Big Night For North Platte Hoops: Irish Win District, While Dawgs Clinch Wild Card

For the first time since 1934, the North Platte Bulldogs and St. Patrick’s Irish boys basketball teams are both going to the state tournament. The Irish won their way into the Class C2 field by defeating Hemingford 51-43 in the C2-6 district final in Sidney. Joseph Clinch scored 17 points and Mark Mayfield added 15 points, and the Irish sunk 12 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off a late Bobcats charge. The Irish are headed to state for the third straight season and the eleventh time overall. The Dawgs learned they would be the Class A Wild Card after the top five seeds in the class all won their district finals last night. It will be North Platte’s 37th trip to the state tourney, and their first since Danny Woodhead led the way to Lincoln in 2004. ESPN Radio 1410 will have coverage of the Dawgs and the Irish from the state tournament next Thursday.
