No. 23 Huskers Out to Settle Score Against Bruins

UNLLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Bo Pelini doesn’t mind if his Huskers have some extra incentive going into Saturday’s game against No. 16 UCLA.

Last year, the Huskers lost 36-30 in Los Angeles and gave up 653 yards — the second-most ever against aNebraska defense.

Pelini said Monday he’s sure his team is always motivated.

The No. 23 Huskers said they were caught off-guard by the 2012 Bruins, who had a new coach in Jim Mora and new quarterback in Brett Hundley.

Senior defensive back Ciante Evans said besides Ohio State’s Braxton Miller, Hundley is the best quarterback he’s faced.

Beck Wants Huskers to Finish vs. UCLA

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb.-  The Nebraska football team started its game three preparations for its showdown against UCLA Saturdayafternoon during a 90-minute practice held inside the Hawks Center and outside at the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Fields. The Huskers practiced in shorts and helmets Monday afternoon.

Offensive Coordinator Tim Beck addressed the media after practice, noting that Monday marked a good start to the week for the NU football team.

“We had a really good practice today. I was pleased with how the guys came out today and we got some of the base stuff we wanted to look at today done,” Beck said.

Much has been said about the Saturday showdown versus the Bruins, in a rematch of last year’s 36-30 loss in Pasadena. Beck mentioned that he wants the Huskers to do the little things right, and he believes if they do that they should be victorious.

“The biggest thing that I want to try and avoid is making it bigger than it is,” Beck said. “We just have to do what we do and fall back on our training. Just do the little things right, like hang onto the football, finish our blocks, finish our runs, see our throws and make good decisions. As long as we do those things, I think we will be OK.”

As for what has stuck with Beck since the loss, he mentioned that there were some crucial errors that could have been avoided, especially in the second half, which could have helped seal the victory against the Bruins last year.

“We just didn’t finish the game last year. We made some crucial errors that put our defense in some tough situations in the second half.”

Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez has impressed Beck so far in this young season. Beck noted that he has really liked how Martinez has taken care of the ball.

“I think he has been pretty consistent, I like his decision making.” Beck said, “I don’t think he has really forced any bad throws, he has been able to tuck the ball and scramble and make some big plays at times, and I like that.”

Beck also noted that as a whole, the Nebraska football family’s thoughts and prayers were with the family of Nick Pasquale and the UCLA football program, following the tragic death of the Bruins’ redshirt freshman receiver.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and the whole football program at UCLA. It is hard to put yourself in their shoes with what they are going through.” Beck said, “Obviously little sentimental for them, you hate to see that happen.”

Nebraska will continue preparations Tuesday as the team moves closer to its third game of the year. NU will face the UCLA Bruins on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT. The game will be broadcasted nationally on ABC.

Woman Connected to Omaha Slayings to Remain Jailed

Christine Bordeaux

(AP) — A federal judge has ruled there’s enough probable cause to move forward with the case of an Omaha woman accused of supplying ammunition to a man suspected of going on a three-week killing spree.

U.S. Magistrate Thomas Thalken on Monday ordered 39-year-old Christine Bordeaux to be held until more proceedings in her case are scheduled.

Bordeaux is accused of illegally buying two boxes of Brenneke Classic Magnum 12-gauge ammunition in early August. Authorities have linked the ammunition to several killings in the Omaha area. Nikko Jenkins is currently being held without bond on four counts of first-degree murder in the slayings.

Bordeaux faces a federal charge of being a felon in possession of ammunition. Court records do not indicate an attorney.

Nebraska Governor’s Race Quickly Taking Shape

(AP) — The Nebraska governor’s race is quickly taking shape, with a flurry of new candidates launching their 2014 bids and others weighing their options.

Republican businessman Pete Ricketts officially jumped into the race on Sunday, and state Sen. Beau McCoy will embark Tuesday on a multi-city campaign tour. The candidates will join state Sens. Tom Carlson and Charlie Janssen, and State Auditor Mike Foley in the GOP primary.

Republican Matt Williams, the president of Gothenberg State Bank, says he is leaning toward a run for an open legislative seat, but is also looking at the governor’s race. Another potential GOP candidate, Rex Fisher, says he has ruled out a run 2014.

Former University of Nebraska Regent Chuck Hassebrook and Nebraska state Sen. Annette Dubas are running in the Democratic primary.

Philly Police Detain Father in Child’s Starvation Death

(AP) — Police have taken into custody the father of a severely disabled 3-year-old girl whose starvation death is being investigated as a homicide.

Homicide Capt. James Clark says Nathalyz Rivera weighed just 11 pounds when she died Monday.

Police say 30-year-old Carlos Rivera has been located in Philadelphia after fleeing earlier in the day.

Police say he found his daughter unresponsive inside their bug-infested home at about midnight, but called her mother instead of 911.

Clark says the girl’s mother was being questioned and he expects her to be charged.

Authorities say the girl was driven to a hospital and pronounced dead at about 2 a.m. A medical examiner termed her death a homicide caused primarily by starvation.

Scottsbluff Man Accused of Beating Pregnant Girlfriend

dark_handcuffs(AP) — A Scottsbluff man has been accused of beating his pregnant girlfriend.

Court documents say 21-year-old Jose Flores, Jr. attacked his girlfriend on Aug. 25. He is accused of hitting her while she was seven months pregnant, after she refused to have sexual contact with him at a motel.

Documents say Flores punched the woman four times while holding her down. He is accused of breaking her phone and refusing to let her leave the room.

Flores faces charges of third-degree domestic assault of a pregnant woman and first-degree false imprisonment. Bond has been set at $250,000.

A message left for Flores’ attorney was not immediately returned Monday.

No. 23 Nebraska Goes Young at Linebacker Positions

Nebraska-Cornhuskers-Football-Blackshirts-HelmetsLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska freshmen Josh Banderas and Nathan Gerry took ownership of starting linebacker jobs against Southern Mississippi and plan to keep them when 16th ranked UCLA visits the Number 23 Cornhuskers this week.

Banderas (Ban-DARE’-us) is playing middle linebacker, a spot that requires him to be a vocal leader who can relay calls and communicate adjustments. Defensive coordinator John Papuchis says Banderas’ toughness and outgoing personality make him an ideal candidate.

Gerry (Gary) is listed as the weakside linebacker, but he acts as a linebacker-safety hybrid in the dime defense, which the Huskers often use against the spread offenses they regularly see.

Banderas and Gerry will be tested against UCLA, which rolled up 653 yards in a 36-30 win in Los Angeles last year.

Patient’s Bill Soars as Health Law Program Falters

obamacare(AP) — It sounds like one of those insurance horror stories President Barack Obama told to sell his health overhaul to Congress: Bev Veals, dealing with advanced cancer, was in the hospital for chemo this summer when she got a call that her health plan was shutting down.

Then, the substitute insurance she was offered wanted her to pay more than $3,000 — on top of premiums.

But Veals is covered by Obama’s law — one of about 100,000 people with serious medical issues in a troubled program called the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan.

Political divisions over health care have blocked a fix, a bad omen for solving other problems that could surface with “Obamacare.”

Veals said she felt she finally had something dependable “and somebody pulled the plug.”
