Lincoln – The Husker football team continued preparations for Saturday’s game at Purdue with a two-hour practice in the Hawks Championship Center and the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Fields Tuesday afternoon.

With a strong possibility of rain on Saturday in West Lafayette, the Huskers spent portions of today’s workout with wet footballs to get accustomed to a slicker and heavier ball.

“We are trying to get a little bit of a taste of that wet ball,” Offensive Coordinator Danny Langsdorf said. “We were dunking those balls in cold water just to get used to the feel and handling the ball, throwing it and taking a snap so we make sure we got some work. We have not had any rain so we wanted to make sure we were ready for that.”

With Tommy Armstrong out of practice Tuesday with a foot injury, junior Ryker Fyfe got the majority of the work with the top unit. Typically, the backup gets about 30 percent of the snaps with the top units, but Langdorf was impressed with Fyfe’s work.

“I thought Ryker came in and did some nice things today,” Langsdorf said. “He looked good in practice today and we got him a lot of work. At this time of year and a guy who hasn’t gotten many reps, it is good to get him some one reps and get him back up to speed.”

Fyfe has seen limited duty, completing 5-of-7 passes for 33 yards and a TD against South Alabama.

“He has worked hard at learning (the offense). He’s pretty football intelligent and comes from a football family and I think that has helped him,” Langsdorf said. “He really understands conceptually what we are doing. He has a good handle on coverage and stayed with it and paid attention. We didn’t change anything and ran our plan and looked pretty good.”

Lansdorf also talked about some of the challenges that Purdue’s defense can provide.

“I like their defensive front. I think they have a solid group with a very good defensive end,” Lansdorf said. “They’ve got a lot of different looks up front and they challenge you bouncing between a four-down front and their 3-4 looks which can give you some issues identify it in protection and in the runs. Their secondary is a veteran group and have a good looking corner in No. 9, and their linebackers are solid.”

The Huskers will continue practice Wednesday. Check Huskers.com for updates heading into Saturday’s 11 a.m. (CT) matchup with the Boilermakers.
