Broncos Get Their Rings but Not Ones They Wanted

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — So, they weren’t the gaudy rings they really wanted. Chris Harris Jr. said he’d wear his anyway.

The Denver Broncos received their AFC championship rings in a team meeting on the eve of their three-day minicamp — one that started with a bang Tuesday when first-round draft pick Bradley Roby smacked into wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders during a no-pads practice that left both players shaken but unhurt.

The sparkling rings feature the team’s orange-mane mascot atop a diamond-encrusted football amid a navy blue background.

Malik Jackson said they make his Rose Bowl ring and the three high school championship rings he owns look as if they came out of a Cracker Jack box.

Still, five-time MVP Peyton Manning admitted he’d “probably not” be wearing his anywhere.

Consultants Chosen for Nebraska Capitol Projects

neb-capitolLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A selection committee has chosen architecture and engineering firms to consult on two major renovation projects at the Nebraska Capitol.

The five-member committee picked Bahr Vermeer & Haecker Architects and Alvine Engineering to help with the work.

The Nebraska firms were selected out of five companies that applied to consult on renovations of the Capitol’s heating and air condition system and the installation of four new courtyard fountains. The heating and air conditioning renovations will cost an estimated $77.5 million over 10 years. The courtyard fountains project is expected to cost $2.5 million.

Capitol Administrator Bob Ripley says the cost of the consulting services has yet to be negotiated. The firms were picked based on their qualifications, skills and experience, not cost.

Man Gets 10 Years for Meth Conviction in Lincoln

prison-fenceOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A man convicted of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison.

The office of U.S. Attorney Deborah Gilg (gilj) announced Tuesday that Daniel Ariza-Garcia pleaded guilty to the charge in February. Ariza-Garcia was also sentenced to five years of supervised release once his prison sentence ends.

Prosecutors say Ariza-Garcia had been involved in the distribution of methamphetamine in Lincoln and eastern Nebraska. They say a search of his apartment uncovered nearly $40,000 in cash and 9.6 pounds of methamphetamine.

Ariza-Garcia is expected to be deported to his native Mexico after serving his prison sentence.

Nebraska Gets Much Needed Rain but Hail Damages Crops

cropsLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The amount of moisture in Nebraska soil improved with last week’s heavy rains, but the storms also caused damage with large hail.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says much of central and eastern Nebraska received between 2 inches and 3 inches of rain last week. So 76 percent of the topsoil and 61 percent of the subsoil now has adequate or surplus moisture.

But the USDA says some farmers may have to replant crops after the storm damage.

About 70 percent of the corn crop was rated in good or excellent condition. And 69 percent of the soybean crop was also in good or excellent shape.

Pastures showed some improvement with the rain, but still only 39 percent of them were rated good or excellent.

Fremont Women Accused in $2.5 Million Theft Scheme

Jail-Bars-and-Cuffs_mediumFREMONT, Neb. (AP) — Two Fremont women are accused of helping embezzle nearly $2.5 million from Gavilon Grain over several years, so three people now face charges in the scheme.

Fremont Police arrested 66-year-old Dennis Hesman last week. He is charged with falsifying documents at the grain elevator he ran to create fake receipts for grain.

Authorities say Hesman created the false documents under the names of his daughter, 42-year-old Joleen Cameron, and his daughter-in-law, 50-year-old Kathy Springer-Hesman. They were both arrested over the past few days.

Investigators at Gavilon found 307 examples of falsified documents between 2007 and 2013.

Both Cameron and Springer-Hesman posted $3,000 bond on Monday. Court records do not list an attorney for the women.

Hesman remained in jail Tuesday. His attorney, Clarence Mock, did not immediately respond to a message Tuesday.

UNK Seeks to Thwart Government Request

UNKOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A central Nebraska university being sued by the U.S. Justice Department for banning a therapy dog from student housing is seeking a protective order to prevent what it says is a fishing expedition by government attorneys.

An attorney for UNK says government attorneys are demanding more than 51,000 electronically stored documents regarding any person with a disability that sought any type of accommodation from UNK. The school says that’s overly broad and would cost it nearly $159,000 to produce and review.

The U.S. Justice Department sued the university and the University of Nebraska Board of Regents in November 2011, saying the university unlawfully denied Brittany Hamilton the chance to keep a 4-pound miniature pinscher named Butch in her university-owned apartment a mile off campus to cope with depression and anxiety.

Great Nebraska Tractor Ride Starts, Ends in Wayne

tractorWAYNE, Neb. (AP) — More than 175 drivers are expected to gather in Wayne to begin the Great Nebraska Tractor Ride — an easygoing caravan of mechanized workhorses through part of northeastern Nebraska.

Carol Fuoss said she and her husband, Roger, will enjoy the chance to “drive and see things.”

The Fuosses belong to the Tri-State Old Iron Association, an antique tractor group based in Yankton, South Dakota, which sponsors a number of tractor rides. The ride begins Friday and ends Saturday at the Wayne County Fairgrounds in Wayne.

A similar ride began Monday in the Waterloo, Iowa, area.

Broncos Sign First-Round Pick Bradley Roby

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos have signed first-round pick Bradley Roby of Ohio State to a four-year deal worth approximately $7 million.

Roby said he was taken aback when he saw the figures on his contract and that he “worked my whole life for that, so it was a great feeling.”

He said the first thing he’d do with his roughly $3.5 million signing bonus was “buy my mom whatever she wants.”

The Broncos selected the All-Big Ten cornerback with the 31st pick in the NFL draft last month. He was the last of their six-player draft class to sign his deal.

Bradley started all 37 games he played at Ohio State, where he collected eight interceptions and broke up 44 passes.
