Momentum Building for 2015 State Games of America

state-games-of-americaLINCOLN, Neb. (April 9, 2015) The 2015 State Games of America (SGA) recently passed the 1,000 entry milestone, and SGA officials say the pace of registrations is accelerating. Athletes from 39 states and the District of Columbia have signed up for SGA 2015, scheduled for July 28–August 2 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Iowa grandmother Kay Glynn will be jumping and vaulting in her third State Games of America competition. Glynn, 62, of Hastings, Iowa, was at SGA 2001 in St. Louis, Missouri, and SGA 2005 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She’s won a lot of medals since renewing her track and field career at age 48 in the Iowa Games, but that’s not what she remembers most about the State Games of America events.

“I enjoyed the people and the camaraderie. No one is a stranger,” said Glynn. “I like to watch the kids because they remind me how much fun it is to play. And I hope I can inspire them to continue competing as they get older.”

Glynn is entered in the pole vault, high jump, long jump and triple jump. She’s looking forward to SGA 2015 because it’s a national event that’s close to home.

Track and field has the most entries so far with nearly 150 athletes. Archery, swimming, bowling and pickleball are also in the top five. SGA 2015 offers more than 60 events, including a number of developing sports which do not require pre-qualification. It’s expected to be the largest State Games of America event ever with about 20,000 participants. The Nebraska Sports Council (NSC) is organizing SGA 2015, and NSC Executive Director Dave Mlnarik expects entries to pick up as the May 15 deadline for non-Nebraska entries approaches.

“For the athletes, SGA 2015 offers great competition and a chance to make new friends from across the nation. But beyond the athletic events, we’re planning a great weekend of entertainment, starting with an inspiring opening ceremonies at Memorial Stadium, home of the Nebraska Cornhuskers,” said Mlnarik. “This will be a memorable experience for competitors of all ages and abilities.”
