NPCC Defeats Trinidad State in Overtime

michael mitchellThe North Platte Community College Knights basketball team played their second overtime game in two days.  This time the Knights came out on the winning end by defeating the Trinidad State Junior College Trojans 89-82 on “Boy Scout” night.

The Knights started the game with two field goals by Victor Lewis to give the Knights a 4-0 lead.  The Trojans fought their way back to take the lead 9-7 with 15 minutes left in the first half.  In the next two minutes the Knights went on a 10-2 run to lead by six, 17-11.

The Knights led by as much as 15 points in the first half, 37-22 and held a 38-27 halftime lead.

The Trojans started the second half on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to two 38-36, and went on to tie the game up at 46 with 12 minutes to go in the game.

The Trojans continued their hot streak by going on a 14-4 run to take their biggest lead 60-50 with just under nine minutes to play.

The Knights started their comeback and tied the game at 70 on a three-pointer by Michael Mitchell to send the game into overtime.

During the overtime period the Knights with the score tied at 75 made 12 of 13 free throws to seal the win.

The Knights improve to 9-8 on the season and 3-4 in Region IX South Sub-Region play.  Tyree Peter led the Knights with 20 points including the last four free throws of the game.  Peter also pulled down 14 rebounds for a double-double.  Three other Knights finished in double figures, Leito Holloway had 19 points, Jordan Mills had 12 points and Mitchell ended with 10 points.

The Trojans fall to 9-11 on the season and 2-4 in South Sub-Region play.  Chris Williams and Treyvon Andres each scored 19 points for the Trojans.  The only other Trojan to reach double digits was Elijah Kess with 16.  Andres pulled down nine rebounds for the Trojans.

The Knights are back in action when they face McCook Community College at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium on Wednesday, January 20.  The game is Law Enforcement Night.  All law enforcement and their families will be admitted free of charge.
