Joyce Robertson Pickett

Joyce Robertson Pickett, 88, of North Platte, formerly of Red Cloud, passed away Dec. 28, 2014 at Great Plains Health. Joyce was born October 27, 1926, at Red Cloud, the only child of Fred and Clara Belle (Scott) Robertson. She was a bright, happy and outgoing child, entertaining community groups with her dancing, singing and piano playing. From the age of five through her teen years, she participated in many musical stage productions in the area. A pleasing memory was being a member of a high school clarinet quartet that received a “superior” rating in national competition at Wichita, KS. After graduating from Red Cloud High School in 1944, she was employed as a secretary by the U.S. Triple A Farm Conservation Service in Red Cloud for the next three years.

On July 31, 1945, she was married to Wayne Dee Saladen at Smith Center, KS. To this union were born two beautiful children, Nancy Dee and Kirk Edward. Her family further expanded in 1959 when niece, Jeffie Saladen, came to make her home with them. Joyce was an active member of the Red Cloud community and First United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was also active in Eastern Star and the Red Cloud Extension Club, where she and her friends pursued interesting craft projects. When her last child was gone from home, Joyce was employed by Red Cloud United Methodist Church as secretary/bookkeeper, a position she held for five years till she moved to Grand Island.

Joyce was married to Darrell Pickett on May 1, 1976 at Messiah Lutheran Church in North Platte. She was employed by Hansen, Fuenning, Raetz, Erb, Roggow and Keck as a typist/bookkeeper and remained with that firm for nine years till Darrell’s three sons came to live with them. At that time, Joyce became a sales representative and group sales leader for Avon Cosmetics in order to have more time at home with the boys. She continued with Avon for eighteen years, earning sales awards and honors as a member of The President’s Club each year till she retired in 1999.

Joyce’s first love was her family and her home, though she devoted much time and energy to her church and to helping others. She loved to cook and had an extensive cookbook collection. She also loved to crochet. For many years each new grandchild and great grandchild was welcomed with their own special afghan, as were many other family members. She loved to read and to travel. The family visited all of the states and parts of Mexico and Canada. She also searched deeply into her family history and genealogy. She was a member of the North Platte First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.

Preceding her in death are her parents; son, Kirk Edward; grandson, Scott and two granddaughters, Lori Remmenga and Mykayah Hodgen.

She is survived by her loving husband, Darrell; daughter, Nancy Dee (David) Remmenga of Clay Center; niece, Jeffie Lee (Jim) Phillips of Maple Grove, MN; two daughters by marriage, Belinda Sue (David) Peirce of Columbus, Lisa Anne (Mark) Hodgen of North Platte; three sons by marriage, Kevin Brett (Linda) Pickett of Colorado Springs; Trent Darrell (Tracey) Pickett of Wichita, and Trevor Gene (Kris) Pickett of Nixa, MO; 24 grandchildren; 26 great grand-children; and a nephew, Don Saladen. Many other beloved family members and friends mourn her passing.

Online condolences may be shared at www.carpentermemorial.com. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 2, 2015 at First United Methodist Church in North Platte with Dr. Douglas A. Delp officiating. Burial will be at the North Platte Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte.

Documents: Bellevue Police Found Baby Unresponsive in Dirty House

BELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) — Court documents show Bellevue police found an unresponsive 2-month-old baby in dirty living conditions at her father’s house.

A warrant shows officers were called to the house on Dec. 21. Jasmine Thompson was located and later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Officers reported seeing an empty bassinet without a mattress and mildew or mold. There were several bags of garbage in the kitchen, and the house smelled of bleach and feces.

Jasmine was declared a ward of the state shortly after her birth in October. Authorities say her mother tested positive for drugs when she gave birth.

Three other children have since been removed from the house. No one has been arrested or charged in connection with Jasmine’s death.

Columbus Man Wins Delay in Start of Trial in Death of Former NP Woman

COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — A 19-year-old Columbus man accused of stabbing to death his grandmother has been granted a five-month delay before the start of his trial on murder and weapons charges.

The trial of Chase Micklevitz was scheduled to begin next week, but a judge granted defense attorney Mark Sipple’s request for the delay. Sipple was new to the case and told the judge that he needed more time to prepare Micklevitz’s defense. The new starting date for the trial is May 4.

Police have said Micklevitz stabbed 58-year-old Deanna Micklevitz four times on July 30 with a kitchen knife. She was taken to Columbus Community Hospital and then flown to a Lincoln hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Omaha Death May Have Been Caused by Icy Cold

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha authorities are investigating the death of a man whose body was found outside in the frigid weather.

