Storm stay close, drop to Sioux City, 5-3

stormSioux City, Ia. – The Tri-City Storm stayed within striking distance of the Sioux City Musketeers, but fell, 5-3, Saturday from the Tyson Events Center.

The game had a back-and-forth feel; the Storm never trailed by more than two and brought the game within a goal three different times.

Mattias Goransson, Jake Wahlin and Carson Meyer each had multi-point nights.

The Storm allowed the first two goals of the game, yielding to Jackson Keane and Matt Steeves, before Nico Sturm brought the offense alive with 19 seconds left in the first.

Sturm wristed a shot over the goalie Cam Gornet, the forward’s third of the season. The 6-foot-3 forward has three points (1g, 2a) in his last three games. Meyer and Wahlin garnered assists. Gornet allowed three goals on 24 shots to earn the victory.

With the Storm down two in the middle of the second, John Marino stretched a neutral zone pass that connected with Jake Wahlin. The St. Cloud State commit, Wahlin, backhanded it to Meyer, who scored his team-leading sixth of the season at the 16:36 mark of the third.

Marino and Goransson each have seven points, tied for second-most among defensemen in the USHL. Meyer leads the team with six goals and eight points.

Just 59 seconds later, the Musketeers’ Connor Sundquist scored past Matt Greenfield to give the Musketeers a 4-2 edge.

Jake Kielly replaced Greenfield for the start of the third. Greenfield took the loss, making 25 saves. In relief, Kielly made 11 of 12 saves.

Once again down by two, the Storm started a rally. At the 6:54 mark of the third, Austen Long settled a trickling puck and wristed the rubber over the left shoulder of Gornet. Goransson earned his second assist, sending the bouncer to Long.

Jacob Wilson scored on the power play with 4:55 left in the third to give the Musketeers a 5-3 edge, snapping a 24-for-24 stretch for the Storm penalty kill.
