William Raymond ‘Bill’ Carey, 72, of North Platte, NE, passed away surrounded by family at his home on Wednesday, October 15, 2014.

Bill was born April 8, 1942, to Oscar Marshall and Esther Lucille Anderson Carey at Alliance, NE. He grew up in Hemmingford, NE and graduated from Hemmingford High School in 1959. Bill joined the U.S. Navy and after his discharge moved to Sidney, NE where he went to the Vo-Tech, earning a certificate as an auto body technician.

On April 8, 1964, Bill married Maxine Moul Hansen in Colorado. They lived in Gordon, NE before moving to Hot Springs, SD from 1967-68 and then to Minnesota. They moved to North Platte in 1973 where Bill went to work for Joe Dye Ford then hired on with the Union Pacific Railroad. Bill stopped working for the railroad in 1980 due to an illness then took a job with maintenance and security at the airport. He retired from there as Maintenance Supervisor in the late 90’s then worked in security at Mid-Plains Community College for two years.

Bill and Maxine celebrated 45 years of marriage before she passed away in 2010. He married Pat Burford on November 10, 2012, at North Platte. Bill was a past member of the Moose Lodge and Eagles. He enjoyed restoring toy cars, big cars and his motor home. He and Pat also enjoyed camping together.

Survivors include his wife, Pat, and son, Marshall (Jennifer) Carey, all of North Platte; stepchildren, Elisha A. Jones, of West Milbourne, FL, Joe (Kristi) Burford, of Brady, NE and Bill (Stacy) Burford, Melody (Louis) Keup, Cindy (Rick) Ryan and Donna (Randy) Lewis, all of North Platte; two grandchildren, Boston and Shelbie; 12 step grandchildren; 13 step great-grandchildren; a step great great-granddaughter; his sister, Patty (Alan) Yowell, of Scottsbluff, NE; brothers-in-law, Frances (Maxine) Moul, of Lincoln, NE and John (Linda) Moul, of Boone, IA; sister-in-law, Judi Leonard (David Shapp), of Los Gatos, CA; a cousin, Darrell (Carol) Anderson, of Bennett, CO; several nieces, nephews and other family.

Along with his wife, Maxine, Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Esther; two brothers, Mark and Jimmy Carey; a stepson, Terry Allen Hansen; and his sister-in-law, Miriam Moul.

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be 3:30 p.m. Monday, October 20, 2014, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore with Chaplain Gary Smith officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Crawford Cemetery in Crawford, NE. The memorial book may be signed at odeanchapel.com or on Monday from 9 a.m. until service time at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore which is in charge of arrangements. Memorials can be made to the donor’s choice.
