and a Haggerty kill. The Huskers then built a 15-7 lead by the media timeout with the second Amber Rolfzen/Hall block of the set and Fien’s fourth kill. An Ethridge ace made it 23-13, and the Huskers won 25-17 after Maryland fought off four set points. Fien had seven kills in the set to lead the Huskers to .387 hitting. Maryland hit .188.

With set two tied 6-6, Nebraska rattled off an 8-1 run to take control. NU scored three straight on a bad set by Maryland, kill by Pollmiller and Townsend’s second ace of the day to go up 9-6. After Maryland cut it to 9-7, the Huskers went ahead 14-7 with five more points. Fien and Kadie Rolfzen each had kills, and Haggerty combined for blocks with Pollmiller and Fien to give the Huskers a seven-point edge. The Huskers pulled away down the stretch to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-14 victory. NU hit .273 in the frame while holding the Terrapins to .000.

The Huskers started slow out of the gate in set three, falling behind 4-1. NU pulled within 7-5 on kills by Haggerty and Fien, but the Terrapins went up 13-5 with a 6-0 run, which Fien ended with back-to-back kills to trim the deficit to 13-7. But Maryland continued to fend off the Huskers and extended the lead to 17-8 with three kills in a row from Fraik. Trailing 19-11, the Huskers got kills by Kadie Rolfzen and Pollmiller around Townsend’s third ace to get within 19-14. But the next three points went to Maryland, and the Terrapins came away with the 25-18 win. NU hit just .062 in the third set, while Maryland had a .423 attacking percentage.

A kill by Fien and two blocks by Amber Rolfzen and Hall helped put the Huskers up 5-1 early in the fourth. But Maryland cut it to 9-8 with a 6-1 run to force a Husker timeout. Out of the break, Fien and Hall recorded kills, and an ace by Ethridge to put the Huskers up 12-8. The Terrapins closed the gap to 13-12, however, before consecutive kills by Amber Rolfzen made it 15-12 Nebraska. Another Amber Rolfzen kill put NU up 17-13. After Maryland got within 17-15, a Terrapin service error and three consecutive kills from Kadie Rolfzen made it 21-15 Huskers. The Huskers closed out the 25-18 win by hitting .435 in the fourth set with just three attacking errors.

Nebraska will visit Indiana for a 6 p.m. (CT) match on Wednesday on BTN Plus.

Huskers Rally Past Spartans for Fifth Straight Win

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersLINCOLN – The 11th-ranked Nebraska volleyball team came back after dropping the first set to Michigan State to win 3-1 (20-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-23) Wednesday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center before the 215th consecutive sellout crowd.

Kelsey Fien led the Huskers (17-7, 11-4 Big Ten) to their fifth straight win with 17 kills, matching her career high. Fien hit .412 on the night and posted her first 13 kills without an error. Kadie Rolfzen added 15 kills, and Amber Rolfzen had seven kills and five blocks. NU got big contributions from its back row as Justine Wong-Orantes (18), Annika Albrecht (14) and Sydney Townsend (nine) combined for 41 of Nebraska’s 62 digs on the night. Mary Pollmiller had 44 assists, and Melanie Keil had four kills and four blocks while hitting .444 off the bench.

Chloe Reinig led Michigan State (13-13, 6-9 Big Ten) with 13 kills. NU outhit MSU .196 to .147, while the Spartans had a slight 12-11 edge in blocks. The Spartans hit .400 in the first set but hit just .078 the rest of the match.

Michigan State built a 12-3 lead after an 8-0 run in the first set behind three kills and two blocks from Jazimine White. The Huskers fought back to get within 13-11, but Michigan State answered with a 3-0 spurt to go back up 16-11. NU then pulled within 17-16 with four straight points on kills by Amber Rolfzen and Cecilia Hall, and two service aces by Albrecht. Out of a timeout, Michigan State went up 19-16 and extended the lead to 22-17 before finishing out the set 25-20. The Spartans hit .400 in the frame, while NU hit .212 and committed seven attacking errors, one more than its match total against Indiana.

Set two did not begin much better for the Huskers, as Michigan State opened up a 6-1 lead with three blocks to open the set. The Huskers immediately erased that though with a 6-0 spurt to go up 7-6 for their first lead of the match. Kadie Rolfzen had two kills to get NU back in it, and Amber Rolfzen and Keil combined for a momentum-swinging block. The teams battled back and forth, but the Spartans claimed a 16-14 lead with a three-point run to force a Husker timeout. Pollmiller then set Amber Rolfzen for a kill, and MSU hit long to even the set 16-16. Back-to-back MSU attack errors put NU up 20-18. Leading 22-20, the Huskers got the final three points of the set on kills by Fien and Kadie Rolfzen and a block by Amber Rolfzen and Keil. The Huskers hit just .135, but had four blocks after none in the first set to hold the Spartans to .000 hitting in the second set. MSU had 12 errors after just three in the first set.