Police spokesman Michael Pecha (PEH’-kuh) says officers were sent to the southwest Omaha location around 7 a.m. Tuesday to check on a report of a man down. Pecha says early signs suggest the man died from exposure. A car with one door open was found in the area Monday night.

The National Weather Service says the overnight low in Omaha hovered near zero, with a wind chill that hit minus 20.

ACLU Wants Nebraska Couple Barred from Gay Marriage Lawsuit

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The ACLU of Nebraska wants a judge to bar a prison inmate and his transgender fiancee from joining the ACLU’s legal challenge to the state ban on same-sex marriage.

Inmate Harold B. Wilson and Gracy Sedlak, formerly named John Jirovsky, earlier this month filed a motion to intervene in the federal lawsuit. It was filed in November. On Monday ACLU attorneys filed an objection, saying Wilson and Sedlak have not demonstrated or alleged that the seven Nebraska couples already in the suit do not adequately represent the couple’s interests. The ACLU also says any extra complainants would unduly delay and complicate the case.

The judge has yet to rule.

Wilson and Sedlak say they’ve twice been denied a marriage license by Lancaster County.

Miscalculated Sentences Leads AP List of Nebraska’s Top 10 Stories of 2014

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Newspaper and broadcast members of The Associated Press have voted the errant early release of hundreds of state prison inmates as Nebraska’s top news story for 2014.

The discovery by the Omaha World-Herald led to a roundup of former inmates, the early retirement of two prison attorneys and calls for additional reforms.

Finishing second in the voting was news about the killer tornado that tore through Pilger. The firing of Nebraska head football coach Bo Pelini finished third.

In order, the rest of the stories were about the treatment of Ebola patients in Omaha, the Nebraska elections, a ballot measure on Nebraska’s minimum wage, a ruling on the Keystone XL pipeline, severe weather in the rest of Nebraska, the resignation of Lt. Gov. Lavon Heidemann and news about prison overcrowding.

Eric James Nichols, 24 years, went home to his Lord and Savior on Monday, December 29, 2014, at North Platte, NE.

Eric was born August 31, 1990, to Douglas D. Gunsch and Rhonda L. Nichols at Bismarck, ND. Eric and his mom moved to Nebraska in 1991, living in Kearney until February 2014 when they moved to North Platte.

Eric started preschool at the age of 3 and attended Kearney Public Schools through his senior year. Eric touched everyone’s life in different ways and was special to many.

He will be missed by his mother, Rhonda Nichols; grandparents, Clyde Nichols and Loretta Masters; and uncles, Kyle (Kay) Nichols and Dewaine Nichols, all of North Platte; aunt, Janet (Alex) Crook, of Phoenix, AZ; and other family and his friends.

Eric was preceded in death by his grandparents, Barbara Ann Nichols and Robert Masters.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday, January 2, 2015, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore. Burial will follow in the Miller Cemetery near Tryon, NE. Visitation will be Friday from 9 a.m. until service time at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore which is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may also be shared at odeanchapel.com.

Great Plains Health Receives Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award

Great Plains Health recently received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With the Guidelines^® Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes Great Plains Health’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.

To receive the award, Great Plains Health achieved at least 24 consecutive months of 85 percent or higher adherence to all guideline indicators and achieved at least 75 percent or higher compliance with six of 10 quality measures during that same period of time, which are reporting initiatives to measure quality of care.

“Gold Plus is the highest level of recognition from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association and is given only after we have demonstrated high performance and adherence to quality standards for two consecutive years,” said Tina Pate, stroke coordinator at Great Plains Health. “These quality standards help guide us in the care we provide. The hope is that we can improve the lives of our patients who may have been affected by stroke.”

According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, on average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year. Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and serious, long-term disability in the United States.

“Many individuals have risk factors that if controlled helps reduce their risk for stroke. For example, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking are all controllable risk factors,” said Pate, “Treating these conditions in the hospital based on scientifically proven interventions such as medications to lower blood pressure or cholesterol, and educating the patient on medication compliance and smoking cessation helps decrease their chance of recurring stroke.”

The Stroke Center at Great Plains Health is also recognized as a Joint Commission Certified Primary Stroke Center.

“As a Stroke Center, we provide our patients with evidence-based care. This means the care provided is in line with the latest nationally recognized scientific guidelines,” said Pate. “At Great Plains Health, patients get a high level of stroke care locally without needing to travel far.”

Nebraska GOP Chief Spray Says He’ll Step Down

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Republican Party chairman says he will leave the post in March.

J.L. Spray, of Lincoln, said he’s informed other party leaders that he won’t seek re-election at the state central committee meeting on March 21. He’s been chairman since March 2013.

Spray says he’s stepping aside so he can devote more time to family and his law practice.
