Jury Convicts 2nd Suspect in Western Iowa Slayings

jury-boxSIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A jury has found a 20-year-old Denison man guilty of killing two elderly people and trying to burn their bodies.

Jurors delivered the guilty verdict Tuesday to Jayden Chapman, convicting him of two counts of first-degree murder and reckless use of fire in the deaths of 80-year-old Marvin Huesling and 81-year-old Alice Huisenga.

Chapman testified Monday in his own defense, saying he shot Huisenga because another man, 27-year-old Michael Schenk, gave him the gun. Chapman said Schenk threatened to kill him if he didn’t shoot.

Authorities say Schenk and Chapman shot the pair in March 2014 at a trailer home in Deloit and then set it on fire. Schenk was sentenced in March to two life terms for his role in the slayings.

Bill to Allow Lyft, Uber in Nebraska Moves Closer to Passage

Lyft ridesharingLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — New rules that would let Lyft, Uber and other ride-hailing companies operate legally in Nebraska have advanced to a final vote in the Legislature.

Lawmakers gave the measure second-round approval on Tuesday. The bill by Sen. Heath Mello of Omaha follows months of negotiations.

The bill imposes requirements on drivers, the ride-hailing companies and insurers.

The companies have been operating unregulated in Nebraska for about a year despite warnings from the Department of Insurance and Department of Motor Vehicles.

Proponents say the companies provide a new transportation alterative in a state with limited and expensive options.

After final approval in the Legislature, the bill will go to Gov. Pete Ricketts.

New bowls push FBS postseason to 42 games, needing 82 teams

NCAA-Football-CollegeThe NCAA certified three new bowls to push the total number of postseason games in major college football to new high of 42.

Debuting this season will be the Cure Bowl in Orlando, Florida, and as yet unnamed games in Tucson, Arizona, and Austin, Texas.

A game in Little Rock, Arkansas, was also up for certification, but Wright Waters, executive director of the Football Bowl Association, said organizers recently asked to be considered for the 2016-17 season.

ESPN first reported the new bowls had been certified.

The Austin and Orlando games will match teams from the American Athletic Conference and Sun Belt Conference. The Tucson game will feature the Mountain West and Conference USA.

The new bowls mean 82 of 128 FBS teams will play in the postseason next season.

Tax Credit for Nebraska Wind Energy Stalled by Filibuster

windmillLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A bill designed to attract more wind farms to Nebraska has stalled in the Legislature.

Conservative senators mounted a filibuster Tuesday to block the proposed tax credit, arguing that the state shouldn’t subsidize wind energy. Senators voted 30-12 to bring the bill to a vote, but supporters needed 33 to overcome the filibuster.

The bill by Sen. Jeremy Nordquist of Omaha would have provided up to $75 million in tax credits over a decade for wind farms. The program would have ended on Dec. 31, 2021, unless renewed by lawmakers, and required companies to invest some of their money in Nebraska goods and services.

Sen. Mike Groene of North Platte led the filibuster, saying the turbines are an eyesore and government shouldn’t subsidize them.

US Gives Farmers Approval to Spray from Drones

faaFRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A drone large enough to carry tanks of fertilizers and pesticides has won rare approval from federal authorities to spray crops in the United States.

Steve Markofski of Yamaha Corp. U.S.A. said Tuesday that the Federal Aviation Administration’s approval is a first. He says drones are already used to take pictures to help farmers identify unhealthy patches of crops, but this is the first time they’ll be able to carry a payload.

Markofski says Yamaha’s 207-pound (94-kilogram) RMAX looks like a small helicopter and is remotely piloted. It received FAA approval Friday.

Markofski says farmers in Japan and other countries have used the large drone for years.

University of California, Davis, professor Ken Giles says it’s best suited for precision spraying on California’s rolling vineyards and hard-to-reach places.

Lincoln Woman Sues ‘Inconsiderate Battery Guy’ After Injury

lawsuit-settlementLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln woman is suing a man she’s dubbed “Inconsiderate Battery Guy” after she tripped over a vehicle battery in a check-out lane and broke an elbow.

Pamela Bauer Flanagan doesn’t know the man’s name but filed a lawsuit last week in an effort to discover his identity. She and her attorney say they hope to compel information from the Tractor Supply Co. store that will help find him.

Bauer Flanagan says she tripped over the battery in January after the man placed it behind her and didn’t let her know. The man went to another check-out lane, paid for the battery and left.

Bauer Flanagan says she just wants the man to help pay her medical bills, which total more than $28,500.
