‘Emergency Powers’ Gun Bill Slated for Neb. Vote

gun-show(AP) — A Nebraska lawmaker known as a strong gun-rights advocate is pushing a bill that would prohibit governors from restricting guns sales in a state emergency.

The measure by Sen. Mark Christensen of Imperial would prevent governors from limiting the sale or transportation of firearms after a natural disaster. Christensen has picked the bill as his priority for the year, increasing the odds it will get debated before the session ends.

Christensen says he worked on the measure with the National Rifle Association, which has advocated successfully for similar “emergency powers” laws in 34 other states.

States started passing the bills after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, when New Orleans police seized hundreds of guns. Police have said most of the confiscated firearms had been stolen or found in abandoned homes.

Morton had a wife and four children. Co-worker Katherine Freiderich says Morton always had a smile on his face and made a positive impact on others’ lives.

Magnitude-4.8 Earthquake Shakes Yellowstone

USGS(AP) — The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-4.8 earthquake that shook northern Yellowstone National Park is the strongest there since 1980.

But the Sunday quake was still considered relatively light, and its location didn’t raise concerns about the park’s supervolcano, which experts say has the potential to erupt with a force about 2,000 times the size of Mount St. Helens and would have worldwide effects.

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations says the earthquake occurred at 6:34 a.m. about 4 miles north-northeast of the Norris Geyser Basin. It was felt in the Montana border towns of West Yellowstone and Gardiner.

There were no immediate reports of damage. The park has few visitors and staff this time of year.

Yellowstone sees frequent earthquakes. Since Thursday, there have been at least 25 recorded.

Hastings Toddler Critically Hurt When Ran Over by SUV

hastings-police-good(AP) — A central Nebraska toddler remains in critical condition after being accidentally run over by his uncle.

Hastings Police Sgt. Jim Baldwin says 3-year-old Aldo Yoel Ramirez-Lopez was struck Saturday evening in a trailer park.

Baldwin says the boy’s uncle, 21-year-old Miguel Lopez, was parking a Ford Expedition and didn’t see the boy approaching from between several parked vehicles.

The boy’s injuries are life-threatening. He was flown to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha for treatment.

Police do not believe alcohol was a factor.

Nebraska Man Arrest in Fatal 2011 Shooting

handcuffs(AP) — Nearly three years after a fatal shooting in northeast Nebraska a suspect is facing charges.

23-year-old Daniel Hofmann has been charged with manslaughter, tampering with evidence and other charges in the April 2011 death.

Pierce County Sheriff Verlyn Luebbe said Friday that Hofmann is suspected in the death of 18-year-old Wesley Kuester, of Norfolk.

Kuester was shot with a shotgun while visiting friends in Pierce.

Prosecutors say Kuester and Hofmann were the only ones in the apartment at the time of the shooting, and it would have been physically impossible for Kuester to shoot himself.

Hofmann is scheduled to be arraigned in court on Wednesday.

Fearsome Final Foursome Headed to North Texas

2014 North Texas Final Four LogoThe Final Four will not have any upstarts like the past few years.

The power programs that did make it will still have plenty to prove in North Texas.

Florida, the top overall seed, is back in the Final Four for the first time since winning consecutive titles in 2006-07, this time without all those first-round NBA picks.

The Gators will face Connecticut, 2011 national champions who were barred from last year’s bracket because of academics.

Wisconsin has reached the Final Four for the first time under coach Bo Ryan, who is finally going as a coach after taking his late father every year since 1976.

Rounding out the foursome is Kentucky, the preseason No. 1 thought to be out of contention after struggling midseason.

Royals’ Teaford Sold to Korean Club LG Twins

Everett Teaford Kansas City RoyalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The rights to Royals left-hander Everett Teaford were sold to the LG Twins of the Korean Baseball Organization after it became clear he was not going to make the team out of spring training.

Terms of the sale Sunday were not disclosed.

The 29-year-old Teaford was 4-6 with a 3.49 ERA in 31 appearances at Triple-A Omaha last season. He made one appearance at the major league level, and is 3-5 with a 4.25 ERA in 45 major league outings with Kansas City.

The Royals have plenty of pitching in the bullpen, and Teaford appeared to be one of the odd men out. He was assigned to minor league camp on March 14.

Kansas City opens the season Monday in Detroit.
