Police Accuse Five of Spreading Birdseed on Beatrice Football Field

beatrice_pub_scholols(AP) — Police cited five people in connection with the spreading of 100 pounds of birdseed on Beatrice High School’s artificial turf football field.

The five people turned themselves into police and received misdemeanor citations Tuesday.

They are one 18-year-old, three 16-year-olds and a 17-year-old. Police are seeking another teen believed to be involved.

The teens told police they dumped the birdseed because they thought it would be funny to see birds covering the field.

Some seed was vacuumed up, but much of it got into the fibers of the turf and could force the replacement of crumb rubber that supports the turf.

Police Chief Bruce Lang says the teens were charged with misdemeanors because damage isn’t expected to top the $1,500 threshold for a felony.

NE Lawmakers Vote to Strike ‘R-Word’ from State Law

ne-legislature-13(AP) — Nebraska lawmakers have voted to strike all references to the “R-word” from state law.

The bill that won final legislative approval on Wednesday would take the term “mental retardation” off the books. In its place, Nebraska law would use phrases like “intellectual disability” and “developmental disability.”

Nebraska would join the federal government and more than 40 states in eliminating all derivatives of “retardation,” which advocates have termed “the R-word.” Supporters of the bill say the phrase “mental retardation” started as a medical term, but has since turned into demeaning slang.

The original proposal by Sen. Colby Coash, of Lincoln, was folded into another bill. It passed with a 46-0 vote.

Proposed Scottsbluff Meat Packing Plant to Focus on South Korea

meat-packing-plant(AP) — A company manager says the unique business model of a proposed Scottsbluff beef processing plant includes its eventual focus on the South Korean market.

Keith DeHaan of Future Food Energy LLC told members of the Scottsbluff-Gering Rotary Club on Tuesday that the plant investors are in South Korea. He says they’re looking for a higher quality of beef than what is generally sold in the United States.

The company is proposing to build its plant on 43 acres it’s offered to buy from the city of Scottsbluff. DeHaan says the investors want to construct their own beef processing plant so they maintain control over the product and the plant culture.

Company plans include an initial workforce of about 350 people that could grow to 600 people at peak production.
