War Veteran Hopes to Avoid Prison on 90th Birthday

odd-news(AP) — An 89-year-old Indiana man who transported more than 1,000 pounds of cocaine across the country says he has dementia and should be kept out of prison.

Leo Sharp is returning to Detroit federal court on May 7 for his sentence — his 90th birthday.

Sharp pleaded guilty last fall. The Michigan State Police caught him in 2011 with more than 200 pounds of cocaine on Interstate 94, although it wasn’t the first haul for the Michigan City, Ind., man.

Secretly recorded conversations show drug dealers liked to call him the “old man.”

In a court filing Tuesday, Sharp’s attorney says putting him in prison would be an expensive burden for the government.

Darryl Goldberg says Sharp was a World War II hero who was awarded the Bronze Star.

According to Kearney Police, Jane Jameson has been charged with felony theft by taking after an audit showed nearly $58,000 were unaccounted for.

Authorities say administration at UNK began investigating when they noticed Jameson was purchasing many items related to a wedding.  They were aware that Jameson was preparing for her son’s wedding at the time.

Police say an audit revealed that Jameson had improperly used around $34,000 from the University, and around $24,000 from the Symphony over the last three years.

Jameson reportedly admitted taking the money to pay her own bills.

She will be in court today for arraignment.

6 Vying for Open Nebraska Attorney General Seat

(AP) — Four Republicans and two Democrats are vying to become Nebraska’s next attorney general in a rare, contested primary.

The job opened suddenly in February, when Republican Jon Bruning announced he would run for governor instead of seeking re-election to the office he has held since 2003. So far, the race has focused on the candidates’ legal experience and how they would use the office if elected.

GOP hopefuls Brian Buescher, Mike Hilgers, Doug Peterson and state Sen. Pete Pirsch have all cast themselves as champions of states’ rights.

Democratic candidates Al Eurek and Janet Stewart say they would focus on public safety and consumer fraud, and both have promised not to use the position as a step to higher office.

The primary election is May 13.

Stubbs Hits 1st HR, Rockies Beat Diamondbacks 5-4

colorado-rockiesPHOENIX (AP) — Drew Stubbs hit his first home run of the season, off closer Addison Reed in the ninth inning, to lift the Colorado Rockies over the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 on Tuesday night.

Troy Tulowitzki (too-loh-WIT’-skee) had his second big game in a row in Arizona, hitting a two-run homer to put the Rockies up 4-3 in the sixth. Arizona’s A.J. Pollock tied it with a two-out home run in the eighth.

Stubbs, who entered in a double switch in the eighth, hit a 2-2 pitch from Reed into the right field seats, his first homer in 43 at-bats this year.

Boone Logan gave up Pollock’s homer but got the victory. LaTroy Hawkins allowed two hits in a scoreless ninth for his ninth save.

Nebraska Treasurer Faces Primary Challenge

Don Stenberg

(AP) — Incumbent Don Stenberg faces one Republican challenger in bid for re-election as state treasurer.

Since being elected treasurer in 2010, Stenberg says he has cut the office’s budget by 14 percent and improved a state website that details the money Nebraska government spends and receives.

Christopher Costello of Omaha is challenging Stenberg for the GOP nomination. Costello, who has worked in the Douglas County treasurer’s office and now heads a bus company, says he’s concerned about corruption in the tax-collection system.

Michael O’Hara of Omaha is the only Democratic candidate for treasurer. O’Hara, a professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha who teaches law and economics, says he wants to improve the office’s efficiency and transparency.

Libertarian Michael Knebel of Bellevue is also running.

The primary is May 13.

Woman in Colorado Jail After Demanding Arrest

jail(AP) — A woman who tried to break into a Colorado jail after demanding that she be arrested instead of her brother got her wish.

Twenty-year-old Monique Deshawn Armstrong was being held at the Mesa County jail Tuesday, a day after authorities say she called 911 to demand she be booked and her brother released. Her brother was arrested Sunday night on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Sheriff’s officials say that soon after the call, Armstrong got past the chain-link and razor wire fence that surrounds the jail yard. They say she was found there throwing landscaping rocks at a jail window

Armstrong asked to be arrested, and the deputies obliged.

A few hours later, her brother posted bond and was released.

Roy, Avs Bracing for Game 7 with Wild

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDENVER (AP) — Patrick Roy was quite calm and even cracked a few jokes as his team went through a light workout. No signs of stress at all.

Of course, the first-year Colorado Avalanche coach has been in a few pressure-packed Game 7 situations as a Hall of Fame goaltender — 13 to be exact.

His players? Not as much experience. A dozen had never been to the postseason before this year.

And yet Roy’s hardly fretting over his team’s emotional state heading into a decisive final game Wednesday night against the Minnesota Wild, with the winner moving on to face the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks.

On the contrary, Roy’s reminding his youthful team of one simple thing: Enjoy the moment.

Committee Won’t Dictate Number of Conference Games

College Football Playoff NCAAIRVING, Texas (AP) — College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock says the selection committee does not want to dictate how many conference games leagues play.

Hancock and the conference commissioners are meeting this week to work out the remaining details of the four-team playoff that will replace the Bowl Championship Series this season.

The Southeastern Conference recently announced it will stay with an eight-game league schedule instead of going to nine games. The Pac-12 and Big 12 play nine league games and the Big Ten is moving to nine. The Atlantic Coast Conference plays eight league games, plus five of its teams will now play Notre Dame each season.

Hancock says the “totality” of a team’s schedule will be evaluated by the selection committee for its difficulty. The number of conference games won’t matter.

Omaha Woman Gets Jail Time in Child’s Death

(AP) — A former Omaha child care provider has been given jail time in connection with the death of a 1-year-old boy under her care.

Elizabeth Harding was sentenced Tuesday to 120 days in jail and five years of probation.

A Douglas County District judge found Harding guilty of child neglect resulting in death.

Investigators say Harding was watching Chase Hunter in February 2013 when she put the child to sleep in an unbuckled car seat. Investigators say the seat belt harness wrapped around the boy’s neck. He died later at a hospital.