The Huskers went up 6-3 early in the third, but Michigan State tied it 6-6. The teams went back and forth until back-to-back solo stuffs by Kadie Rolfzen and Haggerty gave the Huskers a 13-10 advantage. A solo stuff by Pollmiller and a Spartan net violation and attacking error gave the Huskers an 18-13 cushion. Keil swatted down a Spartan overdig for a 22-16 Husker lead. Haggerty’s kill to the back corner gave NU set point at 24-20, and the Huskers wrapped up the set with Albrecht’s first kill of the match. NU hit .306 in the third set and had four more blocks. Michigan State hit .149 with eight attacking errors.

The Huskers trailed 6-2 in the fourth set before an MSU service error, two blocks by Amber Rolfzen (one with Haggerty) and a kill by Kadie Rolfzen tied it 6-6. NU then pushed the run to 7-0 for a 9-6 lead after back-to-back MSU hitting errors and a Kadie Rolfzen kill. Leading 10-9, the Huskers gained separation with a 6-1 run to go up 16-10. Fien had three kills in that span. The Spartans rallied to get within 22-21 after an ace by Rachel Minarick. But Fien’s 17th kill made it 23-21 Huskers. Nebraska took the match after a combo block by Amber Rolfzen and Keil.

Nebraska finishes its four-match home stretch on Sunday at 2 p.m. against Maryland on NET.

Huskers Add Four Talents for 2015

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersLincoln – Nebraska volleyball head coach John Cook announced the 2015 Husker newcomers on National Letter of Intent Signing Day Wednesday. Mikaela Foecke, Kenzie Maloney, Tiani Reeves and Brooke Smith will all join the Husker program as freshmen next season.

“We could not be more excited to get the 2015 class on campus,” Cook said. “They provide depth at all positions and should expect to compete for significant playing time. All four athletes are great competitors who are used to winning and competing at a high level. They are all great students and leaders on their teams and in their communities, so we believe that they will have a great impact in our life skills program and as future leaders on our team.”

Mikaela Foecke, 6-3, MB/OH, Fort Madison, Iowa (Holy Trinity Catholic)
Mikaela Foecke (pronounced FECK-ee) will join the Huskers from Holy Trinity Catholic High School in Fort Madison, Iowa. Foecke was one of the country’s most highly touted recruits, rated the No. 2 prospect according to PrepVolleyball.com. Foecke earned MaxPreps 2013 Junior Volleyball Player of the Year honors after averaging more than six kills per set as a junior and leading Holy Trinity to a 45-6 record and the Iowa Class 1A state championship match.

Foecke, 6-3, is capable of playing every attacking position. She was the Iowa Gatorade Player of the Year and Iowa Girls Coaches Association Player of the Year last season, and she was named to MaxPreps’ Preseason All-American Volleyball Team prior to her senior season. Last week, Foecke was named an Under Armour First-Team All-American. She was a member of the USA 20-and-Under National Team as a 17-year-old, winning gold at the Norceca Championship in Guatemala last summer.

Foecke led the state of Iowa in kills as a sophomore (5.43 per set), junior (6.08 per set) and is on pace to do so again as a senior (6.35 per set). She is hitting .635 this season and has become an all-around force with 369 career service aces and 470 blocks. She played club volleyball with Club Fusion.

Coach Cook on Foecke: “Mikaela Foecke is the type of player that was made for the Nebraska volleyball program. She is a small-town Iowa kid who has an outstanding work ethic and attitude. She has one of the most powerful arms in the 2015 class, and we will expect her to contribute to the team right away as a freshman. Most of her experience is at middle blocker, but she is talented and athletic enough to play multiple spots on the floor. Mikaela has been a starter on the U.S. Youth National Team, as well as on the Junior National Team, so she has plenty of experience on the ‘big stage’.”

Kenzie Maloney, 5-8, DS/L, Louisville, Ky. (Assumption)
Kenzie Maloney joins the Huskers as a defensive specialist/libero from Assumption High School in Louisville, Ky. Maloney was named an Under Armour Second-Team All-American last week, as well as the Kentucky Seventh Region Player of the Year this season. She is rated as the top libero by PrepVolleyball.com and the No. 24 overall prospect.

The 5-8 Maloney helped lead Assumption to three straight state championships from 2011-13 and was a Kentucky 3-A first-team all-state pick. In her sophomore season in 2012, Assumption finished 41-2 with a No. 5 national ranking.

Along with Foecke, Malone was a starter on the U.S. Youth National Team that won a silver medal in the Youth World Championships in 2013. Maloney played club volleyball for KIVA and developed a reputation as an outstanding athlete who can cover the whole court.

Coach Cook on Maloney: “I have had the opportunity to see Kenzie develop since she was 13 years old playing club at KIVA. From the first day I saw her, I knew she was going to be something special. Her athletic ability and smoothness as a player has developed her into the top-ranked libero of the 2015 class. Kenzie knew Nebraska was the place for her within 15 minutes of her visit, and we could not be more excited to see what she will bring to the culture of our program. Kenzie was a teammate of Mikaela Foecke and a starter on the U.S. Youth National Team in 2013, and that experience can only help her transition to big-time college volleyball.”

