NP Man Charged with Felony Shoplifting, Drug Possession

A North Platte man is facing two felony charges after he was busted stealing from a local store.
At around 7:15 p.m., on January 4, North Platte Police responded to Shopko, 510 East Philip Avenue, on the report of a male shoplifter.
Store staff informed officers that they had observed the suspect, 42-year-old Jeffrey Resh, concealing merchandise.
Resh then left the store and attempted to flee from a Shopko employee.
Resh was eventually apprehended, and a search of his person revealed about $55.00 worth of merchandise, and a collection of prescription pills, including Clonazepam and Amphetamine/Dextroamphetamine.
Resh was placed under arrest and transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center.
He’s been charged with felony shoplifting, due to prior convictions, and felony possession of a controlled substance.
Jury Selection Begins for Sister of Omaha Man Who Killed 4

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Jury selection has begun for the sister of a man convicted of killing four Omaha residents in 2013 within weeks of his leaving prison.
Erica Jenkins is accused of first-degree murder and other crimes in the Aug. 19, 2013, slaying of Curtis Bradford. A court official says jury selection began Monday. Her second murder trial is scheduled to begin Jan. 26 in the robbery and slaying of Andrea Kruger on Aug. 21, 2013.
Jenkins’ brother, Nikko Jenkins, has pleaded guilty to killing Kruger, Bradford and two more men. A judge has ruled Nikko Jenkins not competent to participate in the sentencing phase of his case. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
Serving time at the York prison for robbery, Erica Jenkins has waived her right to attend her murder trials.
Storm To Skate In Hastings, Aid Salvation Army
KEARNEY, Neb. – This week the Tri-City Storm will be helping the Salvation Army food pantry in Hastings collect donations, and have planned an outdoor skating event to take place in Libs Park from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7.
Various Storm players will partake in a hockey exhibition during the first part of the skate, before opening things up for a public skate.
The team asks that fans who attend bring food donations for the Salvation Army food pantry. The pantry is critically low, with bare shelves and freezers empty of meat.
Food needs include: Canned meats, i.e., tuna, spam, etc., hamburger meat (preferably in one pound tubes), hamburger helper, macaroni and cheese, soups, and stews. Other non-perishable items will also be accepted.
Tri-City is teaming up with NBC Nebraska’s Tim Jones and Taylor Kilgore for the event, as well as the team’s radio partner, Platte River Radio.
Jones and Kilgore will broadcast live from the park during their 5 and 6 p.m. newscasts.
In addition, the Viaero Event Center will serve as a collection site for food donations during the team’s upcoming home games on Jan. 9 & 10 against the Waterloo Black Hawks. Fans planning on attending either game are encouraged to bring a donation to support the food pantry.
Friday’s game gets underway at 7:30 p.m., while Saturday’s puck drop is scheduled for 7:05.

CDC: Flu Season Continues to Worsen, Could Peak This Month
NEW YORK (AP) — Health officials say the flu is rampant in most of the country and could peak soon.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday reported flu was widespread in 43 states and flu activity was intense in most of them. A CDC expert said those trends are expected to continue.
Flu season started early this winter, as it has the last two years. This season seems similar to two years ago, when the flu peaked by early January.
But the flu is hard to predict, and it has yet to rev up in heavily populated states like New York and California.
The CDC report issued Monday covers the week of Christmas.
Manning, Marshall Return to Broncos Practice
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Peyton Manning and Brandon Marshall have returned to practice following the Denver Broncos’ first-round bye.
Manning missed both of the team’s practices last week. Marshall, the team’s top tackler, hadn’t practiced since spraining his right foot at San Diego on Dec. 14.
Also back was safety T.J. Ward, who missed the season finale with a neck injury.
Denver listed 22 players on its injury report before the Broncos’ final game, against Oakland, when safety David Bruton Jr. and left guard Orlando Franklin sustained concussions.
Those were the only two players not participating in practice Monday, working instead with a strength and conditioning coach on the sideline.
The Broncos (12-4) host the Indianapolis Colts (12-5) Sunday in an AFC divisional playoff game.

Report: Rural Nebraskans Pay More in Property, Income Taxes
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A new report by a think tank says Nebraskans in rural areas generally paid more in property and state income taxes in recent years than their urban counterparts.
The OpenSky Policy Institute said in a report released Monday that Nebraskans in regions with lots of agricultural land paid more on both a per-capita basis and as a share of their incomes.
Renee Fry, the group’s executive director, says income taxes are lower in some rural areas, but rural residents end up paying more when property and income taxes are combined.
The report says urban Nebraskans used to pay slightly more per person than rural Nebraskans, but that changed in 2007. In 2012, the latest year with available data, rural Nebraskans paid more than $1,000 more per person than urban residents.
