Police: Man Charged with Sexual Assault is Beaten, Arrested

CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — Police say a South Carolina man charged with sexual assault of his nephew’s girlfriend was beaten by the relative, who won’t be charged in the incident.

Fifty-two-year-old William Mattson of Conway is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Local media outlets report that a judge denied him bond Saturday.

Mattson was arrested New Year’s Day. Authorities say Mattson’s nephew told them he came home and found his girlfriend and uncle in bed together. The nephew said the woman was naked, and Mattson was clothed.

The man said he beat Mattson until he was out of the house. Authorities say the nephew won’t be charged because he was defending the woman.

Mattson was jailed Monday. It wasn’t known whether he had an attorney. Authorities say he’s scheduled for a March 20 court appearance.

New Leadership to Tackle Old Neligh School Safety Issues

NELIGH, Neb. (AP) — The Neligh-Oakdale school district this year will have new leadership to help find solutions to old safety concerns at what’s called the East Ward school.

The interconnected buildings house grades three through 12 and the district’s central office.

Officials say a failed $6.9 million bond measure leaves the district without enough money to resolve security and fire safety issues. The district was able to obtain a two-month delay for a fire safety plan that was supposed to be send to the state fire marshal last month.

Two school board members were defeated in the November election, and district Superintendent Kim Lingenfelter is resigning at the end of the school year.

Lingenfelter said she will move in whatever direction the school board wants to go.

Hall County Supervisor Says DUI Arrest a Misunderstanding

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — A Hall County supervisor has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and refusing a chemical test.

Grand Island police say 50-year-old Dave Ziola was taken into custody around 1:30 a.m. Sunday after he failed a breath test. Officers say his vehicle had been stuck in a snowdrift.

Ziola told Hastings television station KHAS that the situation is all a misunderstanding. He says he doesn’t think his blood alcohol was anywhere near the legal limit. Ziola also says he took all the tests the officers asked but that he may not have heard the request to take another, because his hearing has been affected by the flu.

Ziola’s been a supervisor for the past four years. He was beaten in his bid for re-election and will leave office soon.

Prescribed Burn Workshops Scheduled Throughout Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Landowners can learn proper techniques for burning away excess brush, shrubs and trees in a series of workshops scheduled throughout Nebraska.

The prescribed burn training workshops will all run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Beginning and intermediate burners will learn about fire behavior, proper equipment and planning, and safety techniques.

The events are hosted by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the group Pheasants Forever, for a $10 fee.

Events are scheduled in Lincoln, Hay Springs, Scottsbluff, North Platte, Grand Island and Norfolk in January and early February. Exact dates and location are available online at https://nebraskapf.com/. People can register by logging onto the website or by calling 308-850-8395.

Nebraska Cigar Bar Owners Prepare for Last Smoke

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Cigar bar owners in Nebraska think Monday will be the last day their customers will be able to smoke indoors.

The state liquor control commission sent a letter to cigar bar owners on Friday, instructing them to turn in their specialty license for a regular liquor license.

The Nebraska Supreme Court ruled in August that an exemption to the state’s smoking ban allowing indoor smoking in cigar bars was unconstitutional. The court found the exception amounted to unconstitutional special legislation.

Jason Hutchinson runs Jake’s Cigars & Spirits and says he’s appreciative that he no longer has to wonder when the bar’s last smoking day will come. He hopes lawmakers will work on new legislation that “will work out in the end for everybody.”

Ex-Iowa Teacher Accused of Sex with Student Takes Plea Deal

GLENWOOD, Iowa (AP) — A former Glenwood teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a student and of giving alcohol to a minor has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge as part of a plea deal.

39-year-old Russell Crouch was arrested and charged in May with sexual exploitation by a school employee and supplying alcohol to a minor.

Crouch was given deferred judgment, meaning if he successfully completes a year of probation, the charge of misdemeanor aggravated assault will be removed from his record. A district court judge has ordered him to complete counseling and therapy.

Crouch taught at Glenwood High School before he resigned. He had been a teacher in the district since 2006 and taught in Hyannis and Ansley, Nebraska.

Omaha Police Identify Double Homicide Victims

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Police have released the names of two people whose bodies were found inside an apartment in north-central Omaha.

They were identified as 25-year-old Dexter Joseph and 26-year-old Marcel Lovejoy. Both had been shot.

The bodies were discovered around 11:30 p.m. Saturday as a winter storm moved through the city.

Officer Michael Pecha (PEH’-kuh) says both died at the scene. No arrests have been reported.

Official: 2 Hurts When Tornado Hits Rural Georgia

ALMA, Ga. (AP) — An assistant fire chief in rural Georgia says a tornado swept through the area and destroyed a mobile home, injuring two people inside.

Alma assistant fire chief Scotty Boatright said it took emergency crews about a half hour to rescue a woman who became trapped in the rubble of her mobile home. Her husband also had to be rescued after the mobile home was thrown off its foundation and the walls collapsed.

The woman had serious injuries and was taken to a hospital in Savannah, which is about 90 miles northeast of Alma. The man was in stable condition at a local hospital.

Boatright says the tornado knocked down trees, destroyed two barns and caused minor damage to a couple of houses.
