Huskers Fall to Buckeyes, 3-1

huskersoccerColumbus, Ohio – The Nebraska soccer team scored first against Ohio State at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon, but a strong Buckeye performance over the last 15 minutes led to a 3-1 loss for the Huskers.

In the 57th minute, senior Mayme Conroy headed it in from eight yards out off a crossing shot from Jaylyn Odermann. Conroy tallied her ninth goal of the season with the score to give NU a 1-0 lead. The score was Conroy’s second of the weekend, as she managed one goal against Penn State on Friday. She has seven goals in her last nine games.

In the second half, the Huskers took six shots, four of which were on goal. Katie Kraeutner, Jaycie Johnson and Caroline Flynn each managed one shot on goal, but Buckeye goalkeeper Megan Geldernick saved all three. Nebraska managed one shot in the first half.

The Huskers held a 1-0 lead until the 76th minute when Sammy Edwards knocked it in off a cross from Nichelle Prince. Ohio State took a 2-1 lead in the 87th minute after Nikki Walts scored off a Kayla Varner assist. In the 90th minute, Prince took advantage of an empty net and gave the Buckeyes a 3-1 lead with her breakaway goal from midfield.

Nebraska goalkeeper Kelly Schatz collected five saves in 90 minutes of work. NU falls to 7-9-2 on the season, and holds a 3-7-2 record in the Big Ten.

The Huskers finish their regular season next weekend at home against Iowa on Friday at 3:30 p.m. (CT). Samantha Areman, Mayme Conroy, Caroline Gray, Jourden Casey and Hannah Dittmar will be honored before the game as part of Senior Day.