Tiani Reeves, 6-1, MB/OH, Gothenburg, Neb. (Gothenburg)
Tiani Reeves joins the Huskers from Gothenburg High School in central Nebraska. Reeves was named an Under Armour Third-Team All-American last week. As a junior, the 6-1 middle blocker/outside hitter amassed 369 kills and hit .350 for the Swedes and was a Lincoln Journal Star first-team Super-State pick. She helped Gothenburg finish 27-5 last season and displayed one of the best reaches in Nebraska high school volleyball history.

Reeves played club volleyball for Nebraska ONE and was a standout track and field athlete, winning the Class B long jump and triple jump state titles, while finishing second in the 200 meters. Reeves also competed in the track and field Junior Olympics

Coach Cook on Reeves: “Tiani Reeves is one of the best athletes in the state. Originally it looked like Tiani would do track at the collegiate level, as she is an outstanding track athlete on the high school and national level. So we feel blessed to get a heck of an athlete that we can develop into a great volleyball player. This summer Tiani was one of the best athletes at our Elite camp and blew the entire coaching staff away by the level of her improvement with the short amount of time she has been focusing on volleyball.”

Brooke Smith, 5-10, S, Weatherford, Texas (Azle)
Brooke Smith joins the Huskers from Azle High School in Weatherford, Texas. Smith is the lone setter in the Huskers’ 2015 class. She will provide depth behind Kelly Hunter, the only other setter on the Huskers’ roster for next season. Smith led Azle High to a 20-16 record in 2013 and helped her Tejas Volleyball club reach the Junior Olympics this summer.

Smith is a three-time first-team all-district selection and was named the district newcomer of the year, two-time district server of the year and three-time MVP of her varsity squad.

Coach Cook on Smith: “Brooke Smith rounds out our 2015 class and will fill a much needed position at setter (with the only setter on the roster for next season being Kelly Hunter). She is a great athlete and fiery competitor who we can’t wait to get in our gym and see compete. Her mother, Janine, was a national champion volleyball player at the University of Texas and was the head coach at UT-Arlington for 10 years. Her father, Warren, was a pole vaulter and decathlete at Texas, and Brooke is also a great pole vaulter. Brooke’s aunt (Jill Gremmel) was also an all-Big 12 setter. So she has some tremendous bloodlines, and we’re fortunate that she wants to be a part of our program.”

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersLincoln – The No. 13 Nebraska volleyball team cruised to its fourth straight sweep with a 25-14, 25-17, 25-12 triumph over Indiana Saturday before 8,462 fans wearing white for “White Out” night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

The Huskers’ fourth straight win put them at 16-7 overall and 10-4 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers fell to 14-12 overall and 5-9 in the Big Ten.

Kelsey Fien led NU with 11 kills and hit a career-best .526. Kadie Rolfzen had nine kills and Amber Rolfzen added six while hitting .667. Mary Pollmiller had a season-best seven kills on nine attacks to go with 24 assists, as she kept the Indiana defense off balance all night.

The Huskers hit a season-high .525 for the match with their fewest errors all season (six). NU hit a season-best .833 in the first set and .714 in the third set. NU committed no errors in the first and third sets after entering the match with one error-free set all season, against Denver on Sept. 12. The Huskers were just as strong defensively, holding Indiana to a -.013 hitting percentage for the match, its lowest output of the season.

Nebraska came out firing on all cylinders and built a 9-4 lead in set one with three kills by Pollmiller on three attacks. Indiana got within 11-7, but an Amber Rolfzen kill and three straight IU attacking errors led to a 15-7 Husker advantage. The Huskers won 25-14, finishing with a season-best .833 hitting percentage (15 kills on 18 attacks). The Hoosiers hit just .042.

Indiana forced a Husker timeout in the second set by taking a 7-5 lead with a four-point run. But afer the break, Kadie Rolfzen terminated and Pollmiller made an acrobatic play to keep a ball alive before Meghan Haggerty stuffed the Hoosiers to tie it 7-7. Indiana then hit long, and Haggerty and Kadie Rolfzen combined for a block to put the Big Red up 9-7, a lead they would not surrender. Kills by Fien and Pollmiller, followed by an IU attack error made it 14-10 Huskers. Nebraska closed the set on a 10-4 run to win it 25-17. Although the Huskers cooled off a bit and hit .241 in the second set, they held Indiana to a -.067 hitting percentage in the set.

The Huskers came out for the third set with sweep in mind, bolting to a 4-0 lead before an Indiana timeout. Pollmiller served up an opening ace, and Cecilia Hall and Amber Rolfzen combined for a block to set the tone. Leading 13-8, the Huskers finished the match on a 12-4 run for the 25-12 clincher. NU needed just 10 kills in the set while committing no errors for the second time on the night. Indiana committed 10 errors on 24 attacks as the Hoosiers struggled to hit around the Husker blockers.
